He has contributed to numerous publications on Italian art, particularly on architecture and architectural theory of the 15th to 18th centuries. Bernd Evers completed his doctorate in art history before embarking on a career as a librarian; since 1985 he has been director of the Kunstbibliothek der Staatlichen Museen in Berlin. He has published numerous articles on book and library studies.

Architecture theory and history

I didn't find this book until the end of the semester, but it covers what we have been discussing in both architectural theory and history. I would recomend this for any architecture students who want a quick overview of prominent figures of architectural thought with illustrations that help to clearly convey their ideas. This book has many of the same pictures/drawings as are featured in much more expensive history books (like Spiro Kostof's "Settings and Rituals"). This book is only an overview, but will be a quite helpful addition to any student's library.

One of the greatest books written about the problem of meaninglessness and emptiness in modern life - and the solution...absolute faith (courage) to believe in a "god beyond God." Step off a cliff into nothingness, in full faith that a radiant loving God will build a bridge under your feet as you take each new step...and accompany you -within your own body- inside your heart, in loving compassion. If you are feeling emptiness and meaninglessness and purposeless, then rejoice! What you are feeling is a sacred emptiness, that can now be filled...you only have to ask, and the radiant Divine love of God will fill you overflowing with radiant joy, love, acceptance, peace and serenity. Like sunlight on ice, Divine Grace will melt away all your pain, hurt & loneliness, and replace it with Divine energy. These are the "gifts of the Holy Spirit" that St. Paul writes about in the New Testament Bible. Paul Tillich answers the problem of the existentialist crisis within one's own mind by a call to faith in something you cannot see, but can only understand through a practice of radical faith in the radiant compassion and loving-kindness, total acceptance of a Divine and loving God. The Action of absolute faith - in spite of no empirical evidence to support it - creates the Presence of God...the EXPERIENCE of God and the energy and feeling of radiant joy, and total acceptance and gentle loving-kindness.

This book convinced me to toss aside scientific, logical, brain-based inquiry to find peace, and surrender and invite an "imaginary" force and feeling into my body - specifically my heart. The force that creates and sustains all life, the eternal and infinite source that also when coupled with loving-kindness compassion, is like water and sunlight on a plant. You will heal, grow and thrive when you tap into this source through your heart, once you quiet your mind and go into your body...The Kingdom is Within....your very own heart - through the emotion of loving-kindness.

A classic work

This is a classic work by one of the great philosopher theologians of the 20th century. I am co-author of the standard biography of Paul Tillich. He was a great teacher and thinker. This is one of his seminal works which was a best seller upon publication and remains so today. Some philosophical/theological background is helpful in reading this extraordinary volume.

Best All-Around Class Handbook

This is by far my favorite "Complete _____'s Handbook." Nearly everything in here is essential if you want to have a real thief, and not just a bunch of stats. The kits are some of the best I've seen. Other Handbooks have outlandish or just downright worthless kits (for instance, take that Ranger kit that turns you into a tree!). In this one, however, every kit is unique, and yet believable and fun to play. For a long time, this handbook was the only information available on Thieves' Guilds. If that's what you're after, however, I'd recommend Den of Theieves, which fleshes it out even more and provides all sorts of adventure possibilities. Round this book out with new equipment and magic items, and you have a classic.

Awesome Complete Handbook

If you have ever played or have ever wanted to play a thief character you need this book. Before I got this handbook, no one really wanted to play the thief in the group and usually was just a second character for someone. Thieves just open locks and occasionally fire their bows right?
WRONG. This book opens up many faucets of the class that I had never thought of and expands on the rest. The kits in this book really give character to your thief characters. Ever wonder why thugs were always thieves class, well check out the bandit or thug kits. I have heard complaints about the kits not having a lot benefits\hindrances (and the majority don't), but what they do offer is flair and adjusts abilities (including thief abilities as well as proficiencies) to better fit the thief's many roles.
This is also the only handbook that has any good new proficiencies. I especially liked alertness, fast talking, intimidation, and observation. I also liked the new equipment section. WOW! It has all kinds of cool stuff that would make any thief character's mouth water and don't even unbalance game play. The book is worth it just for this and the kits.
But there is more. The book also gives new info on lock picking (advanced locks, modifying checks) and on poisons and antidotes. There is a great deal of info on thieves' guilds. A LOT. Probably even more than you would want to know, but that's okay. Use what you like skip what you don't. If thieves' guilds even show up in your campaigns, I highly recommend this for DMs. The book also gives useful info on running thief based campaigns that gave me lots of ideas on how to make life in the city a little more interesting. Ever want to run a campaign solely in Greyhawk City or Waterdeep, well try it.
All in all this is a great resource for players and DMs alike.

One of the finest guide books in the world!

If it is a single thief you want, or a whole thieves guild, this is the ONLY book you need! The character subclasses such as cutpurse give such a depth into the game. I have used this to develope a guide run city, with 150+ guide members, from all of the subclasses listed in the book. It gives such depth! As a thief user myself it is now indispensible. Even the new item lists are superb! Get it if you use thieves at all!!!

About the Author

Mark C. Gridley is an active jazz musician and educator. He has done field research in Africa, the Caribbean, and all the jazz centers of America. His books have been translated into five foreign languages. His articles appear in the Grove Dictionaries of Music, Encyclopaedia Britannica, The Musical Quarterly, The Black Perspective in Music, The Instrumentalist, and Jazz Educators Journal.

David Cutler is a jazz and classical composer and pianist. His compositions have been performed throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. He currently serves on the Duquesne University and Brevard Summer Music Festival faculties.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Jazz

This is the most accurate, user-friendly intro to jazz. It focuses on the music, not the personal lives of the musicians. It explains, patiently and systematically, in luminously clear prose, what jazz is and how to get the most out of listening to it. It details the origins of jazz as well as the distinguishing characteristics of all the major styles: Dixieland, Swing, Bebop, Cool, Hard Bop, "Free Jazz" and Avant-Garde of the 60s and 70s, and Jazz-Rock Fusion. It profiles 144 musicians' contributions (their sources, their styles, and lists of the others they influenced) and provides classification of more than 1000 other musicians, in easy-to-understand categories. Strategies for locating the best albums for all the top musicians. Optional CD of historic recordings is available. Optional CD of narrated demonstrations of the jazz instruments, song forms and methods that jazz musicians use to make their music is also available. This book connects the dots...

I had begun to get serious about immersing myself in Jazz. A little dive around the corner was showing excellent Jazz groups and I had to take the opportunity to discover this great art form. My daughter lent me a textbook she had from college.

I immediately picked it up and for several hours was scanning it backwards and forwards. I kept referencing all the artists and songs I had heard of all my life and this book very handily made the connections. It's loaded with clear and concise and insightful teaching aids.

I can now understand much better the overall experience and history of jazz. The technical parts are still quite overwhelming, but the author's writing is very articulate and non-judgmental. I've rarely seen a more learning friendly book. As I started to mention, you can start anywhere you want in this book and just take what you can handle.

It occurred to me that a popularized version of this book might sell quite well as the author clearly has the stuff to do that.

not for jazz scholars alone

It has been nearly 30 years since Mark Gridley's first edition of Jazz Styles appeared, and no other treatment of jazz styles comes close to his careful analysis of how jazz has been made since its inception. It is a work of great and serious scholarship, an invaluable resource for students of the genre. Yet, Jazz Styles is also an enjoyable and entertaining companion for anyone who wants to become a more perceptive listener to jazz. The Listening Guides are useful even for those 'veteran'

jazz fans familiar with the works described. Gridley will take you to ever-deeper levels of appreciation for jazz in all its varieties.
