Clears out the mumbo jumbo and muddled thinking underlying too many strategies and provides a clear way to create and implement a powerful action-oriented strategy for the real world

Developing and implementing a strategy is the central task of a leader, whether the CEO at a Fortune 100 company, an entrepreneur, a church pastor, the head of a school, or a government official. Richard Rumelt shows that there has been a growing and unfortunate tendency to equate Mom-and-apple-pie values, fluffy packages of buzzwords, motivational slogans, and financial goals with “strategy.” He debunks these elements of “bad strategy” and awakens an understanding of the power of a “good strategy.”

A good strategy is a specific and coherent response to—and approach for overcoming—the obstacles to progress. A good strategy works by harnessing and applying power where it will have the greatest effect in challenges as varied as putting a man on the moon, fighting a war, launching a new product, responding to changing market dynamics, starting a charter school, or setting up a government program. Rumelt’s
nine sources of power—ranging from using leverage to effectively focusing on growth—are eye-opening yet pragmatic tools that can be put to work on Monday morning.

Surprisingly, a good strategy is often unexpected because most organizations don’t have one. Instead, they have “visions,” mistake financial goals for strategy,
and pursue a “dog’s dinner” of conflicting policies and actions.

Rumelt argues that the heart of a good strategy is insight—into the true nature of the situation, into the hidden power in a situation, and into an appropriate response. He shows you how insight can be cultivated with a wide variety of tools for guiding your
own thinking.

Good Strategy/Bad Strategy uses fascinating examples from business, nonprofit, and military affairs to bring its original and pragmatic ideas to life. The detailed examples range from Apple to General Motors, from the two Iraq wars to Afghanistan, from a small local market to Wal-Mart, from Nvidia to Silicon Graphics, from the Getty Trust to the Los Angeles Unified School District, from Cisco Systems to Paccar, and from Global Crossing to the 2007–08 financial crisis.

Reflecting an astonishing grasp and integration of economics, finance, technology, history, and the brilliance and foibles of the human character, Good Strategy/Bad Strategy stems from Rumelt’s decades of digging beyond the superficial to address hard questions with honesty and integrity.

Amazon Exclusive: Walter Kiechel Reviews Good Strategy Bad Strategy

Walter Kiechel is the author of The Lords of Strategy. Until January 2003, Kiechel served as editorial director of HBP and senior vice president in charge of its publishing division, with responsibility for the Harvard Business Review; HBS Press, the company's book-publishing arm; the newsletter unit (which he helped start in 1996) as well as HBP’s video, reprints, and conference businesses

Considering the source, this is a shocking book. For over 40 years Richard Rumelt has made distinguished contributions to the field of strategy, in his theorizing, teaching, and consulting. Now comes the deponent to tell us that what purports to be strategy at most organizations, not just companies but not-for-profits and governments as well, hardly merits the name. Instead it represents what he calls "bad strategy"--a list of blue-sky goals, perhaps, or a fluff-and-buzzword infected "vision" everybody is supposed to share.

Refreshing stuff this, seeing the corporate emperor revealed not in his imagined suit of armor but rather in something resembling a diaphanous clown suit. Rumelt drives the point home with a simple explanation for why most organizations can't do "good strategy": the real McCoy requires making choices, feeding a few promising beasties while goring the oxen of others at the management table.

But the jeremiad, fun as it is--and it is fun, Rumelt has a good time punching holes in the afflatus of bad strategy--isn't my favorite part of the book. That would be the second section, with the slightly daunting title "Sources of Power." To be useful to a practitioner, a book on strategy needs not only a straightforward framework but also a certain craftiness, a set of ideas that prompt the reader to think "What a neat idea" or "How clever of them." Rumelt has the clear, elegant framework in what he calls the "kernel"--a diagnosis explaining the nature of the challenge, a guiding policy for dealing with it, coherent actions for carrying out the policy.

In "Sources of Power," though, he goes deeper than the merely crafty to identify potential levers of for strategic advantage--proximate objectives, design, and focus, among others--that transcend the purely economic. Repeatedly he demonstrates how to think down through the apparent challenge, with questions and then questions of those questions, to get at what can be the bedrock of a good strategy.

In a final section on thinking like a strategist, we get a sense of what a delight it must be to sit in Rumelt's classroom, or with him on a consulting assignment, as he leads us through the best kind of Socratic dialogue to appreciate the kinds of blinders or mass psychology that can pose the final barriers to our forging clear-eyed strategy.

If you want to make strategy, or be an informed part of the ever-evolving conversation around the subject, you will need to read this book. My bet is that you'll enjoy the experience. --Walter Kiechel

A Mixed Bag Review
By Heather Sparrow
Rumelt's `Good Strategy Bad Strategy' provides a refreshing, straight-forward take on business strategy basics. Written in an informal tone, the reader can immediately connect with the author. The book demonstrates strategies from large corporations and his personal anecdotes. Rumelt cuts through the common strategy jargon and differentiates real strategy from misguided goal setting. The book follows this pattern, through Chapter 6, at least. Then somewhat unexpectedly, the book turns from `straight-shooting' business strategy to theoretical concepts and meandering stories, leaving the reader wondering, `where exactly this book is headed'.

