The first or the last

I just read this book recently after a long and torturous 40 year search for the "truth." It is like I have dogged Dennis' every step to finally arrive, in my understanding, at what he so simply expresses in this charming book. His list of references looks like the line up in my bookcase. As I read the book I witnessed myself sighing a series of quiet "yeap, yeap,..., yeaps." I was neither elated nor frightened by what I read, rather I was overtaken with an attitude of resigned recognition of the undeniable and blindingly obvious - like it or not, how else could it possibly be? I wondered what I would have felt if this were to have been the first book that I had read on this subject. I can't say for sure but my guess would probably have been either total dismissal or recoiling fear - in both cases my ego would have been running for its life. I think this because about 20 years ago I had both reactions when I first started to understand the real implications of realisation or enlightenment - no ego, no future, no past - no me! So what can I say to you about it? I don't really know, but if this is the first or the last book that you read on your search, what I can say is that you will, sooner or later, if you are serious, be forced to sigh in total resignation. As you go around and around the block you will have no choice but to finally admit that you will have to leave the block to parts unknown to ever have a hope of satisfying your insatiable thirst, and it will be the very last thing that you would have expected or hoped for but there it is - neatly and clearly summarised in Dennis' book. Do yourself a favour and just read it all the way through even if you then drop it and turn away from it for the next twenty years, you will be back one day and you will be glad. And then you will need and want to read, "I AM THAT" by Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj.

Dennis Waite - Crowning Glory

I read the book with the ardour of a high school student.
Dennis has done a wonderful job in covering the entire gamut of
advaita all the way from its Vedic roots to the masters of the new age. The effort is commendable both for its contents and the way they have been organized in a very systematic manner.
The paperback has eighteen chapters, perhaps an intentional or
unintentional take on the Bhagwad GItA, the advata classic, and makes very delicious reading for an aspiring palate. No wonder therefore that masters and veterans like Isaac Shapiro, Leo Hartong, Jerry Katz, Alan Jacob, Dr. Gregory Goode, Pamela Wilson, K. Sadananda and Jay Lakhani are all praise for it.
Dennis, as I know him from his profound contributions at Yahoo Group Advaitin and other web communities is a systematic researcher. The pains he has taken to collect, organize and elaborate information is obvious from beginning to end.
As the veterans have eloquently noted, it is a precious reference
book too for all advaitins. Dennis maintains a well-organized, very helpful website ... Just a peep into it reveals his great mastery and involvement. This book, the crowning glory, brilliantly supplements his web efforts. It should therefore prove a precious asset to libraries of philosophy the world over.
Dennis, the philosopher, doesn't forget to smile. In fact, he smiles all through, infectiously so, so that the reader keeps smiling too! Reading his book is like taking a stroll on the shores in the evening breeze in the company of a friendly uncle with the ocean of advaita roaring beside. Yet, Dennis is less avuncular than friendly. And, there lies the secret of this book, which is quite unlike others on the subject that leave the reader more confused than enlightened.
The book is a must for Westerners and English-educated Easterners interested in Advaita. Any book on advaita should stand above continental diversities. It is very heartening that Dennis and his work stand tall and tower over them.
I am sure all advaitins, both aspiring and accomplished, would cherish to possess this book and ruminate on its illustrative examples.

Not For Beginners

This book is definitely not for a beginning watercolorist and I don't think the author and publishers intended it to be. If you are just beginning to paint in watercolor in a realistic style I recommend starting with books aimed for beginners first. That said, for high-intermediate to advanced watercolorists who want to learn new ways to add life to their paintings this is one of the best books out there using the pouring process as the primary means vs. painting with a brush. That doesn't mean Ms. Engle doesn't use brushes, it's just that they are only one of several techniques at her disposal.
I got this book after having read Creative Discoveries in Watermedia. So I understand why the title says 'Experimental Techniques for Achieving Realistic Effects'. Many of the same techniques from the Creative Discoveries book are used here as well. Everything from squirt bottles to pouring the paints and tipping the board to let the paint run where it will to textural techniqes for added interest. All the chapters introduce fun methods for paiting but I'm glad design (aka composition) has a chapter of its own. All the techniques in the world won't save a painting with a poor design (that's when you just crop it and make it a mixed media experimental painting!) :)
My favorite chapter is the last one. It discusses experimental techiques, mediums, methods, etc. This is the only watercolor book I've ever seen that mentions W&N's Aquapasto medium, a product I love for adding texture elements to some of my more experimental paintings. If you're an intermediate to advanced watercolorist looking for new ideas you'll find plenty of them here.

