A very fun retelling of the Psyche/Cupid myth!

My Opinion: I received a copy of this book free of charge through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is my first experience with the Myth-O-Mania series of books and I have to say that I absolutely loved it! Since each book tackles a different myth, you don't have to read them in order to be able to follow what's happening, which is good for me because I plan on going back and reading them from the beginning, that's how much fun I had reading Nice Shot, Cupid!

This book tells the"true" story of Cupid and Psyche according to Hades, God of the Underworld, because, as he puts it, "When it comes to myths, you can count on me, Hades, to give you the real deal." I have to admit that Hades has always been my favorite god because he's so dark and mysterious, dealing with the dead all the time, etc. Imagine my surprise when I found out that he has a wicked sense of humor and a great deal of love for his family, and mortals who may need his help. The humor in this book is tailored to the MG age group, i.e. "Yo, Hades!" Cupid said. "Am I ever glad to see you, man!" ... "Yo, Cupid," I called back to him, wondering what exactly "Yo!" meant. He calls his wife, Persephone, P-Phone, and drives around in a chariot pulled by his steeds, Harley and Davidson!

Hades is also quite the romantic. When Cupid falls in love with Psyche but is too embarrassed to show her what he looks like (because in this series, Cupid is a teenager, covered in zits, with a mouth full of metal and greasy hair), he kidnaps her and takes her to one of Zeus's palaces where he speaks to her from behind a curtain (which she promises never to look behind), and figures that he'll keep her there like that until he gets through this awkward teenage phase he feels stuck in. Hades tries to help Cupid realize that he should be honest with Psyche and trust that she will see past his appearance to the love struck man inside, but unfortunately, Cupid's mother dearest, Aphrodite, shows up and all of Hades work goes to hell in a handbasket!

This was really such a fun book that I would recommend it to all MG readers who love a good laugh and don't mind reading an alternative "truth" to all of our favorite Greek myths :D I give this book a very enthusiastic 5 stars!

This fast-paced, breezy slang-filled version of the Cupid and Psyche myth changes plenty of details, but actually stays fairly true to the basic plot arc of the original myth. First, we get a quick rundown on who all the major players are. The story is narrated by Hades, who in this version, is more of a misunderstood good guy who's been given a bad rap. Cupid is an awkward teenager with pimples and braces, accidentally scratching himself with one of his arrows causing him to fall in love with... himself! He sounds like a surfer, peppering his speech with lots of phrases like, "dude" and "man." His mother, Aphrodite, is a bossy, funny woman prone to speaking in Italian, since she rose fully-grown out of the Italian sea. In the meantime, Psyche has been promised to marriage to Cupid, and is goaded by her sisters Muffy and Buffy into finding out what, exactly, her invisible husband looks like. In doing so, she angers Aphrodite, and must out-perform Hercules' labors to get back in Aphrodite's good graces again. The silliness level in this book is easily amped up to 11, what with Hades calling Psyche by the nickname, "P-phone," and plenty of anachronisms like motorcycle riding, WWF-style wrestling and so on.

This reprint (first published in 2002) is sure to cash in on the Percy Jackson excitement with a lot of young readers. In terms of tone, and reading level, this will appeal to readers who are right on board with goofy humor like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but may find Percy Jackson just a skoche too challenging at the moment.

Be sure this is what you expected.

Just to clarify, while this book is full of colored pictures, the maps are not in great detail. You see segments of maps from afar, so that you may have an overview and a list of maps to research further, but not maps to study. I don't see a review mentioning that.

What this and what it is not......
This is not an atlas. This is not even a map book.

It is though filled with interesting maps.

This is a great book for those who look at maps in a more cultural or historical way. Maps are great ways to look at the world over the eons and attempt to understand the world as it develops in different time frames.

It is written well and compile in an intelligent easy to understand format. If you love history and culture and like maps this is for you. You will find new and useful information. A good purchase.

AN EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL AND INFORMATIVE BOOK OF MAPS

This is a beautiful 10 X 12 coffee table book. It is a DK book which are noted for their stunning photographs. Although the book has a dust jacket, the cover of the book is identical to the jacket and not a plain color as is the case with many other books in this class.

The maps themselves are both informative and beautiful. Many of them were created for nobility, the clergy and the wealthy upper class rather than for seamen or merchant travelers who would put them to good and practical use. Thus, many of them are more art than science.