On the positive side, the book is worth its purchase price for the clarity Rumelt offers on how to create good strategy. He uses the `kernel' method emphasizing the need to identify the structure of a current business challenge, choosing a `guiding policy' for dealing with the challenge, and lastly designing a series of actions or resource allocations in order to implement the `guiding policy'. With his solid advice and focus on action items as the underlying mechanism for effective business strategy, it begs the question in today's market, `how can so many of today's corporations issue strategies that are `fluff' and no action. Rumelt hits the nail on the head with the majority of the examples he uses, one of which, after peeling away the layers of a corporate bank's `strategy' the core message is a bank exists to be a bank. Rumelt uses the bank example to show what strategy is not. Strategy is not a goal setting, is not a budget and is not a laundry list of lofty desirable outcomes. Good strategy is specific and action-oriented.
In the same vein, another positive point for the `Good Strategy Bad Strategy' content is that Rumelt identifies the core element to initiating a good strategy: "discovering the critical factors in a situation" and creating a set of actions to deal with the situation. The emphasis on taking action is a key component of the book. It is often missing in the cultural jargon and `fluff' that other strategic books espouse. In this book, strategy is not disguised as a company's mission and/or values. Additionally, Rumelt highlights that a coherent strategy does not consist of companies with too many objectives; as this ultimately results in a loss of focus.
On the other side of the coin, after Chapter 6 the reader will need to have patience to work through the concepts and examples Rumelt presents. It would be most beneficial if the reader is already well-versed in management strategy and/or has years of on the job experience in order to best apply and thoroughly understand his examples on proximate objectives, chain-link systems and inertia and entropy. The examples come more from his personal consulting experiences and the demonstrative stories are not as direct and to the point as the examples in his first few chapters. The overarching concepts are relevant to strategy, but again unless the reader is well-versed in management strategy the application or replication of these concepts may prove difficult.

Overall, `Good Strategy Bad Strategy' is a recommended read for those interested in business strategy. The no-nonsense approach is refreshing and there are definite `pearls' of strategic wisdom in the book. There are a myriad of examples from history and business cases in which Rumelt's strategic advice draws upon. However, the reader should keep in mind that the later sections of the book are lackluster compared to the first few chapters. With that said, the book should still be given a chance and is worth its investment. All in all, the book is a `mixed bag', but take a chance and see for yourself.

A Must-Read for All Strategists and Students of Strategy
By Warren Miller
I bought this book soon after it came in mid-2011. I'm just finishing my fourth reading of it. It's a show-stopper. Other reviewers who panned this book either because they think theory has no connection to practice or because they think Richard Rumelt didn't have enough material for a book missed the boat completely. For one thing, as scholar Kurt Lewin said over six decades ago, 'There's nothing quite so practical as good theory.' Good theory doesn't give us the answers. It gives us the questions. And, in my line of work--which is appraising middle market companies and helping them prepare their companies for rapid growth, for much greater profitability, and/or for an ownership transition (sale to either an external or an internal buyer)--more than any other, except for medicine, not asking the right questions can be fatal to a client company's economic health. So we start with good theory.

Good strategy arises from good theory. Rumelt has contributed a plethora of ground-breaking papers to the strategy literature over the past forty years. It began with his Harvard dissertation, 'Strategy, Structure, and Economic Performance', which was later published by the Harvard B-School Press. Even after nearly four decades, it remains the definitive empirical work on diversification, good and bad. An important finding of that book is counterintuitive: that vertical integration (think major oil companies or investor-owned electric utilities) is an uneconomic way to grow. The ignoramuses in economics that masquerade as talking heads on network news programs would have us believe that vertical integration is a true bogeyman. Hogwash. The data don't support that view, not for a minute, and Rumelt blew the whistle on that myth.

His new book is another seminal contribution. He weaves theory and his own considerable consulting experience (both with business and with government) into a coherent and highly readable essay about the formulation of strategy. One of the best--and, I suspect, most underrated--contributions of the book is its enumeration of what makes for 'bad strategy'. Beginning the chapter with that name (p. 32), Rumelt cites four primary contributors, any one of which will do the job:

1. "Fluff. Fluff is a form of gibberish masquerading as strategic concepts or arguments. It uses 'Sunday' words (words that are inflated and unnecessarily abstruse) and apparently esoteric concepts to create the illusion of high-level thinking.

2. "Failure to face the challenge. Bad strategy fails to recognize or define the challenge. When you cannot define the challenge, you cannot evaluate a strategy or improve it." [WDM note: He deals with defining the challenge in Chapter 5, 'The Kernel of Good Strategy.']

3. "Mistaking goals for strategy. Many bad strategies are just statements of desire rather than plans for overcoming obstacles.

4. "Bad strategic objectives. A strategic objective is set by a leader as a means to an end. Strategic objectives are 'bad' when they fail to address critical issues or when they are impracticable."

