100 days of solitude, by Daphne Kapsali

"If you have ever stopped yourself doing something you love because 'now just isn't the right time', read this book."

A personal journey that inadvertently became an alternative self-help guide to doing what you love and living as your true self - whoever that might turn out to be, 100 days of solitude is inspiring hundreds of people to seek out and claim the space they need to find themselves and live the life they want.

How far do you need to go to find yourself? What do you have to give up?

Daphne didn't go very far. After too many years of living as a writer who didn't write, she gave up her life in London to spend 100 days of solitude on the remote Greek island of Sifnos, off season, and find out, once and for all, who she really was. Her challenge: to write every day.

One hundred days and one hundred entries later, her question had been answered in more ways than she could have imagined, and the things she'd given up never mattered in the first place. This book is her story, as personal as it is universal, of the most obvious and most fundamental quest of all: to be happy; to do what you love.

Part memoir, part fiction, part philosophy and part travel writing, 100 days of solitude is a collection of one hundred stories, all of them connected and each one self-contained. One hundred essays on choosing uncertainty over security, change over convenience, seeing things for what they truly are, and being surprised by yourself; on love, loss, death and donkeys; on reaching for your dreams, finding enlightenment on a rural road, peeing in public, and locking yourself out of the house; on dangerous herbs, friendly farmers, flying Bentleys and existential cats; and on what it feels like to live in a small, isolated island community through the autumn and winter, to live as a writer who actually writes, and to live as your true, authentic self, no matter who that turns out to be. And to write your own story, the way you want it told; to find your voice, and the courage to let it be heard.

About the Author
Daphne Kapsali is a writer, reluctant yogi, pathological optimist and probably one of the luckiest people alive. In 2014, she gave up her life in London to spend the autumn and winter writing on a remote Greek island; the result is a book entitled 100 days of solitude - 100 separate and interconnected stories on claiming the time and space to live as your true self and do what you love - published in March 2015. She has since published another two books: a novel entitled you can't name an unfinished thing, also produced during her stint as a reclusive author, and This Reluctant Yogi: everyday adventures in the yoga world. All three are available on Amazon, and all three will be bestsellers.

Daphne is a big fan of the law of attraction, the universe, and all things positive, and hopes her story will keep inspiring others to overcome their fears and limiting beliefs, and live the life they want.

NOT your typical Greek island holiday adventure!
By A. Kefalas
Daphne tried (and succeeded) living alone in a Greek island, for more than 3 months. Being a city girl and used to life in big cities, she faced the complete change of pace in her life, in a way that I admire and envy. She "found" all the time she was needed, to write, walk, run, talk to people, do nothing, cook, practice yoga, sleep, and then write some more!

And she wrote all of this in a 100 short stories, one per day...

The book is sometimes funny, sometimes serious, sometimes even scary. It paints a very accurate picture of life in a scarcely (compared to the summer glory days) populated island in the hear of winter.

It is a must read for anyone who has ever thought that he or she needs to stay alone, away from the modern style of life.

A Masterpiece And Future Classic!
By John Darryl Winston
I could write pages upon pages in praise of “100 days of solitude”, but that would take time away from reading the masterpiece itself, and that is what has come of Daphne Kapsali’s journey: a masterpiece and future classic, I’m predicting on the shelf right next to Stephen King’s, On Writing. There’s so much here to talk about that I don’t know where to begin. I’m not much on non fiction or memoir, and I’m not sure exactly where this novel fits, but I can tell you this, there is something here for everyone. It’s great storytelling and writing that makes you feel like you know the author, makes you root for the author, and then long to know her better. I found myself savoring the read, pacing myself as I discovered this a craft book as well, perfect for the burgeoning and seasoned writer alike.

The prose is elegant; Kapsali brings us in with observations like, “my life was like a beautiful, serene lake: deep enough and lovely to look at, but stagnant in places, and closed in. There was nowhere to go,” then leaves us with reflections like, “Loneliness isn’t the price. It’s the space to see other people for what they are, the space to invite them in.”

