Most recently, he collaborated with Jim Daly on ReFocus: Living a Life that Reflects God’s Heart. Chosen for Greatness is an inspirational book which every reader will enjoy.

As a parent of an adopted child, I looked forward to reading this book. I was not disappointed! Not only was the book an excellent read, I could not put it down until I came to the last page. I had no idea how many accomplished and famous people were adopted. This is clearly a book I want to keep for my child once she is old enough to read. Chosen for Greatness is an inspirational book that every reader will enjoy. It is a book I highly recommend for all readers.

An gem of history story telling

This is a genuinely remarkable book. Batura tells the adoptive stories of 16 famous people from today reaching back more than 2,000 from Babe Ruth, Leo Tolstoy, Steve Jobs, George W. Carver, Faith Hill to Jesus. He uses each of these stories to tell the reader a bit of the history of adoption in its long history. It's a brilliant device for telling the larger story of adoption.

In fact, the book is as valuable an explanation of important parts of history in general as it is about each person's own personal story. Batura is a very gifted researcher and story teller. I couldn't recommend the highly enough.

With an emphasis on co-ordination compounds, d- and f-block Chemistry aims to provide an introduction to the principles underlying the chemistry of the d- and f-block metals. It briefly describes the origins, uses and importance of these elements before considering the factors underlying their chemical properties.

The book describes aspects of structure, bonding, chemical thermodynamics and spectroscopy, which underpin studies of the chemistry of these elements. Examples are drawn from different parts of the d- or f-blocks to illustrate particular points and study questions allow students to practice the application of the principles they have learned. The text assumes a basic knowledge of symmetry, atomic structure, thermodynamics and electrode potentials. A familiarity with the qualitative use of the molecular orbital approach to bonding is also assumed, although an understanding of group theory is not essential.

The material is aimed at first and second year undergraduates, with a view to providing a basis for more advanced studies of the reactions, electronic structures, spectra and magnetism of transition metal complexes.

Useful book but buy Spielmann instead for a true classic

This is a quite good minor classic. Znosko-Borovsky discusses several themes, such as the standard bishop sacrifice on h7 and combinations against the king in the center. A great number of examples are to the point and I was delighted by the examples from Alekhine and Capa. There is clearly something of value for most of us here.
But, in some cases the connection between examples and examples and text are not very clear. There are also a some instances of "... and white/black wins" where the continuation is not too obvious. With my modest rating (ICC Standard c.2000, handle: johanh) I also found a few examples where white/black does in fact not have a clear win at all and may even be lost if the opponent had defended properly. On the other hand it is always a good excercise trying to prove an author wrong. No-one is perfect and that's the beauty of chess!
Spielmann's The Art of Sacrifice in Chess is better though - simpler language, complete games and a more dynamic approach (structure vs. the initiative, sacrifices that win material/ lead to mate vs. sacrifices to obtain the initiative or an attack without being able to calculate to the end, etc.). I found Spielmann's book much more charming, revealing and also modern even though it was printed several years before Z-B's book.

Good old time book on tactics

Really, all combinatiions involve some type of tactics. And, and combination in particular involves piece capturing. For the novice or mid-level chess player knowledge of all tactics at all phases of the game (books on traps cover tactics in the openings - important to know, books on checkmates cover yet another type of tactic) - all important to know. Though an old book, using descriptive chess notation (which is akward for many), this is still a worthwhile book to consider. The ideas are clearly pointed out and will be helpful for improving your game! Just because a book was written many years ago does not necessarily mean that it will not be very useful!

There are a lot of books on attacking chess. Start with this CLASSIC.

Znosko-Borovsky is a brilliant chess teacher; this and his How to Play the Chess Endings are his two best works. For the beginning tournament player, The Art of Chess Combination gives a wonderful, concise introduction to important motifs in attacking (and in some cases, defensive) play. Vukovic's Art of Attack in Chess is a good book, but after reading Znosko-Borovsky's shorter work felt it did not add that much extra.

The author does a tremendous job of introducing important tactical ideas, such "Geometry of the Chessboard," "The Knight's Star," and, what I consider to be the most important part of the book, the section on BxKRP+ sacrifices.

This is the most important work I have used to learn kingside attacking methods, and since reading it during my first year of playing tournament chess in 1996 have only supplemented it with some kingside attacking exercises, but not a tremendous amount. With this book, you learn what you need to do, and it sticks.