As other reviewers have noted, the 'new' new thing in this book is the 'strategy kernel'. He defines its three constituent parts as follows:

1. a 'Diagnosis' the defines the nature of the problem;

2. a 'Guiding Policy' for determining whether an idea for dealing with the problem holds water; and

3. 'Coherent Actions' that implement the guiding policy.

My pithy description of the kernel might make it sound trivial. Trust me: it's not. It's deep, mind-bending stuff. We have used it in our practice to reshape my own contribution to the literature, 'Value Maps: Valuation Tools That Unlock Business Wealth' (Wiley, 2010). Rumelt's 'kernel' is now the underlying foundation of each value map we prepare for a client.

But there's more, much more, to Rumelt's book than the kernel. Along the way, he offers up the four components of 'bad strategy': fluff; failing to face the problem; mistaking goals for strategy (take that, Strategic Planners!); and lousy strategic objectives. These may sound like common sense, but they're not. And Rumelt's explication of them is riveting.

He devotes a lengthy chapter to one of the most interesting new aspects in strategy: design thinking. He calls today's master strategist a 'master designer'. He notes that contemporary strategy is not about decision-making. It's about design. He contrasts how Xerox blew its dominance of plain-paper copiers with Paccar's high performance in a low-growth domain. Xerox had plain-paper copiers to itself and then rested on its laurels; I'll bet Coach Jim Harbaugh of the San Francisco 49ers can relate to that. So can Nokia. So can Blackberry (nee Research In Motion). Any coach of a top-rated college football team will attest that it's a lot easier to become #1 than it is to remain #1. The same thing is true in business, only its 'players' aren't on a four-year cycle. (Somehow Rumelt did not mention the serial inability of Xerox to commercialize trailblazing innovations created at its PARC [Palo Alto Research Center] facility: the mouse, the graphical-user interface (the forerunner of Windows), the WYSIWIG text editor, Ethernet networks, and the laser printer. Paccar was lower-profile and just kept on keepin' on, as they say down South. My description doesn't do this chapter justice, so be sure to give it the time and attention it deserves.

The highlight of the last chapter in the book is the 'five intertwined errors in human judgment' that gave us the following disasters: the 2008 financial collapse, the Hindenburg, the Johnstown flood, Katrina, and the BP Gulf oil spill. That commingled quintet comprises:

1. 'engineering overreach' - systems whose defects designers didn't understand until it was too late;

2. the 'smooth-sailing fallacy' - 'the assumption that a lack of recent tremors and storms means there is no risk';

3. 'risk-seeking incentives' - Rumelt notes that the bail-outs of New York City (1975), Continental Illinois Bank (1984), and Long-Term Capital Management (1998) served to encourage people to take huge risks because, if the risks paid off, they got fabulously wealthy, and if they didn't, society stomached the loss. 'Privatize the gain, socialize the loss'. Others would call such policy 'moral hazard';

4. 'social herding' - wherein everyone is doing more or less the same thing, so it seems normal, mutually self-reinforcing, and risk-free. . .until the bottom falls out; and

5. what Rumelt labels 'the inside view' - he cites the fact that talking on one's cell phone while driving multiplies the likelihood of an accident by 5 times, yet drivers do it anyway, secure in the misbegotten belief that those sobering statistics 'don't apply to me because I'm a good driver'.

This is a well-written and powerful book. Each time I've read it, I've learned and spotted insights that I hadn't picked up on before. I think that makes it accurate to say that Richard Rumelt is a man of great wisdom. It just takes some of us a while to pick up on such wisdom because we encounter it so seldom.

A wealth of practical wisdom
By DonSlive
I am not a strategy specialist. I run a small business and am currently co-chair of a study task force appointed to deal with issues facing our local (UMC) church. Over the years I have looked at a number of books about business planning and strategy and have found interesting things but have always felt that they were written for someone who had to "sound smart" in some meeting or presentation.

I was visiting my brother's house and started reading his copy of Good Strategy/Bad Strategy one evening. I stayed up until 3 a.m. to finish it. There is a wealth of practical wisdom here that is presented without jargon and with a nice garnish of wit.

At first I assumed the "bad strategy" concept would apply to big companies and that I could breeze through it. But, as I got ahold of the argument, I began to see bad strategy all around me. It's there in state government, in the school system, in town planning, at a park where I am a trustee, and, of course, in Washington D.C. This idea has been a real eye-opener to me and I hope that it reaches a wide audience. The benefit is not just to strategy experts, but to ordinary people who need a way of understanding what is right and wrong with the institutions around them.

Even more than the "bad strategy" idea, I found the author's approach invigorating and empowering. Dr. Rumelt doesn't tell you what to do to make a good strategy. Instead, he says that it is the product of insight. In addition, he tells us that a strategy can't be "proven" to be correct. It is simply a good guess ("hypothesis") about what will work. (I sort-of always knew this, but couldn't articulate it in the face of so much expert blather about the best way to plan.) But, he then explains ways of thinking that help generate insight. A strategy is the solution to a problem, he says, so work very hard on defining and understanding the problem. Your insights about strategy will grow with your understanding of the challenge being faced. A strategy is not just about the future, he tells us, which means that we need to set a proximate objective, one that we can focus on getting done now. The proximate objective should be a task, not some performance goal. A good strategy, he explains, concentrates energy where it will have the most effect.

