Kenda Creasy Dean (PhD, Princeton Theological Seminary) teaches at Princeton Theological Seminary, where she is assistant professor of youth, church, and culture, and director of the School of Christian Education.

Chap Clark, PhD (Univ. of Denver), has more than 25 years of experience in youth and family ministry. He is Associate Provost for Regional Campuses and Special Projects and Professor of Youth, Family, and Culture at Fuller Theological Seminary. Chap's extensive books, articles, and videos focus primarily on relationships. Among his many books are Hurt and Hurt 2.0; Disconnected: Parenting Teens in a MySpace World (coauthored with his wife, Dee); and Deep Justice in a Broken World. Chap and Dee live in Gig Harbor, Washington. About the Author
Eihei Dogen Zenji was born in Japan on January 19, 1200. Considered to be the founding teacher of the Soto school of Zen, he was the author of many books and tracts, and his most important work, The Shobogenzo (Treasury of the Eye of the True Dharma), was collected into 95 fascicles regarding practice and enlightenment. He died in Kyoto on September 22, 1253.

This is a wonderful book for anyone practicing in Dogen's lineage, or interesting in understanding his writings. Genjokoan is a poetic, intellectual, and spiritual masterpiece, truly a gem of world spiritual literature. This short text is on par, in my opinion, with much longer classics like the Bhagavadgita, Ashtavakragita, Cloud of Unknowing, or Dhammapada. It is, however, like all of Dogen's writings, a very difficult read which requires repeated, contemplative study and a background in Buddhist thought. The commentaries in this text help to open Genjokoan for readers, but are themselves difficult texts which require repeated readings and contemplation. So caveat emptor.

That said, these commentaries are wonderful. The commentary by Nishiari Bokusan alone is worth buying the book for. Nishiari Bokusan is famous as the Zen monk who, when faced with death at the hands of some samurais, said, "Well, if you're going to kill me, I might as well have some saki." He then calmly and mindfully raised a cup to his lips and savoured it as if he was alone in the room. The samurais, disoriented and chagrined, simply left. Later Nishiari said, "I made no room for them in my world, so they couldn't find a foothold there."

The Ultimate Book for Understanding Religion

If you have never read this book and you like rational explanations for things, then you are in for a treat. This is THE book that explains the origins of religion in our ancient past. Along the way, you will learn a lot of science and odd, interesting facts about our sky and our historical past. It's well written, entertaining, not heavy on math or jargon, and it really ought to be required reading in all high schools.

In their estimation, there is a one- or two-percent chance within any human lifetime that a multi-megaton impact will take place on our tiny planet. If you have ever worried about disasters of Biblical proportions, this book is a classic.

Decent Science - Questionable Archeology

The first 6 chapters of this book (half the size of the book) consist of a qualitative introduction to comets, their possible origins, and their evolutionary paths within the solar system as well as their interactions with the inner planets of the solar system, especially Earth. The presentation is at the level of a typical Scientific American article and assumes a certain familiarity with common astronomical concepts such as eccentricity, perihelion, etc. I found the material quite interesting even though the prose was rather boring and at the organization, at times, confusing. These chapters contain many figures, plates, and references to more technical scientific literature - in case one wants to gain a deeper and more precise knowledge of this fascinating subject.

The chief purpose of these 6 chapters is to persuade the reader that comets of varying sizes and speeds have struck the Earth in its history at rather regular intervals. And further, that commentary collisions could have caused glaciation, mass extinctions. In this, they have been convincing, in my opinion.

Starting with chapter 7, the authors attempt to recover traces of Earth's encounter with comets preserved in human record. They mention Chinese & Korean sources that had documented observing comets in the sky but then proceed, in a not-very-convincing manner, to identify comets with ancient myths & legends of the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Hebrews and other ancient people.

The weakest chapter of the book, titled "1369 BC", is an attempt to account for the story of Exodus in Torah, the myth of Flood of the Sumerians, the destruction of Knossos and other such events by attributing them to Earth colliding with one (or multiple) comets of varying sizes. This is a long chapter and the authors spend a lot of time sifting through evidentiary material and selecting that which supports their thesis. I remain un-persuaded partly because I believe the material is too vast to be discussed in a single chapter, it needs an entirely separate book.