Kapsali writes about mythology and stories of Apollo I never knew, and she’s funny in a natural quirky way that keeps you laughing to yourself and out loud as the days rush by and you find yourself trying to slow down again, trying to savor what will inevitably come to an end. There’s horror on halloween, fantasy with flying cars, and Christmas cheer. I’m telling this one has it all. There’s even romance on this quaint island of Sifnos with the music of Pink Floyd. I wanted more. It made me sigh … music and love combined can have that effect on the soul. We even get the character we love to hate in Sonia … good riddance to her. My favorite characters are the antagonist aptly named, Antagonist and Boy Cat. I Love the analogy of Boy Cat and the people of Sifnos as to trusting Daphne as one of them on the island. Beard or no beard, I elect, or at least nominate, Daphne Kapsali as the Guru Of All Writers.

Kapsali is a master of the metaphor as she positions the development of a story like the development of a relationship and how we protect and nurture it the same, hopeful of the fruit that it may one day bear. Thank God for self publishing. Thank God for Kickstarter. Thank God for Daphne Kapsali. Formal training is good to be sure, but if you want to be a great tennis or basketball player, watch Serena Williams and Stephen Curry. If want to be a great composer, listen to John Williams, and if you want to be a great writer … read Daphne Kapsali’s “100 days of solitude”, many times, and keep it close by. My highest recommendation and five and a half stars for “100 days Of solitude”! I must order a hardcopy and “you can’t name an unfinished thing” today!

Months Alone
By Rosalie
An aspiring writer allocates herself 100 days of solitude to prove to herself she is a writer. She chooses a family vacation home on an island off season. She is treated as an outsider by the natives and would like to be accepted as one of them. Time passes slowly and disciplining herself is difficult at first. She is grateful for the couple of people who are friendly and she welcomes the occasional stray cat for companionship. She gets to know herself very well and slowly the writing comes and her blog is followed by quite a number of people. Slowly she feels herself accepted and the days pass more quickly. Well written and very interesting.

The Birds of Ecuador: Field Guide, by Robert S. Ridgely, Paul J. Greenfield

The Birds of Ecuador comprehensively treats the nearly 1600 species of birds that can be found in mainland Ecuador. The authors describe Ecuador this way: "One of the wonders of the natural world. Nowhere else is such incredible avian diversity crammed into such a small country. . . . Birds are, happily, numerous in many parts of Ecuador: even the downtown parks of the big cities such as Quito and Guayaquil host their complement."

Volume II, the field guide volume of this two-volume set, contains 96 full-color plates and facing pages of descriptive text, a color map of Ecuador, along with two line drawings of bird anatomy, 115 silhouette outlines, and nearly 1600 distribution maps. All species are illustrated in full color, including migrants and vagrants and visually distinctive subspecies. The text focuses on the field identification aspects of each species, including their behavior, vocalizations, and nest appearance.

The two volumes of The Birds of Ecuador are available separately or may be purchased as a slipcased set.

Bird Bible for Ecuador arrives. Strengthen your doormats.
By PROF ANTHONY P PAYNE
There are probably only two ways of approaching this book. Firstly on your knees, bowing low and, secondly, after several weeks of serious weight-training. I have recently come back from a short bird-watching holiday to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. I knew these books were coming out, but they weren't out in time for me. So, like thousands of birdwatchers in the past, I had to make do with Hilty & Brown's "Birds of Colombia" (Princeton University Press) as the next best thing. Hilty & Brown is an EXCELLENT book, but Ecuador has some 500 more bird species than Colombia and is arguably the richest birding country on the planet. A comparison is instructive. Hilty & Brown's paperback covers its remit in 820 pages and weighs 1.3kg. Ridgely & Greenfield consists of two paperback volumes totalling nearly 1600 pages which,in their thick cardboard slipcase, weigh 3.1 kg ! Hence the need for weight-training - even so, these may be more than you can comfortably carry and even the authors suggest you leave one volume at home ! Both Paperbacks are called "The Birds of Ecuador" but one is sub-titled "Vol. I. Status, Abundance & Taxonomy", whilst the other is "Vol. II. Field Guide". They are VERY different. Volume II is the more immediately traditional. It is 740 pages long, has nearly 100 colour plates illustrating the birds of Ecuador and is supported by a text giving details of each bird, habits, voice etc. and a distribution map. Volume I is 850 pages long and only has one illustration. It has an 80-page section on various topics such as ecosystems, migration, conservation, a history of Ecuadorian birdwatching, a gazeteer. The rest is a detailed account for each species of abundance and distribution in different districts and important birding sites in Ecuador. Are there any limitations ? Yes, chiefly geographical ones. The authors have deliberately left out the Galapagos (which belong to Ecuador) and have restricted seabirds to those that can be seen for a few kilometres out to sea. They also omit the large "Disputed Territory" which either belongs to Ecuador or Peru depending on whose map you look at - on balance this is probably a wise precaution. Some of the illustrations look as if they have come from Ridgely's masterwork on the Birds of South America but since this is only appearing at the rate of about one volume every decade this is hardly a criticism. Do you need both volumes - given that you can buy them separately if you want ? The answer is probably YES. I think if you had only bought volume I you would definitely NEED volume II - the Field Guide. If you had only bought Volume II you would WANT Volume I as well. Ecuador should be on the wish list of every travelling birdwatcher and these books should therefore be on the shopping list. Without serious competition, they are the immediate "Bible" for the birds of Ecuador and should be treated with reverence as a labour of love, a work of high scholarship and a delight to birdwatchers everywhere.