Good Strategy/Bad Strategy has had an immediate effect on our parish study group. I saw that we were building what the book terms a "dog's dinner" strategy and that we needed to focus on a critical "proximate objective." Dr. Rumelt, gives examples, but wisely doesn't tell you much about what your objective should be. Instead, he suggests that the group seek to discover the one thing, the one task, that is doable and which, when accomplished, would make the most difference. No fancy charts or diagrams, just a big WOW!

A Ride In The Sun - Gasoline Gypsy, by Peggy Iris Thomas

This is a tale about an incredible trio: Oppy, the indomitable motorcycle, its 125-pound frame swaying under three times its weight; Matelot, the automotive Airedale, perched on his box, ears flying in the breeze; and the gasoline gypsy, Peggy Iris Thomas, who bumped her way over 14,000 miles of the United States, Mexico and Canada. There is a touch of the vagabond in all of us. But few have the determination and courage that started Peggy off from Liverpool in the spring of 1951 with 60 dollars in her pocket and the gleam of adventure in her eye. Her new BSA Bantam motorcycle, Oppy, was loaded to straining point with clothes, food, and complete camping equipment. Matelot, both companion and guardian, stood wagging his tail by her side. Before they turned homeward once more Peggy and Matelot were to pitch their tent in such places as a vacant lot in downtown Los Angeles, a Mexican village bar room, a mosquito-infected Louisiana swamp, and on the heights of New Jersey's Palisades. In A Ride In The Sun - Gasoline Gypsy, Peggy tells the lighthearted story of her adventures whilst motorcycling through the forests of Nova Scotia and over the Canadian Rockies, stopping long enough along the way to recoup her finances by holding down two office jobs at once in an eighteen-hour working day in New Brunswick, and working as an apple picker and factory labourer in British Columbia. Then off down the beautiful Pacific coast, south east to Mexico and up the eastern seaboard to New York City. Undaunted by sandstorms, earthquakes, tropical gales and incredible desert heat, thrilled by the invigorating life out doors and cheered along by her many new-found friends, she has woven her unique journey into an engaging account of life on the open road. This second edition includes 14 photographs of the author, her motorcycle and Airedale dog. The original 1953 edition had no images.

A Real Gasoline Gypsy
By Judith Coyle
A Ride in the Sun/Gasoline Gypsy inspires and delights yet it also intrigues because beneath its carefree image and writing tone there is a complex story going on.

Firstly, the book should appeal to many different readerships because at its heart are four `characters': the rider, Peggy Iris Thomas; Matelot, her Airedale Terrier, who rides pillion; Oppy, the heavily-laden BSA Bantam, and the 14,000 mile journey itself. So, if you are a motorcyclist, a dog lover, a classic bike fan or adore travel books then this one should please. If you fall into all four of those categories you should be over the moon!

The book was born out of a series of articles Peggy wrote about her solo expedition through Canada, America and Mexico between 1951 and 1952. (I say `solo' but she did have the faithful Matelot for company; the star of the show as far as I was concerned.)

The text can be viewed in a number of ways too: as a travelog, as a story, and as a historical document. In fact, it is what is NOT said in the book that stirs curiosity. Reading between the lines I would say that the magazine publishers commissioned her to write a light-hearted tale of derring-do. The book's original blurb says: "cheered along by her many new-found friends, she has woven her unique journey into an engaging account of life on the open road."

She certainly met the brief. It is a jaw-dropping, rip-roaring tale as Peggy dashes along the highways encountering sandstorms, earthquakes, tropical gales, desert heat and all manner of creepy crawlies and crustaceans that crawl over her body and she loses Matelot at one point. Yet the book's original artwork included a drawing of a neat, blonde lady (with a neat brown dog) who looks like she is riding through an English shire.

I believe that Peggy Thomas was much more interesting, less anodyne than that. I would even go so far as to say she was a potentially subversive character. This is a woman who is travelling alone in the most exposed circumstances imaginable. She blithely reveals how in Hollywood she is taken into the home of Pat and Bernice, two black teachers. Though the couple is clearly middle-class and cultured, and living in the possibly more open-minded Los Angeles, this was at a time of deep segregation in America and readers back home may well have raised eyebrows. What she did flouted the mores of the time but she does not go into detail about that in the text, though she does mention a less comfortable encounter with a poor, black community in the heart of Georgia, in the deeply segregated south, who view her with silent suspicion.

Peggy also travels across a desert with a man who makes a pass at her when, storm-drenched, they finally reach their destination. She manages to sidestep this guy but we must assume that she met with sexual harassment along the way. But we hear nothing of that, apart from the leers and whistles she receives while working as a car hop - a job she sticks for one night only. This is what I mean by saying it is a wonderful historical document. The omissions reveal to us what was acceptable and unacceptable to 1950's readers.

