By 1900 the British had undertaken various types of urban planning in their colonial territories, but the early twentieth century brought new ideas and the birth of the modern planning movement. In India these new planning ideas inspired several specialized reports after 1900, most of which drew explicitly on British, or occasionally German, ideas. The most complete of these studies was the Richards Report on Calcutta, prepared for the Calcutta Improvement Trust and published in 1914.

Its major concerns included the building and widening of roads, slum clearance and improvement, legislation, and suburban planning. As background, it included written and visual documentation of living conditions, through charts, photographs, and maps. Richards emphasized that conditions in Calcutta differed greatly from those in urban Britain, and made some allowance in that regard. In general, however, his report exemplifies the attempt by British planners, along with Indian elites, to impose their vision on colonial cities.

Richards’ report was well-received by leading British planners of the day. A notice in Garden Cities and Town Planning claimed that it was "the most complete report on town conditions and possibilities which has yet been issued". While the immediate impact of the report in Calcutta is moot - Richards was highly critical of the past practices of local officials, and his views were unpopular with his superiors - the Richards Reports remains a crucial insight into both the development of modern town planning and the colonial period in India.

Classic

The more of these "old school" books on advertising and sales I read the more I chuckle. As Solomon says, "There is nothing new under the sun." These "new school gurus" are doing nothing more than regurgitating these classics as their own ideas. Seems to me better reading comes from the early to mid 1900s. The writing is much more sincere and candid.

All that said, I liked reading this book. A lot of good principles and true stories packed in a half a day read. This is the best book on sales I have ever read. Solid non-gimmicky sales tactics that can be applied with success today. An additional bonus of some Dale Carnegie thrown in the mix was a pleasant surprise.

If you are starting out or struggling in sales read this book.

Great book for practical sales techniques especially for insurance salesmen. It's not a boring text book full of tricks nor is it some fictitious pile of crap. Bettger went through a lot, took so many hits to his ego, then finally became numb to rejections and set backs- focusing on the positives in his life which granted him phenomenal success. He also has some interesting encounters with some of the world's greatest. Yes, this normal guy, so focused and determined earned the respect of some of the world's elite. Read on. You'll enjoy.

I have read many books on selling and this one has some great information in it

I purchased this book on recommendation from a company I am currently working for. It as the book of the month for us. I have read many books on selling and this one has some great information in it. The most important point was that you need to be organized and write down your actions. If you don't do the action for your sales business, like making calls, visiting customers and following up, you are not going to be making money in sales! Short read, but very informative, I would suggest buying and reading.

Very funny and sweet romance novella

When Gretchen decides not to join her family for the Christmas holidays, she resigns herself to spending them alone in her apartment. Then she runs in to the HLG (Hot Lawyer Guy) who lives in her building, a guy she’s had a crush on for quite some time. Turns out, he’s not only smoking hot, but super nice as well. Seems he’s going to be spending the holidays alone too. Perhaps this Christmas won’t be so bad after all.

This is a hilarious and also very sweet Christmas romance novella. I laughed out loud at some of the antics. They hit very close to home. The characters are wonderful and quite lovable. This is actually a story I will want to read again. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

A high-quality feel-good story

I was lucky enough to get an advanced reader copy of this novella by Mary Whitney. I went through it in one sitting, giving you an indication on how much I enjoyed it. Her characters are well-developed and we grow attached to them. You will get attached to Gretchen and all her insecurities, and to Sean, who is such a gret complement to her personnality.

Until January can be qualified as one of those "feel-good" stories, yet it is well-constructed and written with carefully chose words and lots of spirit.

Mary has a way with words and with this novella, she gives us this little piece of reading, perfect for the Holiday Season.

Heuvelmans wrote about cryptozoology as if each cryptid were simply a living, breathing animal. He did so using his extensive knowledge of natural sciences, looking into necessary matters such as habitat, diet, geographical distribution, a comparison to other species or an attempt to find its ecological niche, as well as careful descriptions. About the Author
Amy Werbel currently serves as an Associate Professor of the History of Art at the State University of New York - Fashion Institute of Technology. From 1994 to 2013, she was Professor of Art History and American Studies at Saint Michael’s College. Professor Werbel is the the author of numerous works on the subject of American visual culture, sexuality, and censorship including: Thomas Eakins: Art, Medicine, and Sexuality in Nineteenth-Century Philadelphia (Yale University Press, 2007). Professor Werbel is a graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges (A.B. ’86) and Yale University (PhD ’96), and the recipient of fellowships and grants from numerous institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. She served as a Fulbright Scholar for 2011-2012 at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in Guangzhou, China. She is the mother of two sons, ages 19 and 15, and lives in Brooklyn with her husband and fellow writer, Frederick Lane.

Captures the hearts & minds of today's Chinese students

As a teacher in Chinese Universities since 2008, I found Ms. Werbel's observations equally grounded in her student's own words and her own incisive observations. This book is a part of an emerging China literature that is a bit more mature than the initial exotic, instant and superficial experts of earlier years. She dives into her students' thoughtful essays - many in a kind of Chinglish - and yet more than understandable and selects thoughtful morsels for her readers to taste, digest, and savor. In this way, I consider her a bridge builder - one who will help two of the world's civilization understand each other better.