A first-class new South American bird guide
By A Customer
This field guide to the birds of Ecuador is the first covering this small country with a staggering 1600 species of birds.
The text, focusing on identification and describing appearance, habitat, habits, and voice, is detailed and incorporates the latest information from the people most knowledgeable about Ecuador's birds. The paintings on the 96 plates are beautiful, among the finest of any field guide anywhere, and seem thoroughly accurate. The birds are painted in standardized poses, which allows a focus on identification. Unlike almost all field guides to countries in the tropics, all are by one artist, with the resulting benefits of consistency. The guide seems to make the identification of difficult families like flycatchers or antbirds or Ecuador's 132 species of hummingbirds easier (well, less impossible) than ever. Unlike other South American guides, all species, including migrants, are illustrated, and all in color.
The 1600 species distribution maps are not at the world-class level of North American maps or even the new India guide, but they are tremendously helpful and, given the state of information in the tropics, a great accomplishment and a major advance. It is convenient that they are right in the text, with altitude information (critical for the Andean region) attached.
Since Ecuador has about half of the species in South America, this book will be valuable for anyone looking at birds in the Amazon basin or northern South America.
Note that the field guide is volume 2 of the set. Volume I has detailed information on taxonomy, status, and especially occurence and distribution within Ecuador, plus general information about Ecuadorian geography and ornithology, which would have made the field guide impossibly large. (It's massive as is.)

HUGE and No Galapagos Birds. Unmanageable as a "Field Guide". Disappointed.
By Argo
While this 'field guide' to Ecuador has excellent plates it suffers in three very important ways. 1) It is huge! Yes, Ecuador has about twice as many birds as are typically seen in US guides, but because of the added text this book isn't going to be a practical travel book. 2) the plates and distribution are on different pages. When you use a guide like this in the field you find yourself having to spend more time flipping through the book. and (most importantly) 3) It EXCLUDES the Galapagos Islands! yes, there are plenty of guides for the Galapagos Islands. But if you bring them AND this book you are looking at some serious SERIOUS weight.

So if they named this "Birds of Mainland Ecuador", dropped the 'Field Guide' designation and clarified the location, I think I would be up there in the 5 star range. But then I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

I would think they could do the same book more like Garrigues' "Birds of Costa Rica". It would be a much more useful guide.

I suppose what one COULD do is slice up the plates and bring them, but then you wouldn't have the distribution maps. That goes against the grain through.

