Essential perspective on note taking

Tony Buzan's book (I read the 2010 BBC Active edition) has been a very actionable book for me. I was feeling at an impasse with committing my plans and thoughts into paper and couldn't place why it took me so long to write so little and why I couldn't remember or get excited for taking notes, even for projects I liked. The book pointed out, correctly in my case, that linear, text-heavy notes don't stimulate a lot of areas in the brain and thus require more repetition to stick. In contrast, less wordy maps that incorporate visual cues (graphics, arrows, font change, colors ...) activate a lot more brain regions and so stick better. As a bonus, adding aesthetics to a map (doodling and embellishing the branches, keywords...) makes it memorable and stimulates further associations, not to mention actually making it fun. And I am no artist by any stretch.

Buzan amply provides up to date reputable research from cognitive psychology to highlight what works for the brain in cognitive tasks such as remembering, keeping flow and analysing. The mind map, he constantly reminds, is supposed to somewhat mirror what the brain is doing when it associates, remembers... Also, the book practices what he preaches and is filled with colors, both in the text and with colorful and picture rich mind maps. His guidelines are well illustrated. The book also gives light in-chapter exercises so that the point is brought home then and there. It is easy to digest with chapters seldom topping 10 pages.

Here and there, Buzan plugs his iMindmap software but the plugs are localized to that chapter for the most part and not very intrusive.

For me chapters 8, on techniques, and 13 on the note taking process as a whole, including how to attack a book in waves and factoring time IN ADVANCE, were gold mines of good ideas. I wish I had this stuff when I was in school. Would have extracted more from those big textbooks. Buzan reminds us that notes are really conversations between us (what we associate with the material) and the author (what he or she associates). Remembering the material is just one goal of note taking, and analysis (which comes from the structure of the map, for instance) and creativity (in adding our associations to the ideas as well as the author's) also play a role while taking notes. It's a perspective I've seldom heard and which makes sense to me. The book is filled with those insights and not just in the abstract; there are examples everywhere.

My first few mind maps were, as expected, uneven and not following all guidelines but with each one and reskimming paragraphs in those two chapters, the maps improved and got better. Revising existing maps allowed me to commit them better to memory and further pin down what the main ideas I'm building around are.

All in all, I highly recommend this book for people stuck in text land and feeling something missing in how they understand the subject matter they are working with.

Updated pop fluff

This book is a pop fluff, NY Times best seller wannabe. Mind Maps are a watered down version of concept mapping.

Do me a favor real quick. Do a google image search for these 2 terms.
1. concept map
2. mind map

When I see the results of searching concept map, and zoom in on any random map, what I see is legible. I can take away some meaning from the map. When I see the results of searching mind map, its like I'm standing 100 feet over a land fill and looking straight down. It all looks like garbage to me. Mess. Now click on a random "mind map", 9 times out of 10 it still looks like garbage. Its not good for collaboration or future reference if I can't read it.

The last thing I would like you to consider is...
J. Novak (the creator of concept mapping) is a Science Education major.
Buzan is a Psychology major.

A psychology major? No wonder the entire book reads like a sales pitch.

The Mind Map book also tells me in almost every chapter that I need to get some special mind mapping paper or pad. The cool thing about concept mapping is that special pads of paper are not required. Thats right, concept mapping can be done on 99cent pads of paper you get at the grocery store. yaay

Beautiful packaged book

I thought this is a great book after I read the review and I did have high hope that I could be more creative after I master this book. I even bought the iMindMap software. I faithfully followed this book to make mind maps whenever I am pondering some thing. There is really nothing much to this subject I guess, I just don't sense any difference of me after using this software over 2 months.

I like the design of this book, it makes my book shelf looks better. I also like the software, it has pretty neat and easy to follow user interface but it really doesn't unlock my creativity or boost my memory. It is good computer game to play and it generates beautiful pictures. May be it is just me.

Rocket man, I think it's going to be a long, long time. When Princeton physicist Gerard K. O'Neill published the first edition of High Frontier back in the mid 1970s (just four years after "Rocket Man," to be exact), he just assumed that some of us would be living in orbit by now. Or as the Space Studies Institute's George Friedman puts it in a new essay for this third edition of O'Neill's pioneering work, the L5 society's slogan "L5 in '95!" certainly wasn't referring to 2095.