"The Art of Attack in Chess" is good for more applications of the Bxh7+ sacrifice, and studying preconditions, other than that, it did not overly impress me.

"Play Chess Combinations and Sacrifices" by David Levy, is a good mix of instruction/advice, and exercises for the intermediate player.

"The Art of the Middle Game" by Kotov and Keres. In general I don't really like this book, but for the price it is worth the purchase if only for Kotov's chapter on opposite-wing castling attacks. His treatment of the topic is outstanding. (Keres's chapters are OK also).

"Attacking Technique" by Crouch (I had to order it from Austrailia!) is a nice, short book.

"Attack Like Mikhail Tal" by Tal and Damsky is excellent, but challenging for non-innate attackers like myself. A more advanced work.

Finally, because you need to hone your "hacking" skills somewhat no matter what type of player you are, get tactics workbooks which SPECIFICALLY stress kingside attacks (that would be sacrifices and other combinations).

Back to "The Art of Chess Combination." Many people on Amazon complain about books written in Descriptive Notation. My response is: Get Over It! So many classics of chess literature are written in this language (which I actually like). I used to struggle with DN also, but now I can read it as easily as I can algebraic, and you should be able to also.

You can't always judge a book by its cover. People, however...

When it comes to the works of Anton LaVey, many book "reviews" seem to be done by people who didn't bother to read the book beyond the front cover, and/or just want to regurgitate some rant that has nothing to do with the book contents (e.g. bashing the author himself, defending Wicca and claiming ownership of the word "witch", babbling a Jack Chick-style Jesus rant, etc.). So instead, here's a review about the book, from somebody who's actually read the book.

For the moment, let's forget the book's title, the inverted pentagram on the front cover, and the Halloween coloring used in earlier editions, and get right to the question: what's the CONTENT of this book all about? If you're searching for literature on spell-casting, devil worship, cults, the supernatural, soul selling, or even descriptions of Satanism itself, then this isn't the book you're looking for.

What you will find however is researched (the bibliography is HUGE), refined, applicable techniques on the manipulation of people. In "The Satanic Bible", LaVey calls this art of manipulation "lesser magic"; this book is an expansion on that topic. There's nothing inherently "magick" or "supernatural" about it. One could say that a lot of it just comes down to psychology. But in my experience, it works! I found the contents invaluable in not only things like job interviews, but my own lucrative moonlighting career doing readings as a self-proclaimed psychic.

The book ultimately teaches how to read people, and how to use that information to your own advantage. LaVey mentions that self-proclaimed psychics don't actually have supernatural powers but rather do great people-reading whether they're consciously aware of it or not. This comes through picking up cues on body posture, clothing, speech, etc., and using that to make rather accurate guesses as to what their life is like. And this was published years before James Randi was debunking people like Uri Geller on TV. But while LaVey doesn't take the mystical approach, he doesn't dismiss it all as useless either.

As the title suggests, this is book was mostly written for women. The main focus is on how a woman can use the fact she's a woman to her advantage. And no, that doesn't always mean being sexually seductive. Though I've seen to many would-be warlocks who mistakenly dismiss this book as being strictly only for women. Being a man myself, I still find a lot of ways to apply the book techniques, especially the Synthesizer Clock.

In fact, being a man, this book practically scared me when I realized just how much power a woman CAN secretly wield. In a way, I'm glad the book has a title blasphemous enough to turn-off the average person, because if every woman used this book, they'd completely rule the world overnight (assuming they truly don't rule it already). But again, despite being for female-applicable, men too can get something out of the book.

Still Worth Reading

The book arrived quickly. The table of contents is rather provocative in terms of letting the reader know what they're in for when they are about to read the actual contents in the book. I liked the part about "The Myth of the White Witch" in that it is what I have felt about wicca for years. The section called "Bitchcraft" was intriguing, except that I felt he gave short shrift to gay women in the too-brief section called "The Lesbian Witch." I could say more, but other people who read this need to judge it for themselves.

LaVey is a genius!