The more I read the more curious I became about Peggy. What gave her the confidence to undertake this clearly perilous journey on her own? This was a time, remember, when post-war women were being forced back into the home and marriage was pushed as the ultimate goal. What did Carl-Erik, her future husband make of it all? (He who posted her engagement ring to her while she was on the road). Why was the marriage short-lived? Was Peggy, the girl who sleeps in lay-bys, swamps and on a Mexican bar's table tops, and who makes the best of a lack of washing and laundry facilities, too much the free spirit, I wonder? And how did Matelot end his days?

There was something of the spirit of empire in Peggy, I felt. She not only knew how to work, ride and occasionally fix a motorbike (a 125cc one at that!) she knew how to work people. She was not averse to using her femininity to escape the wrath of officials or to secure help yet she also used her voice, her bearing, to get things done, for example, among the Mexicans with their insistence on `manana'.

Reading the book 60 years after the ride took place I marvelled at how Peggy, in an increasingly affluent post-Second World War America, could easily pick up jobs and leave them as she wanted, something that we, who have mass unemployment as the norm, can only dream of. And motorcycle lovers will marvel (or reminisce) about a time when there was a thriving motorcycle shop with its own mechanics in every town, such was the practicality and affordability of motor biking.

Maybe the world was a simpler, friendlier, safer place back then because Peggy steps into trucks and cars with complete strangers, many of them lone men, and wherever she goes she seems to be invited into people's houses to stay the night, eat with them and be part of their lives for a short time. She sleeps on beaches and on roadsides, in her tent or just under a sleeping bag, though she does resist sleeping in Central Park because she has heard that murders take place there. She climbs into a truck whose driver is drunk. "So what?" says her friend, Veda. More innocent times indeed!

However, as the book nears its end I felt that Peggy revealed a more honest picture of her journey. Almost penniless she is forced to undertake jobs she finds disagreeable, in fact, downright humiliating, she lives on little more than banana sandwiches, is anaemic and even Matelot is looking a little bony. Oppy, who does an amazing job, is buckling under the strain. You sense that despite all the wonderful people she has met that there is a loneliness to those last weeks.

But there is no doubt whatsoever that Peggy was made for a life on the road. She takes difficulties in her stride, makes friends wherever she goes and though she powders her nose and brushes her hair we suspect she barely cares a hoot for how she looks. For Peggy the adventure is the thing.
She is a true vagabond, the real `Gasoline Gypsy'.

The Guys - Acting Edition, by Anne Nelson

First performed in a hit off-off-Broadway production, and soon to be a film starring Sigourney Weaver and Anthony LaPaglia, The Guys is a timeless drama about the surprising truths people can discover in ordinary lives, and the connections we make with others and ourselves in times of tragedy.

Paralyzed by grief and unable to put his thoughts into words, Nick, a fire captain, seeks out the help of a writer to compose eulogies for the colleagues and friends he lost in the catastrophic events of September 11, 2001. As Joan, an editor by trade, draws Nick out about “the guys,” powerful profiles emerge, revealing vivid personalities and the substance and meaning that lie beneath the surface of seemingly unremarkable people. As the individual talents and enthusiasms of the people within the small firehouse community are realized, we come to understand the uniqueness and value of what each person has to contribute. And Nick and Joan, two people who under normal circumstances never would have met, jump the well-defined tracks of their own lives, and so learn about themselves, about life, and about the healing power of human connection, through talking about the guys.

From Library Journal
Compelled by the tragic events of September 11, Columbia Journalism School professor Nelson volunteered to write eulogies for a fire captain who lost eight men. When director Jim Simpson of off-Broadway's Flea Theatre learned about her efforts, he recognized the potential for an original play. With his encouragement, first-time playwright Nelson feverishly wrote this two-character, one-act work, showing great sensibility and compassion. Premiered at the Flea Theatre on December 4, 2001, the play has been a running success. In these finished eulogies, the fire captain's sketchy recollections of four of his men at work and at play were transformed into full portraitures. Through skillful dialogs and monologs, minimal props and setting, Nelson transcended time and space to create a moving, cathartic work. The book includes three pictures from the Flea Theatre production, a lengthy preface and afterword by the author, and a list of suggested readings. This timely literary work is highly recommended for all academic and public libraries.

From Booklist
From her experience helping a New York fire captain prepare eulogies for the men in his command who died on 9/11, Nelson distilled this two-person play. Premiered in December 2001 at a theater near the WTC and struggling to survive in the tragedy's wake, it consists of monologues by Jane, a journalist; dialogues between her and Nick, captain of a decimated company; and overlapping closing monologues as Jane speaks her heart and Nick, who has already spoken so much of his, reads the words Jane has fashioned for him. The time limitations of viable performance allow limning only a handful of firefighters, and Nelson makes the most of those strictures, presenting a veteran, a probie (a rookie on probationary appointment), and two men in mid-career. Drawing on her knowledge of Argentina and the American heartland, Nelson also has Jane voice some far-flung perspectives on 9/11. Deeply moving when read, the play may be overwhelming onstage and in the forthcoming film version. Nelson's preface, afterword, and further reading advice worthily fill out this book. Ray Olson

A WOW of a single event AND of humanity, all at once.
By Julie Jordan Scott
This play is fascinating on many levels - and is rich

enough to continue to wow audiences long after

September 11 sinks deeper into history.

