Eschatology and the Technological Future (Routledge Studies in Religion), by Michael S. Burdett

The rapid advancement of technology has led to an explosion of speculative theories about what the future of humankind may look like. These "technological futurisms" have arisen from significant advances in the fields of nanotechnology, biotechnology and information technology and are drawing growing scrutiny from the philosophical and theological communities. This text seeks to contextualize the growing literature on the cultural, philosophical and religious implications of technological growth by considering technological futurisms such as transhumanism in the context of the long historical tradition of technological dreaming. Michael Burdett traces the latent religious sources of our contemporary technological imagination by looking at visionary approaches to technology and the future in seminal technological utopias and science fiction and draws on past theological responses to the technological future with Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Jacques Ellul. Burdett’s argument arrives at a contemporary Christian response to transhumanism based around the themes of possibility and promise by turning to the works of Richard Kearney, Eberhard Jüngel and Jürgen Moltmann. Throughout, the author highlights points of correspondence and divergence between technological futurisms and the Judeo-Christian understanding of the future.

Review
"The author offers a remarkable interaction between technological and theological views of the future. Providing a readable and expert guide through the maze of utopianism, futurism, transhumanism and science fiction, he also draws skilfully on major theologians and philosophers to craft something much more original and exciting than a survey. In this book which should be required reading for all futurologists, he contrasts Christian hope convincingly with the limited possibilities promised by technology, while remaining appreciative of the contribution made by technology to the human community." - Paul Fiddes, Professor of Systematic Theology, University of Oxford, UK

"An important, illuminating and timely engagement with one of the great intellectual and cultural issues of our time." - Alister E. McGrath, Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion, University of Oxford, UK

"Amongst the growing literature addressing the debate around transhumanism, Michael Burdett's work makes a unique contribution, and in several ways. Firstly, he contextualizes contemporary discussions in a long history of scientific and fictional utopias. Secondly, he offers a comprehensive account of the major theological responses to technological utopianism. And, thirdly, he brings into play an account of theological hope that moves the whole discussion onto a new level. Clearly written and cogently argued, this new book merits the attention of students from a wide spectrum of theological and philosophical disciplines."- George Pattison, 1640 Chair of Divinity, University of Glasgow, UK

"Is there any significant difference between a machine and a human being?"

A conversation between Christian theology and transhumanism that sheds light on the broader ways that imagining a technological future relies on a rich history of religious dreams about the days ahead, and even the end of days. There's plenty to go on here, in terms of the historical scope of the argument, the huge number of ideas, sources, and lines of thought that are pulled together, and in the substantive engagement with pressing questions and contemporary movements that are actively shaping the lives we live. With a variety of Christian groups on one side, futurists of various stripes on the other, and a growing number of technologies all around (and even inside) us, we are in just the position to find Burdett's study not just interesting or insightful (though it's both), but really truly useful in navigating our world.

As a literature type, I spent the most time in the chapter on science fiction, sifting the ideas about the importance of myths for grounding action. The argument here is really helpful in positioning science fiction as the genre in which we celebrate science and technology, but also as an expression of our suspicions as well as our hopes. Various subgenres and modes within science fiction allow for a variety of engagements with technology. Burdett focuses on issues of affect: the strange wonder of the differences between a science fictional world and ours that create a sense of awe in the audience, an awe that often centers around an encounter with technologies that delight and dazzle us with their power, the "technological sublime."

The turn in the final third of the book toward the divide in values (and corresponding ethical imperatives) between a robust Christian eschatology and a transhumanist vision for the future is the strongest aspect of the overall argument. While there's no alarmist finger wagging here, this is not a book of navel-gazing platitudes but a call to action. The argument closes with an appeal to envision the future in a way that values the present rather than simply rushing past it toward the specter of a future state.

Full-bodied footnotes add a lot of interesting commentary on the various sources quoted, and give a richness to the readings of the various texts. The body of the argument is streamlined, but there is plenty here for anyone who wants to chase down one point or another at greater length.
