a grammar for those whose don't like grammars

I've owned this book for a few years now, and frankly I can't
say enough good about it. I'm not one who likes to study
things like "adjectival predicates", and I can assure you the
book is not like that. While there are technical terms in there,
the moment one starts reading the description, it's crystal
clear what is meant. Everything is defined in a way that
non-grammarians can understand.
I especially like the use of pinyin, English, and Chinese
characters for virtually every example in the book, and there
are many (along with exercises). A number of times I've read the
English part of some example and thought "so that's how to
say that in Chinese".
If I had to nit-pick, the only thing I didn't like about the
book was that the pinyin is in bold font, while the Chinese
characters are not. I'm trying to read/write characters, but
my Western eyes are always pulled to the bold pinyin font.
Although I own several Chinese grammars, mostly published
in China, this volume and its companion (Basic Chinese) are the
ones I always turn to first.

The best series of Chinese grammars.

I have used and enjoyed this series of grammars for years now. They have clear and concise explanations and thought provoking commentary. A great feature is that both figurative and literal translations are provided, really giving an insight into Chinese grammar patterns. Another endorsement is the number of good Chinese students that Leeds University (the author's school) produces. I have met a number in China and they are generally impressive. Highly recommended.

Dr. Yip, king of Chinese grammar

I must start off by admitting that the author of this book is one of my teachers (at Leeds University) and he is a very lovely and enthusiastic man. But this isn't just a personal endorsement of Dr.Yip: this book is really very useful indeed. Whether you work through the chapters systematically (which I have done when revising for exams) or just dip into random chapters to clear up grammar problems, you'll find this book indispensable. I think the examples are relevant, and the explanations both clear and comprehensible (unlike other Chinese grammars I could mention - any of the Beijing University Press ones are shockingly bad). This book is tops - it's getting me through my Chinese degree almost painlessly!

Dr. Hassed gets it!

This book has it all! I am a masters student at Columbia University studying Neuroscience and Education. My thesis is on the neuroscience of mindfulness and I have read over 20 books touting mindfulness research in an educational setting - So many of them are for beginners seem to be written for an ideal classroom that does not exist (did I mention that I'm an 8th grade Special Education teacher in Brooklyn?) This book is full of the newest research and applications for the classroom. It hits on interdisciplinary levels, such as social emotional learning, and the fixed/growth mindset. This book would be great to give anyone you know who has developed learned helplessness or chronic stress over time - regardless of whether they are an educator or student. Aside from this book, I also recommend Daniel Rechtschaffen's book, The Way of Mindful Education, which has great lesson plans for students of all ages (and all demographics) in the classroom.

Adequate at best; but has serious flaws

Note that this review is for the 11th edition (2011). I have not looked at any of the previous editions and, therefore, cannot comment on them. However, judging from what the preface says about what is new to this edition, much of what I have to say here will likely apply to other editions as well.

I started reading this book with high hopes. I was looking for a text that provided a good overview of the various ideological positions that people hold, both in the United States and around the world, discussing the basic tenets and goals of each ideology, its history and major figures, its preferred methods for achieving its political objectives (e.g. top-down reform, grassroots activism, violent revolution, terrorism, separatism), its political organization (e.g. into parties, interest groups, movements, etc.), and what distinguishes it from other political viewpoints. As a bonus, I would really have liked some discussion of why people hold different ideological views: why some people are drawn to socialism, others to liberalism, others to fascism, etc. But a good overview of the world's many ideologies would have sufficed, even without an exploration of the motivations that drive people into one ideological camp or another. Although I haven't (thus far) taught any courses specifically on ideology, I do discuss ideology in some of my other political science courses; and, so, I was looking for a text I could recommend to my students, and that I could draw on when preparing lectures on the subject. I was hoping that this would be the text I was looking for. Unfortunately, it isn't.

Like I said, I started reading this book with high hopes. As I thumbed through it before I began reading, it looked as if it would be just what I was wanting. It had chapters on the spectrum of political attitudes, on nationalism, on liberalism (including a discussion of conservatism), on anarchism, on socialism, on fascism and Nazism, on ideologies in the developing world (including Islamism), and even a chapter on feminism and environmentalism. And there is some good information to be found in these chapters. The author does a pretty good job of briefly summarizing the history of each of these ideologies, identifying the most important foundational figures in each, and describing the political and economic views represented by each ideology. But, unfortunately, I found that the book failed to live up to my high hopes for a number of different reasons.