Overall, I learnt from this book where it came to science and to physical archeology (see plate 30) but not so much from the discussion of myths. And contrary to other reviewers, I do not believe that these authors have explained the origin of religion at all.

I had not paid much attention to the comets in my own studies of astronomy - having been fasicnated galactic & extra-galactic astronomy.

The cometary science part of this book is covered more in-depth and more extensively in the book: "Comets and the Origin of Life" by J. Wickaramasinghe et. al. (2010). The prerequisite for reading it profitably is a good undergraduate degree in Astronomy or Physics. An even more technical collection of articles that covers the same area of research may be found in the book: "Comets and the Origin and Evolution of Life (both first and second editions). There is also an expanded discussion of the role of catastrophes in evolution in the book: "Catastrophes and Evolution: Astronomical Foundations" by Clube (1990). Check them out.

Too basic

This is a very basic book about some VSDs used today. It has a lot of useful info, but not many details.

The Good:

Includes AC and DC Drive operation explanation

Written so it's very easy to understand.

Include waveforms at each step of the way through the circuits, which is helpful.

Explains how to test SCR power modules and Transistor power modules.

Basic DC and AC Motor operation reviews

The Bad:

There are about 25 pages of redundant text and illustrations. For example, it shows the same full-page schematic 6 times to point out the different sections.

Very little detail

The chapters are very short.

I don't see how it could cost $100 when it's worth about $10

I recommend a used copy of Industrial Electronics instead.

Don't even consider this book as an introductory guide.

Don't expect a wealth of technical information to be gleaned from this literary flop. The disappointing content is weak and aimed at readers who hope to excel at industrial controls and equipment, but this book will not suffice. I suggest more advanced material be sought for such a critical field as controls engineering. Nothing about this book impressed me.

How to Cope with our Feelings

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. First of all, I'd like to point out that this is a summary and analysis of Michael and Sarah Bennett's book and is not the original. If you're looking for a quick read of the book "F*ck Feelings" then this book is for you! This summary is divided into 10 key takeaways. The overall book discusses how to deal with different circumstances that enter our lives. I particular enjoyed takeaway 8 on parenting. It states: "Successful parenting can accommodate a certain degree of anxiety. Parents can try to reduce risks as much as possible without blaming themselves for the unavoidable, be cool-headed in a disagreement with a child, and be positive even when learning and parenting are difficult." As a new mom I am constantly worrying and stressing about my parenting. Even though this is only a summary, I felt that it gave me great advice on how I can work on controlling my feelings as a nervous parent.

Surprised me!

Another great review by Eureka! This companion captures the essence of the self help book "F*ck Feelings" and boils down the message into 10 key takeaways. Michael Bennett is a certified psychiatrist who has 30 years working experience in the field and teamed up with his daughter, the comedian and writer Sarah Bennett, to write "F*ck Feelings." This review by Eureka Books outlines their argument about objectivity in everything. Often as humans we let our feelings interfere with how we react with others. When we become more objective with issues like self-esteem, justice, and the impulse to help others, we are much more successful and adept at managing our problems.

A great point in this review is the 4th key takeaway, about being realistic in your desires to help. It is natural to want to help those with mental health issues, and we feel guilt when we cannot assist, but we should respect others and their struggles. We are not capable of fixing everything. When we load ourselves down with too many responsibilities and flatter ourselves with high expectations of recovery, we incapacitate the healing process for our friends and burden ourselves with unnecessary baggage.

I highly recommend this review. It broke down what I thought was a heartless self-help book into a logical and reasonable approach to human nature.

It's nice to find and read one that does not beat ...

The market is over flooded with self help books that promise you a new outlook on life if you follow their steps. It's nice to find and read one that does not beat around the bush and gives it to you straight and it is funny as well. This companion to the full book gives a great summary outlining the main points. It's like starting a good movie and not finishing it. You want to know how it ends. It has definitely convinced me into purchasing the full book.

I bought this book at the textile museum in Washington, D.C. many years ago and it fascinated me. The book was lovingly researched and the pictures are a treasure, along with the very interesting copy. I have actually had people ask me if I would be interested in parting with it. If you want to learn something deeper about Indian culture, buy this book and enjoy.