I originally picked the book up because I'm wiccan. As I read further, I found that it had nothing to do with what I thought of as Witchcraft or Satanism. Rather, the book is an amazing work of art describing how any woman can use her feminine wiles to get any man she wants. I have used these tricks time and time again and have been consistently sucessful without fail. Of course, I'm the personification of the stereotypical sexy witch, with long blonde hair and a curvy body. But LaVey says that these tricks will work for anyone and everyone, and, well, LaVey being such a genius and all, I tend to believe him. The art of fascination is described by LaVey with such intelligence and knowledge! LaVey also includes what he calls his "personality synthesizer". There is a whole chapter of the book entirely devoted to explaining how it works, and anyone can understand it and use it in order to control and manipulate people. Not that I advocate this, but it seems that all people fall into a certain spot on the synthesizer chart, and in order to make the person become completely enthralled with you, all you have to do is act exactly like the person, or act like their complete opposite. It makes sense- People are attracted to what is like them, and they are also attracted to others who posess what they don't have. As I said, this book, in my opinion, has nothing to do with Satanism or Witchcraft. I think a more appropriate title would be "How To Get Any Man You Want" . Never in my life have I found a more useful book, and I don't think I ever will. The Satanic Witch shows women how to control men while letting them THINK that they have the upper hand. It shows us how to utilize all of the tricks that women used for centuries- tricks that have been lost or forgotten about since that dreadful period, the sixties, when women wanted to be more like men. Well, I guess that for the unattractive women who didn't know how to use their feminity to their advantage, the sixties was a period of great importance and was necessary to ensure their livelihood. For us pretty girls, however, it has made life all the more difficult. We must re-discover our feminity and use the fact that we are different from men to our advantage. And if LaVey says that these techniques will work for even the ugly girls, then, let me tell you, this is the book to get! Also, the introduction, written by LaVey's daughter, Zeena, is a work of art in and of itself and deserves its own accolade. Zeena describes with such eloquent intelligence how the sixties were the downfall of all women and why the techniques in this book are so very important. If you're looking for a book about spellcasting or necromancy, then keep on looking, because you won't find that kind of information here. But if you've ever, ever wanted a man and were not able to get him, then this book is, and I'm not exaggerating, a NECESSITY! My personal opinion- Even if you never buy another book again in your life, BUY THIS BOOK! You'll be so glad you did.

Claiming one of these females will not be an easy feat considering there are three other dragon tribes vying for the opportunity.
How the hell is he supposed to do all of this when he doesn’t want to come within a mile of one of these unsavory creatures?

frustrated

Ugh ... I'm a little over half-way through the book and I'm ready to reach in and punch the heroine in the throat. She's sooooo ridiculous. She harps constantly on not only getting raped, but on how his big "man parts" will tear her up. Even after she's been shown and proven that no rapes occur, even though she's been shown and proven that other human women are very happy with their dragon shifters, in and out of bed, she still insists that SHE will be raped and that the others aren't smart enough to know that they are being raped too. Apparently the other grown women are incapable of making their own decisions and Julie is the only one with a brain ... in Julie's opinion. Of course, all of this is going through her head at the same time that she's turned on by the guy and going on about how hot and sexy he is and that she should just go ahead and jump his bones.

So poor Coal has to put up with this bi-polar ditz, I couldn't feel sorrier for him! I'm really hoping the 2nd half of the book redeems itself, Julie starts taking meds and Coal finally gets off the merry-go-round!

***UPDATE***

I finished the book and unfortunately, Julie never really redeemed herself. Coal was great, I'd love a man like that in my life. He made some mistakes but he owned them and he changed and he didn't balk at doing either. He also didn't wallow in the past the way that Julie does. She lets her past color EVERYTHING about her present and her future and it gets really old fast.

It's not a bad story and the premise is quite good actually, it's just a sucky heroine.

Could Have Been Great. Failed.

This book had potential, but it tanked.
Hard.
First of all, the cheesily named dragon shifters kidnap women. They're led to fear that they will be raped, then ALL OF A SUDDEN most of the women are happily sleeping with the dragon shifters that beat the crap out of each other for the women. It moved far too fast with no explanation for anything. There should have been so much more fight in these women.
The only one with reservations was the female protagonist. Even then, she cried fear of rape until she was begging for sex.
The whole book was poorly written and the plot devices were non-existent. Plot devices were eschewed in favor of revealing most things through dialogue.

at first i really did not like Coal. his arrogant attitude grated on my nerves. i did feel bad for Scarlet until she was so mean to the other women. she should have been mad at Blaze. what happened to the other women? Coal proved himself. He turned out to be perfect for julie. julie was slightly annoying in her resistance but she finally came around. i really like Flame. Blaze is hiding something. great read.
