I spent new Year's Day with Norm. No not really. He's in India and I am on my sofa dreaming of my next trip while reading Travel with Norm.The book is chock full of useful travel tips some of which a seasoned traveler would know, other tips just a gentle reminder for foreign travelers on how to get the most bang for your buck and time. The author knows of what he writes and genuinely wants to share the info and make all of our trips a little bit better and easier. Most valuable lesson he imparts in this and all his books is don't over plan your travels. It's often the unexpected that becomes the most memorable.
It's well worth the $4.99 I spent. If the book gives you one insight to make your next vacation better, it's well worth it.

About the Author

Avnish Patel - After completing his undergraduate studies at the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley, Avnish went to work at Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein Investment Bank. Prior to graduation and full-time employment as Dresdner, he completed a Goldman Sachs Sales & Trading summer internship in Hong Kong. Avnish’s experience was mainly focused on fixed income currency commodities (FICC). After working in investment banking for a year at Dresdner, he spent 2 years at Credit Suisse Investment Banking before moving on to 3 ½ years at Audax Private Equity in Boston. Before heading off to Columbia Business School, from where he recently graduated, he spent a year exploring different entrepreneurial ventures.

Ketty Rodríguez nació en Caracas, Venezuela a finales de la década de los 60. Rodríguez, estudió Comunicación Social en la Universidad Católica Andrés Bello y trabajó en los periódicos Últimas Noticias y en el extinto, Diario de Caracas. En el 2000, fue contratada por el periódico El Nuevo Herald de Miami, para trabajar como reportera y escribir noticias sobre inmigración y el sistema educativo del condado Miami-Dade. En el 2009, salió del diario por la crisis económica que sacudió a los medios impresos en Estados Unidos, y comenzó su carrera de escritora. Su primer libro Hijas del Abuso, fue publicado en Noviembre del 2011 en Amazon. Caracas, el Valle del Miedo sale publicada en Abril del 2014, en Amazon.com, y es la versión modificada de Fronteras del Miedo, que salió por primera vez, en Diciembre del 2012.

Mi escape literario solía ser ciencia ficción estilo Star Trek o una variedad de aventureros del espacio. Gradualmente cambie al estilo de detectives, y luego a las historias de espionaje. Caracas, El Valle del Miedo cae básicamente dentro de la categoría de espionaje, y además satisfice muy bien, mi definición de lo que considero una buena historia.

Pero es más que eso, mis vecinos y muchos de mis colegas son venezolanos, y yo debo saber más sobre su país y la causa de sus angustias; y Caracas, El Valle del Miedo verifica esto también. Después de leerlo, tengo una mejor noción de cómo mis vecinos ven el problema que su país está enfrentando.

Espero la continuación de esta historia en un 2do libro.

My escape literature used to be science fiction of the Star Trek/space cowboys variety. Gradually, I switched to detective and then to spy stories. Caracas, El Valle de Miedo falls basically within the spy story tradition and fully fits my definition of a good story.

But it's more than that. My neighbors and many of my colleagues are Venezuelan. I should know more about their country and the cause of their anguish. Caracas, El Valle del Miedo fits the bill there too. After reading it, I have a much better notion of how my neighbors see the problems the country is facing.

I look forward to a sequel.

Nunca habia visto una segunda version de un libro muchisimo mas interesante que la primera como sucede en esta novela! Los cambios que se han hecho en los tiempos de narracion, el ordenamiento de la trama y lo que dicen los personajes sobre la situacion y el futuro de Venezuela tambien han sido magnificamente revisados, con un resultado que sorprendera..
En conclusion, este es un libro distinto que te hace leerlo tan vertiginosamente como su trama para apoderarte de la intriga que cuenta. Al final, llegas a comprender la vision de la autora sobre Venezuela, muy cercana a lo que se vivie actualmente en este pais. No digo mas. Leanlo y veran que no perdieron su tiempo, sino que al contrario, lo enriquecieron!

Admiral Sir Reginald Hugh Spencer Bacon (1863 –1947) was an officer in the Royal Navy noted for his technical abilities. He was described by the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jacky Fisher, as the man "acknowledged to be the cleverest officer in the Navy".

