Robert Fortune was a Scottish gardener, botanist, plant hunter - and industrial spy. For centuries, China had been the world's sole tea manufacturer. Britain purchased this fuel for its Empire by trading opium to the Chinese - a poisonous relationship Britain fought two destructive wars to sustain. The East India Company had profited lavishly as the middleman, but now it was sinking, having lost its monopoly to trade tea. Its salvation, it thought, was to establish its own plantations in the Himalayas of British India. There were just two problems: India had no tea plants worth growing, and the company wouldn't have known what to do with them if it had. Hence Robert Fortune's daring trip. The Chinese interior was off-limits and virtually unknown to the West, but that's where the finest tea was grown - the richest oolongs, soochongs and pekoes. And the Emperor aimed to keep it that way.

Required Reading for Tea Lovers

All tea drinkers should read this book, which is the story of Robert Fortune. Don't know him? If you love tea, you should. You have Robert to thank for getting it into your hands. He went deep into China as a spy for the British empire, and sent back the live plants, seeds, and secrets that would introduce tea growing to India (then a part of the empire), reducing the prices and increasing the quality and quantity available to tea drinkers. Sarah's account of Robert Fortune's story is imaginative yet based in facts gleaned from historic documents. The story paints a clear picture of the danger Fortune faced in his service, a quest that paid off not only in access to tea, but in prestige for Fortune as well. The young botanist/naturalist was able to make a name for himself through his explorations. Right now this book is only available on Amazon UK, but I was able to get it for $25 or so shipped, which is about the same as you'd pay for a hardcover book anyway. Worth reading!

Industrial Espionage at the National Level

The whole idea is fun to read and think about. The story is reasonably engaging, and I recommend it for people who are interested in learning some of the effects of governments interfering in the imbalance in national trade; the biggest reason for Fortune's mission to steal tea from China surrounded the Chinese desire to divorce their citizenry from their addiction to Britain-imported opium.

A very entertaining and informative read, if Tea, Horticulture and the Empire Tax are of interest. It's a clear and straightforward read which flows well and is enjoyable, as well as being an engaging history book.

About the Author
Alan Sangster is a chartered accountant (ICAS) with an undergraduate degree in Business Studies, a master's degree in Operational Research, and a PhD in accounting education. He has worked at Glasgow Caledonian University; the University of Strathclyde; Aberdeen University, The Queen's University, Belfast; the Open University; the Robert Gordon University; and Middlesex University. He has published over 50 articles and book chapters and has presented his research at over 100 conferences. He is professor emeritus at Middlesex University, London, and is an international visiting professor at the University of S(c)o Paulo, Brazil and at the University of Minho, Portugal. His research interests lie in accounting systems, accounting education, accounting practice, and accounting history, where his focus is upon accounting and business practice from 1200 to 1900 and, in particular, the life and work of Fra' Luca Pacioli. He has been co-author of Business Accounting and A-Level Accounting since 1994 and will be editor of Accounting Education: an international journal from 2012.

Jonathan Bennett is an author of seven books, a speaker, and an administrator at a drug and alcohol counseling agency. He has appeared on a variety of radio and television shows, and regularly speaks in the central Ohio area. He was a featured panelist on "The Great Love Debate" tour. Along with his brother David, he runs "The Popular Man" And "The Popular Teen" websites, which help hundreds of thousands of visitors each year learn more about social skills, dating, and relationships. He has a passion for health and exercise, and loves going to concerts and running mud races like the Tough Mudder.
David Bennett is a speaker, consultant, and teacher with over ten years of experience. He is the author of "Be Popular Now: How Any Man Can Become Confident, Attractive, And Successful (And Have Fun Doing It)" and six other books on social skills, relationships, and dating. He has been a guest on many radio and television shows, and has appeared as a source in many magazines, including "Girls Life." He and his brother Jonathan run "The Popular Man" and "The Popular Teen" websites, and they work with the largest matchmaking business in the central Ohio area to provide coaching and education for clients. He spends time hanging out with friends and family, exercising, drinking coffee, and participating in extreme races like the Tough Mudder.