The maps begin with classical period maps from the forth century to the seventh century BCE. They saw the world, or parts of it, quite differently than we see it today. The Ptolemy world map is one such. Some, like the Babylonian World map are made of clay and are difficult to decipher.

Maps from many countries of origin in both the Western and Eastern worlds have been included. I especially liked the Mercator world map of 1569. I would like to have a full size copy of it for my wall. The original is four feet by almost seven feet in length. In America, nothing west of the Great Lakes is noted.

In addition to maps of the land masses there are maps of the sea floor and even a map of the lunar surface.

This is a marvelous book that one can spend hours looking over. There is some explanatory text but mostly the maps speak for themselves. Since man first learned how to make graphic marks on rock 40,000 years ago, humans have created maps as a way of conceptualizing themselves in relation to their enviornment. So maps are as much about our existence as they are about the orientation of lands.

Anyone who loves and enjoys maps would be enthralled with this beautiful volume of 256 pages.

Dry and boring writing style

The book looked promising... I wished I hadn't bought it. The writing style is dry and a bit boring. If you can get into this place by special appointment you can see this thing. Some passages drone on with the authors opinions: "By prior appointment... you can visit the Pinacoteca Manfrediana... Unfortunately, a large number of the paintings are of little interest..." Secret Venice is just not written in an engaging manner, more like listening to a pompous acquaintance bestow his "pearls of wisdom" upon you.

not too much inside

The book is well written but it is not for learning nuclear physics. There is nothing inside except a nice list of topics with a very superficial view of them. So it is like a good syllabus but does not contain any real pieces of useful stuff for newcomers to the topic.
I found quite good for general approaches when no details at all are needed (like tales or just a narrative about nuclear matter). Also, if you want to do the end chapter problems you have to go for the more conventional books, so again, it is just a nice syllabus. Not to mention that there is no insight at all on how experimental work is related with nuclear physics, even the scattering cross section is highly theoretical and far from reality.
So, it is not bad but not useful for practical purposes, it is a good guide but not recomended as a study book on the subject, like Krane's, just to mention one.

Excellent introduction to nuclear physics

I found Cottingham-Greenwood an excellent text to introduce any physics student to the field of nuclear physics. This text is best suited to senior undergraduates with a one-semester course in quantum mechanics.

The authors have selected fifteen topics (check 'LOOK INSIDE!'), covering fundamental as well as applied aspects of nuclear physics. Each chapter is supplemented with 5-11 exercises. Beware that this is not an encyclopedic text with detailed derivations. The advantage of this approach is that one can focus on ideas, leaving the algebra as back-of-the-envelope exercises or discussions with the instructor. All that extra writing is saved in size: excellent format, good paper quality and easy-to-read fonts.

Excellent introductory text, or supplement to a more thorough and advanced textbook.

Excellent Introduction

I found this book to be very readable and an excellent introduction to the field. I agree with previous reviews that derivations are lacking, because this book is a more qualitative introduction to the subject, which was especially important for me as I took nuclear physics my second semester in undergraduate physics.

Krane's standard text will serve as a better reference book and provides more detailed mathematics, but it would also take a person much longer to read Krane's book, and Krane's book is appropriately more expensive. I also highly doubt that a one-semester undergraduate course could cover all of Krane's text, where as this book can be covered in one semester.

I highly recommend this book to new students of nuclear physics without a background in quantum mechanics.

A combination of techniques used in quilting and origami, quiltagami involves folding and stitching fabric into animal, flower, and leaf shapes that delicately pop out from quilted blocks that can be displayed on their own or integrated into a more elaborate project. Hiney uses clear color photos (unfortunately, not always carefully keyed to the text) and step-by-step drawings to illustrate the folding and stitching process, stressing throughout that practice makes perfect. An attractive array of these blocks, in prechosen color schemes, follows, each one introduced with a list of fabric and notion requirements and a photo of a finished product. Pattern diagrams ready for enlargement are pictured and clearly labeled. Great Idea...Poor Implementation

This book looks wonderful and the quilts the author has made are beautiful, however the directions for the "origami" are nearly incomprehensible. I have become completely frustrated by the written instructions and the drawings only make sense on the first few steps of each project. An origami duck, which should take 15 minutes to produce, had four adults completely stumped for an hour. I only recommend this book if the author comes with it to explain how the pieces are made. Perhaps a video would be a good solution.