In 1897 he served as a member of the British punitive expedition to Benin, and on his return from active service wrote the book Benin, the City of Blood (1897), describing the campaign.

The Benin Expedition of 1897 was a punitive expedition by a United Kingdom force of 1,200 under Admiral Sir Harry Rawson in response to the defeat of a previous British-led invasion force under Acting Consul General James Philips (which had left all but two men dead).

Bacon has made his story brief, and at the same time has avoided baldness. Almost at once the reader is put in possession of the facts, drawn irresistibly into line with the expedition, and compelled to follow it through all its hardships and dangers. Scarcely ever has such a complement of men been got together from so great a distance and furnished so completely in so short a time. Nor has a British force had such a task set them as the march along the bush-path to Ologo.

The author gives the picture in a few words: “Imagine a country 25¢ a square miles, one mass of forest, without one break, except a small clearing here or there for a village and its compound. Imagine this forest stocked with trees: some 200 feet high, with a dense foliage overhead, and interspersed between these monster products of vegetable growth smaller trees to fill up the gaps. Imagine between all these trees an undergrowth of rubber shrubs, palms, and creepers, so thick that the eye could never penetrate more than twenty yards, and often not even ten. Imagine the fact that you might even walk for an hour without seeing the sun overhead, and only at times get a glimmer of a sunbeam across the path, and you have an elementary conception of the bush country of Benin.” The path through all this was just broad enough for one man to walk in comfort, able only to touch the bush each side with outstretched arms. All was grand overhead, while from the ground came the rank smell of decaying vegetable matter, charged with the germs of malaria. Fighting under such circumstances gives overwhelming advantages to the enemy, but nevertheless Benin was finally taken with but little loss of life.

It is difficult in a short space to give any idea of the striking way Commander Bacon brings the horrors and trials of the campaign vividly before the reader; or to give even a vague notion of the loathsome practice of Ju-Ju, or the terrible picture of slaughter and sacrifice Benin presented when it was at last reached. This books should be read not only by those who care for adventure, but also by those who care for history. England has spilt much blood in the doing of unpleasant yet necessary deeds with varying degrees of success; but it is for the reader to determine whether "purging of this 'pest-house,' this decomposing ghastly cesspool, in so summary a fashion" was justified or merely misguided imperialism.

fun prepping guide for the zombie apocalypse

I really enjoyed reading ‘How to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse.’ It was humorous, and is a great book for anyone interested in prepping or who likes zombies.

Ben Jackson offers fun tips and advice to help you make the best of the worst of times. He also goes into details about the types of zombies and the various weapons you can use to kill them. No matter if you want to go it alone or form a group, the tactics described in this book have you covered.

About the Author

The late Oded Bar-Or, MD, was a professor of pediatrics and founder and director of the Children's Exercise and Nutrition Centre at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. He had over 35 years of experience conducting research focused on the effects of physical activity and inactivity on the health, well-being, and physical performance of healthy children and those with chronic diseases. He received his MD degree from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel.

Dr. Bar-Or served as president of the Canadian Association of Sports Sciences, president of the International Council for Physical Fitness Research, and vice president of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He also chaired the Foundation for Active Healthy Kids.

A widely published author, he earned the ACSM's Citation Award in 1997 and the North American Society for Pediatric Medicine's Honor Award in 1998. In 2000, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Blaise Pascal in France.

Thomas Rowland, MD, is director of pediatric cardiology at the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he established an exercise-testing laboratory. He is a pediatric cardiologist with extensive research experience in the exercise physiology of children.

Dr. Rowland is author of Developmental Exercise Physiology (1996) and Pediatric Laboratory Exercise Testing: Clinical Guidelines (1993) and editor of Pediatric Exercise Science. He is a former president of the North American Society for Pediatric Exercise Medicine (NASPEM) and a former member of the board of trustees of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). He is a former president of the New England Chapter of the ACSM and received the Honor Award in 1993.

Dr. Rowland received BS and MD degrees from the University of Michigan in 1965 and 1969.