Without going into too much detail, let me briefly list what I believe to be the major shortcomings of this book (in no particular order):

* It's a bit too superficial in its coverage of the various ideologies. While it does provide some good, basic information, it only scratches the surface. Wikipedia goes into more depth about some of the topics covered in this book. This level of detail may be suitable for high school students; but not for university undergrads.

* The text covers only the major global ideologies and their most prominent variants. It does not even attempt to discuss the multitude of minor variants and offshoots of each of these ideologies.

* The author doesn't stick to the subject. There are lengthy digressions about topics that are only tangentially related to ideology, such as the structural differences between the American and the British systems of government, the problem of population growth in the developing world, and recent political changes in China and Cuba (which appear to be motivated by pragmatic concerns rather than by ideology, per se).

* The author tries too hard to keep up with current events. If this were a textbook on contemporary political issues, timeliness would be of the essence. But it's not. It's a textbook on ideologies - a subject that calls for a certain measure of perspective. In order to understand what a particular political movement stands for, you have to give it time to develop; and you have to step back and look at it from some distance. If you're too close to something, your view of it becomes distorted: relatively minor features loom large in your field of view, while major features can blend into the background. While I can sympathize with the author's desire to discuss, for example, the ideology behind the Tea Party movement, it's simply too early to judge what it's all about, apart from an expression of frustration at the direction the country has taken over the past few years. It would have been better not to mention the Tea Party at all than to try to encapsulate its essence in just a few sentences scattered throughout the text. Likewise, it would have been better not to mention the "Great Recession" at all than to simply bring it up in passing just to note that it's too early to tell what its long-term ideological impact will be. I got the distinct impression that the author included these (and other) passing references to current events just to give him an excuse to put out a new edition of his textbook.

* There is very little discussion of Islamism. Although Islamism may not be in the same league with major global ideologies such as liberalism and socialism, it is an important ideology, nonetheless, and deserves more coverage than the (approximately) three pages it gets in this text.

* The author adopts the overly-simplistic, one-dimensional political spectrum, which places radicals and liberals on the "left" and conservatives and reactionaries on the "right", based solely on their attitudes toward change. While I would expect any text on ideology to discuss this traditional view of the political spectrum, I would hope that it would be challenged as inadequate, and that alternative political typologies would be explored. This text simply embraces the traditional view and doesn't bother to explore any alternatives.

* The text is riddled with glaring spelling, grammatical, and stylistic errors. This might be excusable in a first edition; but these errors should have been caught and corrected by the 11th edition.

* The author is just too opinionated for a textbook -- especially a textbook whose purpose is to discuss how political views can differ. He doesn't shy away from using value-laden terms when describing various ideologies and individuals (at one point even referring to a couple of popular pundits as "gasbags"); and he frequently asserts things as fact that are still the subject of intense political debate. While I suspect that I would agree with many of the author's political views, I feel that an educator's job is to teach, not to preach, and that a textbook ought to inform rather than opine. By asserting one's own political viewpoints in the classroom, a teacher (or textbook writer) risks alienating students who disagree with those viewpoints; and, once you've alienated a student, he or she will stubbornly reject everything you have to say from that point on. If you want to teach, you need to stick to the facts, and leave the op ed for your blog.

These aren't the only complaints I have with this textbook; but my other complaints are relatively minor compared to these. I don't want to leave the impression that this book is worthless. Like I said above, there is some good information here. Some students might benefit from it, especially if all they wanted was a very simple, cursory overview of the major ideologies of the world. EDITED (FALL 2012) TO ADD: If you're looking for another ideology textbook to use instead of this one by Baradat, I would have to recommend Andrew Heywood's "Political Ideologies: An Introduction" 5th edition (2012), which I've also reviewed for Amazon. It's not perfect; but it's the best ideology textbook I've come across thus far.

An excellent tool for all those interested in politics

I actually had the pleasure of taking his political science course at the local college, and was amazed about how interesting he made the material, so I picked up his book. It is amazing compared to what we were forced to use in class! There are so many myths floating around thanks to our "wonderful" media, who say we're getting fair information when they're really just owned by a giant corporation and have to push their views. I sold back the course textbook and bought this instead, and read this over and over since it relates so well to our times. Since it is a textbook, there isn't the "fluff" associated with some other political books (hello Mr. Franken) and it actually educates the reader, not just talking at him/her. I recommend this for all poly sci students regardless of level, and I only hope I have the opportunity to take another of his classes.