Mastering Chess: A Course in 25 Lessons, by Danny Kopec

Mastering Chess is a unique book in that it covers the essentials which every aspiring chess player must know well (from Novice to Expert) to reach the chess Master level. The first edition was popular for some 20 years (from 1985 - 2005) while in print with four different publishers. It has been rated one of the five best chess books of its kind. Each Chapter of this new edition has new material added and the book has essentially doubled in size. Each Chapter includes new Exercise positions with solutions. Besides being a self-study self help book, it was designed for chess teachers and chess courses. First there is a spritely written 1st Chapter on Tactics and Combinations by Geoff Chandler of Edinburgh Scotland. Mr. Chandler has updated his popular work with observations of play and missed opportunities from Internet play. The 2nd Chapter introduces a new author (Life Master Ian Harris) and a new approach to how openings can be learned. It presents Dr. Kopec's idea that openings can be learned from the perspective of the following five goals: 1) Development 2) Center Control 3) King Safety 4) Space and 5) Material Balance. Dr. Kopec has been espousing this idea for a number of years in his lectures and chess camps. If effective, it is a novel way of teaching a subject that entails volumes and volumes of books over a number of centuries! Mr. Harris has developed this Chapter spanning some 50 pages in conjunction with Dr. Kopec. Dr. Kopec has added new material to his Chapter 3: How To Analyze a Position including lessons on the topics: The Point Count Method, Grand Central Station, and Don't Believe Everything Your Computer Tells You. New exercises have also been added at the end of this Chapter. Chapter 4 (by Chris Morrison) has also been extended with an additional lesson entitled "Good and Bad Pieces" and number of additional exercises. Chapter 5 (by the late Ian Mullen) has been extended with a lesson entitled "More Advanced Endings". This Chapter has always proven very useful for teachers and courses on the endgame. The material is suitable for players from Novice to Master! There are also additional exercises for this chapter. Finally, there is a new Appendix B: including Mastery Lessons by the World Champions which presents games by World Champions illustrating their skill in at least one of the five Chapters of the book: 1) Tactics and Combinations 2) Opening Principles and Ideas 3) How to Analyze a Position 4) How to Formulate a Plan and 5) Essential Endgame Knowledge.

Dr. Kopec was New York High School Champion at 14, National Master at 17, Scottish Champion in 1980, 2nd-equal in the Canadian Closed in 1984, and International Master in 1985. An Outstanding Chess Course!
By Lenny
MASTERING CHESS, by IM Danny Kopec et al., is indeed in its second edition, but it is also in the fourth printing thereof. As of this writing, I actually possess both the latest rendition and the earlier second printing. I am delighted to report that some of issues identified with the earlier release/releases have indeed been addressed, beginning with the “dot matrix font” to which “Voltron” alluded in his earlier review below. Moreover, the book has also been expanded somewhat to 288 pages.

Of course, a single volume cannot possibly teach everything one needs to know about chess, yet Kopec and his colleagues do an admirable job presenting so much vital material – tactics, strategy, and even specific theoretical principles for openings and endgames. The material is presented clearly, with precise explanatory comments and excellent illustrations from either contrived positions or specific games. Moreover, the authors provide a set of exercises at the end of each chapter, including four new tests added for the second edition. The problems cover a vast range in difficulty, from tactics I could solve at a glance to various positions that perhaps even grandmasters may not have understood as well as they should have. [Having flubbed one set miserably, I shall obviously need to study to those chapters more carefully!]

While I find the entire work most valuable, I must call specific attention to Lessons 17-21 of Chapter 4, which address the problem of “How To Formulate A Plan.” So many club players reach tolerably good positions but suddenly come to the realization they don’t have any idea how to proceed. I heartily recommend this section to those who have ever stared at the board and felt utterly “clueless”!

All told, I am completely satisfied with this latest printing of the second edition. Problems with the print or font have been addressed, and the material is absolutely excellent. IM Kopec is perhaps too modest in his “Introduction,” in which he suggests the work is “geared toward the club player (1450-1750). I would extend that rating strength through Class A (1999 USCF rating). I truly wish I had had such a text 50-odd years ago!

Good for begginers or someone new to the game.
By Voltron
This reminds me of the book idiots guide to chess, but in a lecture format that covers a bit more topics. This book is probably best suited for Chess coaches who teach at yhe scholastic level and want a guide. .or a self learner who is learning about chess for the first time, It will cover all essential knowldge begginers should know, like basic tactics, combinations, pawn structures, development. The chapter has excercises at the end and also has move by move discussion of a game. My only real issue with the book is the font. The book I have is 2013 version but it uses a dot matrix font which makes its harders on the eyes, so i deducted a star for quality of the print. Overall nice book for begginers, and chess instructors looking for a guide. Stronger players may not like this book. I have attached a picture of the font used in the book.