There is a lot of truth here - richly evident in the

human element of the stories Joan and Nick

weave together at a time when stories (beyond

horror and heartbreak) were able to tell.

Joan, a writer, is introduced to Nick in the days

after September 11 because Nick has the

privilege - and the awesome responsibility -

to speak at the funerals of his men who died

in the attacks on the World Trade Center.

The audience (in this case, reader) gets to know

Joan, the interviewer and more - about her

background in Oklahoma. We learn, for me

it was first hand and finally, about the magnitude

of the impact this event had on the New York

fire departments, especially in Manhatten.

The relationship between Nick and Joan is

remarkable AND truthful - sort of a universal

relationship of souls connecting post tragedy

of this size and strength.

Finally - I enjoyed reading the Preface, the

Author's Note and the Director's Note. It

felt almost sacred to hear how this very vital

piece of theatre, and literature, came into

being.

I would love to see it performed somewhere.

Ah, to be so blessed.

The Days After.
By tvtv3
THE GUYS is a two-character play based upon real life experiences. The characters of the play are Joan and Nick. Joan is a writer who is asked by Nick, a fire chief, to write eulogies for the men at his fire house who died on September 11th. Nick wants to honor his friends and comrades, but doesn't know how. He seeks Joan to write down on paper what he knows from memory and remembers from his heart.

THE GUYS is a short play, ninety minutes when performed, varying from monologues by Joan to scenes where she is discussing with Nick the men who died that day. The play is moving and seems to capture much of the spirit of our nation during that time. The rememberances of each of "the guys" are vivid and though are based on sketches of many real life fireman, their lives are representative of any number of Americans. The play truly is an honor to them because it illustrates what a hero really is, just an ordinary person who arises to the occassion during extraordinary times.

The play is extremely well-written and simple. The character of Joan appears to be mostly based upon the author herself, though there are probably some differences. Overall, a beautiful piece of dramatic art. Other than that, it's a wonderful play.

A powerful post-9/11 play
By Michael J. Mazza
There have been a lot of books written in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. But "The Guys," by Anne Nelson, is definitely one that stands out from the pack. This is a two character play. The preface states that it "is based on a true experience."
"The Guys" tells the story of Nick, a New York City fire captain who has lost many men in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He comes to see Joan, a writer, so that she can help him write eulogies for his fallen men. As the two characters talk about the dead firefighters, Nick opens up and they create testimonies to these men.
This is a very moving work of drama. Although rooted in the events of 9/11, the play touches on issues that transcend that specific historical moment; it's about the place of a writer in society and about the potential power of words as healing tools. It's also about how extraordinary events impact ordinary people.
A director's note states that the play was commissioned in response to the 9/11 events, and opened in December 2001. Recommended as a companion text: "The Laramie Project," co-authored by Moises Kaufman; this is another fact-based play about how people respond to a violent tragedy.

Queer London: Perils and Pleasures in the Sexual Metropolis, 1918-1957 (The Chicago Series on Sexuality, History, and Society), by Matt Ho

In August 1934, young Cyril L. wrote to his friend Billy about all the exciting men he had met, the swinging nightclubs he had visited, and the vibrant new life he had forged for himself in the big city. He wrote, "I have only been queer since I came to London about two years ago, before then I knew nothing about it." London, for Cyril, meant boundless opportunities to explore his newfound sexuality. But his freedom was limite: he was soon arrested, simply for being in a club frequented by queer men.

Cyril's story is Matt Houlbrook's point of entry into the queer worlds of early twentieth-century London. Drawing on previously unknown sources, from police reports and newspaper exposés to personal letters, diaries, and the first queer guidebook ever written, Houlbrook here explores the relationship between queer sexualities and modern urban culture that we take for granted today. He revisits the diverse queer lives that took hold in London's parks and streets; its restaurants, pubs, and dancehalls; and its Turkish bathhouses and hotels—as well as attempts by municipal authorities to control and crack down on those worlds. He also describes how London shaped the culture and politics of queer life—and how London was in turn shaped by the lives of queer men. Ultimately, Houlbrook unveils the complex ways in which men made sense of their desires and who they were. In so doing, he mounts a sustained challenge to conventional understandings of the city as a place of sexual liberation and a unified queer culture.

A history remarkable in its complexity yet intimate in its portraiture, Queer London is a landmark work that redefines queer urban life in England and beyond.