Still the must-have book for anyone who votes

This has to be the one college textbook (the 7th edition, really) that I read over and over again. The logic in how Baradat approaches the origin of political thought and brings it into the present balances itself with an easy-to-read engaging prose. It gives a survey of the great thinkers all over the spectrum, including anarchists, conservatives, liberals, radicals, communists, socialists, and fascists.
In today's society, I have found that most people are misinformed about the meaning of conservatism and liberalism because they get their concepts through the media. This book aggressively dispels all the myths fabricated by the AM radio conservatives and the politically-correct totalitarians.

Amazing Girl did a swan dive into the darkness of that alley, and flew down to head level as she streaked at breakneck speed towards those two thugs. She was coming up from their left, with her left fist forward and the right pulled back. Just as she reached them, she cried out.

Their heads whipped around, looks of surprises warming her heart. Amazing Girl pounded her right fist into the first thug’s face. It was Trevor, and he went down as her fist continued straight into Dave’s face.

“Ouch, bet that hurt,” she said, immediately pulling up and then slowly dropping to stand between the two down thugs. She rubbed her right arm from wrist to shoulder. It was quite a jolt for her, as well. “Sleep tight, morons.”

Thankfully, none of the balloons filled with chloroform burst. Three of the balloons had rolled away, and Trevor still held onto one. Amazing Girl took the balloon from him, found the other three, and deposited them in a dumpster, before going to the door into the club.

The door was locked. She scowled, and then checked the two thugs’ pockets. They had lots of keys, but none of them opened that door. After angrily throwing their keys down the alley, Amazing Girl grabbed the door knob and ripped the door open.

To say it was loud was an understatement.

“It’s a heroine!” someone cried inside.

Amazing Girl charged into the dark hallway. Three men blocked her way. It was too dark to see if any of them were the thugs that captured the two super heroines.

“Get her!”

“Get this,” she growled, and kicked the first man in the face. He fell back into the second, that she thrust kicked in the face over the unconscious man falling into him. “Two down, and one ass-wipe to go!”

The pigtailed vigilante leapt over them and traded punches with the third man. He was fast and strong, and all they did was manage to block or duck under each other’s punches. Knowing she didn’t have much time, Amazing Girl flew up and over him. At the same time, she brought her knee brutally up into his face. His grunt of pain, followed by his collapse, made her smile. Okay, it was a cruel little smile.

Psychologist and syndicated columnist Rosemond ( Parent Power! ) asserts that rearing children can be "relatively easy and enjoyable" if parents follow his advice: take care of your marriage first, then the kids; expect children to obey and they will; make children accept responsibility for their behavior and for household chores; say no to your child and you will build character; restrict toys--too many will limit a youngster's imagination; and keep television-viewing to a minimum or youths will become passive and won't develop an interest in reading. Each chapter includes questions from parents, with Rosemond's replies. He is dogmatic ("I don't believe there's any justification for letting a preschool child watch any television at all"), prone to psychobabble ("give yourself permission to be creatively selfish") and excessively cute (instead of using the word "no" he writes about "Vitamin N"). Nonetheless, the book succeeds in presenting fresh, reasonable strategies that should help parents to resolve family conflicts and raise well-adjusted children.

Another book Moms and Dads need!

My parents are devoted fans of John Rosemond's columns ~~ and every other week, I'll get the column from them in the mail. Rosemond offers practical advice to parents like my husband and me. Bewildered by all the parenting advice out there, there are just some days we get so overwhelmed on whether we're raising our sons right or not. This book is for you if you are in the same boat as we are.

This book just offers advice from Rosemond as he parents his children with his wife. This is practical advice and full of common sense. Though our boys are just turning three, this book will be a huge help for us over the years. We're gleaning ideas from this book now, especially on the advice of making our marriage our top priority. A happy marriage makes for a happy family.

Each chapter also comes with real-to-life questions from other parents and Rosemond answers each one of them. These are situations that you may or may not find yourself in but you can relate to them. The answers are not mean or cruel ~~ just practical. Rosemond also stresses teaching kids responsibility and working for things that they feel are important to them. He also stresses on the importance of making time for your marriage, family time and so on.

This is a practical guide that I heartily recommend for all parents ~~ no matter how old your children are. This is another book that I plan to give to my children and nieces and nephews when they start raising their own families.

My husband and I are both doctors, and every day we see unruly, disrespectful children who completely manipulate their parents. (Imagine bargaining with a two-year-old over whether she will receive her shots or not!) We also see a lot of frustrated, frazzled, and confused parents who wonder how, despite loving their children and doing everything for them, they ended up with such monsters! This book took everything we were thinking and summarized it into a useful, concise guide to child rearing. I strongly recommend it for anyone who actually wants well behaved, secure, happy children who don't rule the roost.