General Business Anthropology, 2nd Edition, by Robert Guang Tian, Alfons van Marrewijk, Michael P Lillis

The textbook contains thirteen chapters, each of which attempts to synthesize the research on a particular prominent theme in business anthropology. Further, we have tried to ensure that pioneering and key works are referenced, but space limitations prevent us from being able to adopt an all-inclusive approach. This is not intended to slight any researcher whose publication may be omitted. Indeed, some of our own close colleagues are included in this very company. However, an exhaustive review of all literature in the field is beyond the scope of this slender volume. Students are encouraged to work with the endnotes for each chapter, in searching out additional references. We hope that the text provides an adequate start in this direction.

For thousands of years, women were banned from studying the spiritual tradition of Kabbalah. Karen Berg changed that. As the first female Kabbalist, she opened its doors to all who want to understand its wisdom. In Dios usa lapiz labial, she shares that wisdom exclusively with women (and with men who want to better understand women), revealing that women hold a special place in the universe and enjoy a spiritual advantage over men. With a special emphasis on how Kabbalah can enhance relationships, Berg covers topics such as finding a soul mate; the sacred power of sex; and the importance of friendship, sharing, forgiveness, and tolerance. Structured around ancient Kabbalistic tools, the book shows women how to reconnect with God and find new purpose and joy.

In this new symphonic collection, Agard casts his unique spin on the intermingling strands of British history, and leads us into metaphysical and political waters. Cross-cultural connections are played out in a variety of voices and cadences. Prospero and Caliban have a cricket match recounted in calypso-inspired rhythms, and in the long poem, ""Water Music of a Different Kind,"" the incantatory orchestration of the Atlantic's middle passage, becomes a moving counterpoint to Handel's Water Music.

Booth's Maps of London Poverty, 1889: East & West London (Old House), by Charles Booth

Two maps of Victorian London colored street by street show the lifestyle of the inhabitants from the wealthy upper classes to the vicious and semi-criminal lowest class. These two maps classify London streets into seven categories from the very poor lowest class mainly in the east end (but with some surprising enclaves in the fashionable west) right up to the wealthy upper classes in Marylebone and Mayfair. A fascinating resource for genealogists and all lovers of London's past.

Charles Booth was appalled by conditions in London's docklands and vowed to do something about it. Realising that the situation needed to be accurately assessed he published numerous surveys that reported on the living conditions, lifestyle and income of Londoners.

To make things worse, she learns that Jace does not want her there, and Simon has been thrown in prison by the Shadowhunters, who are deeply suspicious of a vampire who can withstand sunlight.

As Clary uncovers more about her family’s past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. With Valentine mustering the full force of his power to destroy all Shadowhunters forever, their only chance to defeat him is to fight alongside their eternal enemies. From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up–In the two previous books, Clary learns that she is a member of a race of demon-hunters and that she has the special ability to create new versions of the runes that give these Shadowhunters their power. Her mother has been hiding the truth from her for years to protect her from her father, Valentine, a cult-leader-turned-villain who is seeking to gain control over the Shadowhunters by obtaining the three Mortal Instruments. Now, Valentine has only one Mortal Instrument left to find, and the Shadowhunters must ally with the despised Downworlders, including vampires, werewolves, and fairies, to prepare their final defense. The question of whether Clary will be able to harness her unique abilities in time to help–and whether they will let her–is sidelined by the question of whether her love interest, Jace, is really her brother. Though the story is hampered by predictability and overblown writing, Clare continues her talent for mixing hip, modern humor with traditional fantasy, and fans eagerly awaiting the series conclusion should come away more than satisfied.–Eliza Langhans, Hatfield Public Library, MA

From Booklist
In search of a potion for her dying mother, Clary sneaks into the City of Glass and is immediately caught up in a life-and-death battle. As the children of the Moon (werewolves), Night (vampires), and Faerie gather for a war that will rend the heavens, Clary calls upon her untrained powers to control an angel who will save or destroy them all. Readers should be familiar with the first two installments in the Mortal Instruments series, but there is nevertheless plenty of romance, loss, honor, and betrayal to make the journey worthwhile. An experienced storyteller, Clare moves the plot quickly to a satisfying end. Grades 8-11. --Cindy Welch

A satisfying ending
By A. Reader
Although my expectations were too high for City of Bones, I have to say that the series has gotten better with every book, leading to a very satisfying City of Glass read. Questions get answered; plot points get tied up, and you're left with a happy fuzzy feeling in the end.