“A ground-breaking work. While middle-class lives and writing have tended to compel the attention of most historians of homosexuality, Matt Houlbrook has looked more widely and found a rich seam of new evidence. It has allowed him to construct a complex, compelling account of interwar sexualities and to map a new, intimate geography of London.”—Matt Cook, The Times Higher Education Supplement

What begins as the story of Cyril L., who, at 20, was married and had a daughter, but discovered he was gay shortly after moving to London's West End in 1932, quickly turns into an overwhelming sprawl of meticulous research that, despite its commendable intentions, is too dense to appeal to anyone other than very devoted scholars. Houlbrook, a lecturer in history at the University of Liverpool, examines London's roles in self-discovery and its inextricable links to gay culture, but often loses the reader within the vast tracts of information he presents in his historic tour of "London's queer geography," which has frequent stops at public urinals ("identified as the locus of sexual offences"), clubs, bathhouses, police patrols (one officer concludes in a surveillance report the two men he'd been observing were "undoubtedly of the Nancy type," while his colleague determined the men were, actually, "West End Poofs.") and courtrooms. Surely, there is no dearth of material presented, but some tidbits, such as public urinal geography and the detailed order of police units detached to apprehend "sodomites," come off as frivolous and detract from what could be an engaging read.

Review
“Through an extensive trawl of police records, Matt Houlbrook provides an insight into the dangers and excitements of the underground homosexual scene during the first half of the 20th century. Homosexual behaviour was still an imprisonable offence, yet Houlbrook shows how men defined their own spaces in the metropolis, establishing covert places where they could meet like-minded men. . . . This is a well-researched book which adds to recent scholarship in the history of sexuality. The author challenges the rigid views found in current observations of homosexuality extending our understanding by, quite rightly, placing into the broader overall pattern of changing masculinity.” (Julie Peakman BBC History)

“From the dockside pubs and river steps of the East End to the glittering Long Bar of the Trocadero; from the Savoy Turkish Baths in Jermyn Street to the stinking cast-iron urinals on Fair Street in Bermondsey, Houlbrook’s narrative meanders across a capital city as protean as the middle-class men and working-class boys who lived and lusted, loved and (more often than not) loitered and lost within it.” (Peter J. M. Wayne Spectator)

“Queer London explores the relationship between gay sexualities and modern urban culture, revisiting the restaurants, pubs, dance halls, Turkish baths and hotels of London, and shows how municipal authorities tried to crack down on these worlds.” (History Today)

“As Queer London makes remarkably clear, just a few decades ago, significant numbers of (working-class) young men were not only moving freely between male and female partners but were happy to brag about it. So long as they were ‘butch’ and active—or claimed they were—it would merely enhance their reputation with the lads.” (Sunday Independent)

Peter Furtado calls it “not a story of persecution, but a lucid, sane and fascinating account of how gay people negotiated space for themselves within a hostile cultural environment, dealing with policing, housing, geography, identity and politics. . . . It will also make readers think about London and its public spaces differently.”
(Longman-History Today Book Awards 2006-01-10)

"A ground-breaking work. While middle-class lives and writing have tended to compel the attention of most historians of homosexuality, Matt Houlbrook has looked more widely and found a rich seam of new evidence. It has allowed him to construct a complex, compelling account of interwar sexualities and to map a new, intimate geography of London. . . . Houlbrook vividly illustrates the significance of actual places and things in London, and so indicates the importance of material culture to the way men were experiencing themselves and each other. He takes chiffon, suede, lipstick, powder and puffs, urinals, parks, pavements, shops, bars and lodging houses as seriously as sexological tomes and earnest fiction. All of these were, after all, the stuff of everyday life. . . . All this vivid detail is delivered with analytic acumen and theoretical sophistication. We rarely lose sight of the point of stories and anecdotes as they build to illustrate arguments about the city and the plural and shifting understandings of queer sex and affections. Houlbrook reminds us that there was no singular queer type or unified queer scene, and neither is there a seamless queer history telling the story of progressive liberation." (Matt Cook The Times Higher Education Supplement 2005-02-17)

"Houlbrook, in this well-researched and fascinating study, seeks to rescue the lives of men who loved other men . . . from the 'condescension of posterity.' Drawing upon personal memoirs, novels and criminal records he depicts a population which lived in a very different framework from that of gay men today." (Bob Cant The Lecturer)

"This theoretically informed, innovative, cleverly researched, subtle, graceful, brilliant book demonstrates just how good history can be. . . . Althgough Houlbrook has published some of the material before in well-crafted articles, none of them prepares the reader for the sheer power and delight of this book." (Barry Reay American Historical Review)

"Houlbrook weaves together a rich diversity of material—oral and published memoirs, biographies, newspaper reports and opinion pieces. and a vast range of archival materials—into a compelling and thought-provoking narrative." (Lesley A. Hall Urban History)

"In this ambitious study, Matt Houlbrook shows why for many men coming to London and becoming homosexual were part of the same process. . . . Engaging and well written." (Angus McLaren Journal of Modern History)

Interesting history, but jargon-filled text
By Bracton
As social history, the book is very interesting; Houlbrook delves into newspaper archives and the Public Record Office to create a picture of gay London in the early and mid-20th century. He cleverly uses magistrate court records, local council records, and newspaper archives to describe how gay men carved a niche for themselves in London. As a descriptive account of the period, the book works very well, and I finished with a very good sense of what it was like to be gay in London in the period. But the text is full of sociological jargon, Houlbrook seemingly writing to push his facts into almost every theory of minority group emergence and development in the larger society. That makes a lot of the book a hard read if you didn't major in sociology or political science. So, 4 stars because the book is great as history but the history is buried at times by too much academic jargon.