Ms. Werbel's passion for teaching is stunning and her love of seeing her students's eyes light up is palpable in her writing. If you ever thought of a year in China teaching in a University, "Lessons from China" is your primer on how to do it!

She is an adventurer & her detailed descriptions of several side trips and local immersion are delightful. Buy this book - recommend it to others!

Thinking across borders

"Lessons from China" is an engaging, thoughtful, and stimulating account of Amy Werbel's year as a Fulbright Scholar teaching at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, in Guangzou China. In 2011-2012 the author taught courses on "Culture in the United States from the Civil War to World War I" and "America in the 1960s" to graduate students at GDUFS; traveled throughout China as a guest lecturer; mentored and befriended several graduate students; learned the ins and outs of negotiating ethnic and linguistic divisions and barriers within China; and absorbed much else about contemporary China's cultural, intellectual, and political environment that she reports in her book.
American readers will find much here to engage their minds, both in Werbel's account of her teaching and in her accounts--supported with long unedited quotations from student homework and examination papers--of Chinese students' reception and perception of American history and culture. Werbel and her students discussed topics such as race relations, the counterculture of the 1960s, censorship, the dynamics of reform, and the Vietnam War. She introduced them to the practice and skills of dialogue, critical thinking, and the use of primary sources, which in turn raises important questions about the nature and future of higher education in both China and America.
Reading this account of a year of teaching and learning leaves an American reader with a lot to ponder: our understanding and assessment of our own history and institutions, how others perceive them, and the role of the liberal arts and critical thinking in our own system of higher education.

The Real China Lessons

Excellent read and insight into today's China. Having lived half my time in Shenzhen, China (City next to Guangzhou) over the last 12 years, I could relate and found her book thoroughly enjoyable. I truely appreciated Amy Werbel's warmth, compassion, and humorous portraits of her experiences teaching in China. Her insight into the goals, ambitions, and fears of her students are real. The pressure on the students from peers, schools, and parents to succeed are fact. Her personal trials and tribulations adapting to Chinese culture are similar to others connecting with the 'China experience'. This is a 'must read' for those interested in China and the Chinese.
Amazing how fast China is growing. For example, in the few years gone by since she taught in Guangzhou, the 'one child' policy is giving way to 'two children' with Xi Jiping's government policies. The generation that Professor Werbel taught will soon become the new China. I like what I read. I like what Professor Werbel added to the lives of her students. I have hope for China's future. You, your children, your parents, and your husband have given wonderful insight to Chinese students into the real America and Americans---who could ask for more to communicate the human experiences between people of different cultures. Yeah Amy!

“Yoga at Home” by Linda Sparrowe is to me a book of stunning yoga poetry; with each contributor’s chapter as a verse in an epic poem. The vibrant photos of over fifty yogis and yoginis, personal stories and insight, as well as ideas for home practice, weave and dance as they blend into a book of whole yoga.
The diversity of philosophy, practice, age and ability featured in Linda’s book, help me, a newly certified yoga teacher in rural Colorado, feel part of a larger welcoming yoga community. From creating a space for personal practice to using props and tools as well as the practices and sequences, “Yoga at Home” is a never-ending source of practical and spiritual ideas and insights for my personal practice and for teaching my students.
Each time I open the book, I step into the radiant world of yoga, which fills my soul with deep delight. “Yoga at Home” has become my personal encyclopedia of all things yoga. If I had to choose only one book from my shelf full of yoga books, “Yoga at Home” would jump into my hands.

Inspirational and captivating!

Once I began reading Yoga At Home, by Linda Sparrowe, I felt a wave of relief and a burst of inspiration. For many years I have been interested in yoga but felt self-conscious attending a class(being a newbie), rarely made time for myself, and the thought of doing yoga at home left me feeling overwhelmed, not knowing where to begin. I enjoyed reading that pretty much any area can be 'your yoga space'. It can be a room totally devoted to yoga or depending on your space, it can be small area in a multi-purpose room - there is no right or wrong place as long as you are comfortable there. I even smiled as I read the chapter from Bas Van Koll who has a goal of 30 minutes of yoga each morning, even though it is far from tranquil as his kids climb on him he makes it work - to me, that signifies that many of us cannot have that alone time but we can still benefit greatly from meditation and yoga. Linda captured an array of opinions and ideas that left me yearning to learn even more. I have read through most of the book and find it hard to put it down. It is captivating, motivational and the photos help capture attention.

Be inspired and learn how to go deeply within in your home practice.

Incredible book, contains a true behind the scenes view of some of the west's most accomplished yogis. This book rightly draws attention to the heart of the Yoga described in the Hatha Yoga Pradipika which is the home practice. The practices taught in studios across the US is a structure that is made compatible with the economics of yoga studios, which are not particularly lucrative, but fit in to the "Group Fitness" model of aerobics, Zumba and the like.