I really enjoyed the characters in the books, especially CoG. Each character has really come a long way, and even when I disagreed with a character, I felt that they were completely within character; their personalities drove the plot, rather than a having series of random events they were just responding to. I also love that - with a few exceptions (Malachi, Sebastian) - they were all so multidimensional, shades of gray in a morally ambiguous world.

On Jace and Clary - I'd give this a 4/5, mainly because I've always felt a little awkward about their relationship, and it's not just the sibling thing. There were some beautiful and heartbreaking moments - again, back to characterization, I was definitely thinking "That's so Jace!" sometimes - but I also got the feeling that their relationship was unnecessarily drawn out. Maybe it's because I never got a good sense of Clary's relationship to the Lightwoods (early on, Clary saying to Isabelle, "But I thought you liked me!" and then later confronting Isabelle about not liking her, for example). But even though I'm happy with how things ended up, I think Clary and Jace really shined brighter when they were apart in this book, than in their scenes together.

On the other hand, some of the "minor" characters were wonderful. Alec and Magnus are a riot ("Your city is under attack...The wards have broken, and the streets are full of demons. And you want to know why I haven't called you?"). Aldertree reminded me of Umbridge. Simon grows up, while still maintaining his nerdiness.

I was not as fond of the thematic progress of the book, possibly because I'm re-reading Harry Potter right now and it seems so familiar, and the same ideas are in almost every fantasy book. You are the sum of your actions, not of your birth. Do what is right, and not what is easy. Villians always end up defeated because they just had to show off, and forgot some key thing. People are never who they say they are, and never trust a death to be final.

So I tend to be an impatient reader, and this might just be my fault, but I also found that skipping pages in the book didn't really make me miss much. You'll get the whole story just from reading Joceyln's talk with Clary and then the last chapter. The middle of the book was great, with some great moments, but I didn't feel the same compunction to read every word, the way I do with some other books.

Overall, even with my negative points, I'm really happy with this book. You'll laugh (Cassie has some great lines, and I'm a fan of anything nerdy). You'll be frustrated with the characters. Sometimes, you'll wonder why you didn't think of it first. In the end, this book delivers a very satisfying read - I'd imagine it sort of tastes like butterbeer.

GO JACE!
By forensicanthro99
This was the best book in the series. Lots of action and humor and romance balanced perfectly into one book. New characters like "Sebastian Verlac", Aline Penhallow and Amatis make this book the best. Even if you were skeptical of the series because Clary and Jace are siblings, read this book anyways!!! Because the series was originally a trilogy, this book has a very, very, very exciting/scary/amazing ending that will make you glad Cassie wrote more books. Also check out the Infernal Devices if you loved this series. Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince (and soon Clockwork Princess) are also shadowhunter books that take place in the 1870's and have characters like Magnus Bane, Camille Belcourt, and even the amazing Will Herondale, Jem Carstairs, and Gideon and Gabriel Lightwood. Also Consul Wayland and Brother Enoch appear in these books.

A Perfect Ending
By Heather
I couldn't have asked for a better ending. I got everything I wanted. I don't want to summarize the book, I'll leave that to others, but I will say that there are some heartbreakingly beautiful scenes in this book. The characters became more developed and more endearing, especially Jace. His sarcastic wit is certainly present in this book; however, he is no longer hiding behind his carefully constructed facade. His torment over Clary is glaringly obvious from the first chapter.

I noticed that another review stated that she wished Clary and Jace hadn't have been as close as they were until they knew the truth about not being related, but I have to disagree. Clary was the only person in the world that made Jace feel like he belonged and she was the only person he belonged to and the fact that she didn't turn away from him when he told her that he loved her probably meant more to him than her waiting until she knew the truth to love him back the same way. He had resigned himself to love her always, no matter what, and I'm glad that he got to know that she had resigned herself to the same fate.

Cassandra Clare works magic with this novel. The excitement begins on the first page and doesn't stop until the final sentence. She brings everything full circle for a completely satisfying ending - even though fans would be more than happy to read about these beloved characters forever, I know I will miss them.