A brilliant history!
By doctorfosser
Perhaps it isn't for non-academics. But this book is an invaluable examination of the tension between public v. private and the ways in which queer subculture played out in the metropole of London. With a vast array of sources, Houlbrook challenges the traditional Whiggish history that suggests there was a "coming out" moment for gay men in London. He skillfully recreates the "underground" society of queer culture that emerged in response to police scrutiny and the increasingly private culture of homosexuality in the 20th century. His four main sections on Police, Places, People, and Politics create an easy to follow structure, and his thread of the public and private practices of queer culture are thoroughly refreshing. This is a must read, perhaps not for the public at large, but for grad students, professors, and those interested in a new interpretation of the progression of gay rights and culture in Europe.

Victory in Jesus: The Bright Hope of Postmillennialism, by Greg L. Bahnsen

We have just ended a century dominated by a multitude of failed prophecies from those who looked to be raptured out of a collapsing world at any moment. The dawning of a new millennium will hopefully cause the Church to pause and consider whether these discredited prophets should be hooted off the stage. Victory in Jesus: The Bright Hope of Postmillennialism offers a sober and faithful examination of Scripture while clearly demonstrating that Christians have every reason to expect the victory of Jesus and the triumph of the gospel as the Great Commission is fulfilled on earth.

The first three chapters (edited from lectures delivered by Dr. Bahnsen), offer a simple and easy to understand presentation of eschatology in general and especially postmillennial eschatology. These chapters are foundational and provide an excellent start for the person who wants a survey of the topic without too much technical or theological language. The last two chapters build on this foundation and layout a more advanced and in-depth explanation of the postmillennial position.

Watch Revelations Come Alive...and More!
By A.B.
If you are looking to better understand the Bible, the book of Revelations, the future of the Church, Fall of Jerusalem, and the Millennial views (Premil, Amil, Postmil), this is a MUST read!

Bahnsen has such a way of capture your attention and explaining Biblical Truths in a clear, understandable, meaty manner that isn't watered down or wishy washy. He lays a solid foundation by using Scripture, Jesus' own words, and historical facts to back up his points. Anyone would have a hard time arguing with or debating his insights.

Watch Revelations come alive, and the whole Bible, and made clearly understandable before your very eyes.

It is my desire to share this book with as many people as a possibly can! It has really sparked a deeper love and understanding of the importance of being a faithful Christian and what that involves.

Christ and His people shall surely win the victory over death and evil! What a bright hope, indeed, for the future!

A Primetime Primer
By Joshua Butcher
One can hardly go wrong in purchasing any book by Greg Bahnsen. Even if you completely disagree with what he argues, it must be admitted that his writing is clear, interesting, and well studied.

The present book is a collection of essays and articles. As such, it doesn't really make for a systematic reading of postmillennialism. However, it is an excellent primer for any discussion of the millennial views, as well as a good introduction to the book of Revelation.

Bahnsen's division of the book of Revelation is quite simple, and contrasts with the more complex divisions offered by amillennialists and dispensationalists. The key contention for his position, which isn't dealt with extensively in this book, is whether the writing of Revelation is to be dated prior to the Fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. Readers interested in that argument should consult Kenneth Gentry's book, Before Jerusalem Fell: Dating the Book of Revelation.

As for the millennial views, perhaps the most eye-opening chapter is the long treatment of the prima facie acceptability of postmillennialism. If Bahnsen's reading of Reformation, Post-Reformation, and Modern Reformation theology is correct, then it is astonishing how many theologians and pastors of those periods espoused postmillennialism in one form or another. Granted, the earlier one seeks to find the view, the more implicitly the doctrine is formulated. However, the distinctions between the millennial views was mostly unnecessary before the rise of dispensationalism in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The last chapter in the book seems particularly directed at modern-day pentecostalism. It handles the present-day person, power, and influence of Satan. It is of general benefit to anyone, but it might be of particular interest to missionaries planning to minister in cultures where spiritualism is prevalent.

All in all the book is an excellent summary of the millennial views, of the book of Revelation, and of Satan-ology. It would be a welcome addition to any theological library.

Get this book now!
By John Bunyan
Greg Bahnsen was studied enough to debate philosophy. But this book, taken from lectures, is in such simple and clear language that you could use it in your youth group. Furthermore, it is packed with several valuable studies. Not only does he deal deftly with the real differences among Premillennial, Amillennial, and Postmillennial interpretations and their implications for practical living; the late, great Bahnsen gives an astoundingly good overview of the book of Revelation in the first chapter - the best broadbrush picture I've ever read. There is also a very important nugget - a goldmine, really - in the final chapters' study about Satan and the various names/titles given to this fallen creature. That alone would merit repackaging the book with a title about a study of Satan and his defeat by the Lord Jesus Christ.

That said, I do not agree with every jot and tittle of his book, and having read other works by the author, I can tell you I disagree with some of his hardline Reformed theological views, as well as aspects of his preterism. Thankfully, he does not go into these matters in this book. No matter what camp you may be in, the many exegetical considerations Bahnsen makes in this work merits a close reading. It will stimulate your faith!