In High Frontier, O'Neill had mapped out a straightforward, manifestly doable path to putting humans into space permanently and sustainably, using 1970s materiel and current-day Zubrin-style know-how. But O'Neill died in 1992 seeing humanity no closer to fulfilling his bold vision. Freeman Dyson points out in a new introduction to this edition that in many ways we've actually backslided, that the International Space Station (and the current role of NASA) is "not a step forward on the road to the High Frontier. It's a big step backward, a setback that will take decades to overcome."

But O'Neill's idea of pursuing an inexhaustible energy supply (solar power in space) and endless room to expand remains tantalizingly attractive. The science has only gotten easier, and the moral imperative has only become more pronounced, with the planet's resources ever steadily squeezed and the recent knowledge that a mass-extinction event on Earth is nearly inevitable. (O'Neill calls the High Frontier the only chance to make human life--perhaps all life in the universe--"unkillable.") The High Frontier is as exciting a read as it ever was, and six new chapters provide context for the advances made in the 25 years since O'Neill's original manifesto. But perhaps the best addition to this printing is the chance to see and hear the soft-spoken physicist himself, in more than an hour of MPEG video included on the CD-ROM. --Paul Hughes

Gerard K. O’Neill, PhD, was a faculty member of the physics department at Princeton University. He founded the Space Studies Institute and invented the storange ring technique for colliding particle beams.

Good engineering, bad economics

This was written in the 1970s, and all the numbers and budgets and economic models are based on the published performance of NASA's Space Shuttle - which turned out to be wildly optimistic. Rather than flying 60 times a year for a cost of US$ 20 million per flight, the Shuttle ended up with a maximum flight rate of nine per year (which NASA only managed once, in 1985) and a per-flight cost of between $500 million and $1.5 billion depending on who's doing the math.

Given that huge discrepancy in the initial assumptions, everything following is essentially pure fantasy.

However, this is not to say that it's worthless. The designs of the stations are ingenious and practical (given the availability of funds and in-space infrastructure, which isn't looking like it'll happen very soon). Other technologies described in the book, such as the mass driver and solar power satellites, have become part of the list of tools we expect to use during the conquest of the solar system.

The main problem with the book is that Dr. O'Neill started with the idea of an orbital paradise he would like to live in, then worked backwards from there and attempted to figure out a way to make it happen. His economics and politics strike me as being hopelessly unrealistic.

The engineering is the good stuff here. And if capitalism can fix the economic and political problems, which I believe will happen, then we may someday see people living in space habitats that look a lot like what's described here.

A game changer in space colonization

It was the mid 1970s. The last Apollo flight had been completed few years ago, and the first Space Shuttle orbiter was just beginning assembly in Palmdale. The U.S. space program was, basically, in hibernation.

Then Gerard K. O'Neill came up with an idea for building enormous colonies in space. Insisting on presenting the idea as real science and technology, and not just science fiction, O'Neill spent a lot of time trying to push his concept through the academic process, and finally broke out into the public eye. Enthusiastic supporters, amazing artwork, and detailed science and engineering background did the rest. O'Neill's space colony ideas, entire self-contained worlds constructed in space, caught the public imagination back then.

"The High Frontier" is the consolidation of O'Neill's space colony work into one highly-informative book.

A bonus: the Kindle version is enhanced with far more illustrations than my old hardcover edition.

Written more than three decades ago, this is still well worth the time to read

I first read this book when it was published in 1976. Even after more than three decades, The High Frontier remains a seminal work on man's aspirations to reach beyond the confines of earth. It has and continues to provide a basis for innovative thinking on what is required to not only live in space, but to explore the great beyond. Dr. O'Neills projections for space habitats are elegant, if not entirely realistic with today's technologies. They do, however, provide a target for those technologies. Until we learn to build completely regenerative systems or find engineering compromises, we cannot begin to explore distant planets or other star systems. The time frames are simply too enormous, the distances too great, even at near light speeds should we be able to attain those in the future. The High Frontier for many of us is more than a dream, it is an aspiration, a goal, a problem in search of a solution that inspired a generation of space scientists and technologists. May it continue to be a source of inspiration for generations to come.