This is a must have book for the library of any watercolor artist! Nita Engle has been in the business for years and has the added advantage of being a very popular workshop teacher. If you can't attend her workshop, buy this book! I am a professional portrait artist whose husband is also an artist specializing in watercolors. Don't look for portraits in this book-look for some of the most amazing watercolor landscapes to be found in any book! This lady explains with no holds barred! Everything is detailed with a wonderful carefree banter. She is comfortable in her medium and her attitude. The many photos are outstanding! We were captivated by this book as there are too many wishy washy watercolor books out there with no real subject matter. We are quite critical of "how to" books that don't have any "how to" in them. If you are serious about watercolor and are ready for some major changes, then realize that this book won't sit on your shelf. You will be immediately rewarded with that artistic excitement that comes with the discovery of a new method or skill in which to energize your work! This is a gem and we speak from our experiences of years of making a living as artists!

excellant book for experienced watercolor painters

No matter what anybody says, watercolor painting is difficult. There are many instructional books out on the market that says they can help you become an excellant painter in ??? easy lessons. It just doesn't work that way. You can become a profecient painter by learning the basic techniques and,most important,paint, paint, and paint some more. Nita Engle has written a book that allows you to add some fun and spice to the time you paint,paint,and paint some more. Nita is a very respected teacher and painter and if you can't arrange to go to one of her workshops, buy this book! The effects Nita has evolved is amazing and she clearly explains how to get these effects. This book won't turn you into a wonderful painter in ?? easy lessons, but if you are a watercolor painter this is one book you'll use for years. Don't miss it!

A handy reference!

The Chinese interior was off-limits and virtually unknown to the West, but that's where the finest tea was grown - the richest oolongs, soochongs and pekoes. And the Emperor aimed to keep it that way.

Required Reading for Tea Lovers

All tea drinkers should read this book, which is the story of Robert Fortune. Don't know him? If you love tea, you should. You have Robert to thank for getting it into your hands. He went deep into China as a spy for the British empire, and sent back the live plants, seeds, and secrets that would introduce tea growing to India (then a part of the empire), reducing the prices and increasing the quality and quantity available to tea drinkers. Sarah's account of Robert Fortune's story is imaginative yet based in facts gleaned from historic documents. The story paints a clear picture of the danger Fortune faced in his service, a quest that paid off not only in access to tea, but in prestige for Fortune as well. The young botanist/naturalist was able to make a name for himself through his explorations. Right now this book is only available on Amazon UK, but I was able to get it for $25 or so shipped, which is about the same as you'd pay for a hardcover book anyway. Worth reading!

Industrial Espionage at the National Level

The whole idea is fun to read and think about. The story is reasonably engaging, and I recommend it for people who are interested in learning some of the effects of governments interfering in the imbalance in national trade; the biggest reason for Fortune's mission to steal tea from China surrounded the Chinese desire to divorce their citizenry from their addiction to Britain-imported opium.

A very entertaining and informative read, if Tea, Horticulture and the Empire Tax are of interest. It's a clear and straightforward read which flows well and is enjoyable, as well as being an engaging history book.

Alan Sangster is a chartered accountant (ICAS) with an undergraduate degree in Business Studies, a master's degree in Operational Research, and a PhD in accounting education. He has worked at Glasgow Caledonian University; the University of Strathclyde; Aberdeen University, The Queen's University, Belfast; the Open University; the Robert Gordon University; and Middlesex University. He has published over 50 articles and book chapters and has presented his research at over 100 conferences. He is professor emeritus at Middlesex University, London, and is an international visiting professor at the University of S(c)o Paulo, Brazil and at the University of Minho, Portugal. His research interests lie in accounting systems, accounting education, accounting practice, and accounting history, where his focus is upon accounting and business practice from 1200 to 1900 and, in particular, the life and work of Fra' Luca Pacioli. He has been co-author of Business Accounting and A-Level Accounting since 1994 and will be editor of Accounting Education: an international journal from 2012.