While I love this healing modality and have been a facilitator since 2005 , there is a serious lack of published books available about LaHo Chi in general . I bought his book and was dissapointed in it's size and also the lack of lineage and background on the entire healing method. It seems to me when I learned Reiki there was just so much more information available so that I was able to learn above and beyond the initial experiences at all levels. I think maybe this is because all LaHo Chi originates at the LaHo Chi institute .. Please correct me if I am wrong. When trying to find out more from a practioner online .. ( not the author of this book ) I was told there is only one lineage that can be traced back to the original etc .. I lvoe this modality, I would love to learn more from informative books ,Thank you to Linda for writing this book.. I personally need more and I would like to hear more information than the seemingly narrow information out there

How to study religious life: an introduction to Wilfred Smith's distinctive perspective

This is a classic, an early publication by one of the foremost scholars of his generation (1916-2000). It works well as an introductory and supplementary text, bringing to life more historical and textual approaches to religious traditions. It's also a nice introduction to Smith's distinctive perspective on how best to study religious life, which he elaborates with meticulous scholarship in subsequent works.

This is an introduction to the theory and applications of modern geometry. It differs from other books in its field in its emphasis on applications and its discussion of Special Relativity as a major example of a non-Euclidean geometry. Besides Special Relativity, it covers two other important areas of non-Euclidean geometry: spherical geometry (used in navigation and astronomy) and projective geometry (used in art). In addition, it reviews many useful topics from Euclidean geometry, emphasizing transformations, and includes a chapter on conics and planetary orbits. Applications are stressed throughout the book. Every topic is motivated by an application and many additional applications are given in the exercises. The book would be an excellent introduction to higher geometry for those students, especially prospective mathematics teachers, who need to know how geometry is used in addition to its formal theory.

An inspiring inducement to study more geometry

I really enjoyed this book. The first thing I saw in it was the beautiful generalization of the Pythagorean Theorem by Pappas of Alexandria which inspired me to create a dynamic version of that proof in Geometer's Sketchpad. I also enjoyed the planimeter proof which is a very nice application of first year calculus.

This year, as a high school teacher, I have been teaching spherical geometry using this text. It was a lot of fun using the cross product to get dual triangles and the exercises are just right. It was fun to graph dual triangles on the sphere using Maple--a nice project for students. I also like his introduction to map making--the treatment of conformal mappings with its dilation of infinitesimal triangles was intriguing.

Although I am using Courant-Robbins for projective geometry, I like the way Jennings introduces the subject via perspective drawing and he also goes into algebraic curves at the end of that chapter.

I'm not crazy about the section on relativity. It doesn't have Lorentz or Loedel diagrams and doesn't discuss proper time. I like to see the development of the Lorentz equations using hyperbolic trig functions which makes their derivation more natural.

I don't agree with the reviewer who pans this book for being non-rigorous. This book does a fine job of introducing some fascinating geometry and will, if anything, inspire students to study more in-depth treatments of the same material. I think it develops a fine mathematical intuition, whereas too much rigor may very well have the opposite effect.

I give it five stars because it does a good job of addressing the needs of bright high school students and inspiring them. I missed this book when one of my students ran off with it and was glad I could find a replacement copy.

Excellent elementary introduction to modern geometry

I am a Ph.D student in the field of symplectic geometry and topology. This book introduces the foundations of modern geometry in a beautiful and a very clear way,and I am saying this having some experience with geometry and topology books. If you are a skilled high school student or an under graduate student for mathematics or related area,this is a good book to start with in understanding what is modern geometry. The level of the book is about undergraduate level using very elementary notions. The content of the book is: Euclidean geometry and its logical foundations(so one could understand the motivation of the other geometries), Sphirical geometry,conic sections,Projective geometry,and the ending chapter is about the geometrical foundations of special relativity. The approach is not theorem-proof style but rather a more intuitive approch!. This is a recommended book.

This was the assigned textbook for a second-year Geometry course I took during my undergrad. I did exceptionally well in the course, but not because of this textbook. On the contrary, the only time I ever used this textbook was when I had homework assigned out of it or I tried to decipher the book with the aim of supplementing my notes from class - the latter of which it was nearly useless for. Instead of going into detail, I'll list the pros and cons.

Pros:
-For those with little math background who just want to know what "modern geometry" is and is used for, this might be helpful.
-The section of Euclidean and spherical geometries are acceptable (except for some extensive hand-waving in the latter area).
-It's cheap.

Cons:
-The section on isometries is a complete joke. For a textbook that comes back to them time and time again to use them in proofs this is unacceptable.
-The author often goes for an "draw a picture" approach to proofs - usually on more complicated details.
-I was really looking forward to the section on projective geometry...

Conclusion: If you're in pure Math, there's no point buying this textbook. It will just frustrate you and you'll end up learning everything off of Wolfram Mathworld or if you're learning Geometry in a classroom, you'll go see your prof. during his office hours every time he assigns you homework.
