Enjoyed This One

Disclaimer: I read an ARC of this that I traded with Aly!

Okay so I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was a good mix of action and familial relationships and there was no unnecessary romance which was a huge plus for me. BUT I couldn't help but compare it to The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater and because of that it, it was lacking something for me.

I liked Astrid and thought she was really strong and brave for doing what she did to keep her family together, especially her found family. I also really liked Magnolia because she stood by Astrid through thick and thin even when she was having problems of her own. And I liked their friendship: they bounced ideas off of one another, supported one another, and while they both had their own issues, they also helped the other in their time of need. Their relationship is the #1 reason I enjoyed this book. I love books that have positive female friendships and this is definitely one of them.

I also liked the secondary characters and getting to know the management team. They were so much more than just cardboard characters and they all had their own wants and desires. I really liked Rags and thought he played such an important role in Astrid's life.

I did think the introduction was a little bit sloppy and really just a way for Rags and Astrid to meet. But it felt forced and I was not really fond of how he was introduced and brought into Astrid's life. It felt too convenient for me to be really convinced. I also thought the races themselves were a bit lacking. As much as I was on the edge of my seat during them, it felt really repetitive and obvious what was going to happen because of how much book was left. It was like those episodes of Law & Order where they "find" the killer after 20 minutes and you're like "nope there is too much time left" if you know what I mean.

The whole idea of mechanical racing horses was cool though. I liked this and thought it was really well done. I liked that there were different models and how they worked. I thought this was clever and something that kept me really interested in the concept of the novel itself. But the horses themselves were awkward and difficult for me to picture. And the actual race tracks that weren't typical and had the jams were really hard for me to picture as well. I think they were described well enough but I feel like there was a missing piece for me to be really brought into Astrid's perspective and see what she was seeing.

But I didn't get a huge emotional connection to any of the characters or the horse, Padlock. I found myself not really caring if Astrid won or lost because she was a bit of a survivor and would probably have been okay if she had to move. I also thought Astrid's guilt was ... weird and like she placed a lot of weight on her shoulders for no reason. I feel like it would have been one thing if she was the only one there and had left her grandpa with no one but there were three other people at the house with him so I didn't understand her guilt at all.

Overall, this is a good novel. It has a lot of action and horse races and is interesting enough. But if you are looking for horse racing with a twist, I would pick up The Scorpio Races instead.

What I Liked:

I must say, Victoria Scott writes books for me. I don't think I've been disappointed yet, and this is my sixth book I've read by her. There is something very refreshing about her writing style, and I'm pretty sure it accurately reflects her as a person. I adore the voice of Scott's characters, and the tone of all her books - humorous and heartwarming.

Astrid has always been fascinated with the Titans, but she knows that the closest she'll ever get to them is on the other side of the fence of the track, watching. Those who are rich can afford a Titan, as well as the fees to enter the Titan Races. But this year, the fifth year of the races, Astrid is offered the chance to race a first edition prototype of a Titan. Astrid needs the two-million-dollar prize money to help her family keep their home, as well as to help her best friend Magnolia's family. Can Astrid go the distance with the Titan? Or will she risk herself - her life - in the process?

The beginning of the story, before Astrid gets the opportunity with the Titan, was a bit slow. The author does an excellent job of setting the scene, the tone of the story, but I wanted the pace to move a little. When Astrid meets Rags, the older man with the old Titan, the story starts to pick up.

It's not long before Astrid is training on the Titan (nicknamed "Padlock"), and running in the preliminary and qualifying races. She needs to secure a sponsor, and she does, in the form of Lottie, who apparently knows Rags (and Barney, who is friends with Rags). This book goes through race after race, and each race gets more challenging and daunting and risky.

There are so many characters in this book, and I really liked nearly all of them. Astrid is bold and temperamental and stubborn. Magnolia, Astrid's best friend, is creative and fun. Rags, Astrid's manager, is grouchy and stubborn too. Barney, friend of Rags and former engineer of Titans, is good-humored and kind. Lottie, the sponsor, is honest and a paragon of class. Hart Riley II, one of the jockeys and competitors of Astrid, is hilarious and charming and wicked.

I adore Astrid and Magnolia's relationship! They are best friends, and this never wavers throughout the story. Magnolia and her family is just as badly off as Astrid's - Magnolia's father was also laid off, and they are close to losing their home. Yet Magnolia is determined to support Astrid while Astrid is training and racing. And Astrid is determined to win the races not only to get the money to help her own family, but also Magnolia's. This book has such a strong female friendship, which I really liked!

Speaking of relationships - there is little to no romance in this book. At least, not for Astrid. There are other characters that find some romance, but unfortunately, our main character is not one of them. You could take this as a positive aspect or a negative one! It'll appear as both, in my review. I like that Astrid stood on her own, in this story. But I also wouldn't have minded some romance.

I adored Padlock! And the Titans aspect in general. I personally haven't read anything with this concept before (I've seen some people compare this idea to The Scorpio Races? I've not read the book, so I wouldn't know). The author does an excellent job with the world-building, setting the scene, providing sufficient information about the mechanics of the steel horses. Padlock specifically is a wonderful fixture in the story.

I won't say more on the plot because this book is a standalone, and wraps up neatly, as a standalone might. I thought the ending was satisfying, like I said, wraps up neatly. I enjoyed the fast pace of the story, the races, the lovely characters, and the strong female friendship. As well as large secrets and intriguing history!

What I Did Not Like:

I already said this but I was kind of sad that there was no romance centering around Astrid! I mean, I think it's great that a story can stand without having romance; not every female character needs to have a man next to her (or whatever, so on). BUT, I thought for sure that the author was going to go in a certain direction, with Astrid and a secondary character. But she didn't, and I was honestly very disappointed. I think, maybe if this hadn't been insinuated at all, I wouldn't have been bothered by the "no romance" aspect. It's totally okay not to have romance in a book! But not okay if you imply it between two characters and then that doesn't actually happen.

Would I Recommend It:

I personally like all of Scott's books, and I think this one is probably among my favorites of hers, if not my favorite. I love that it is a standalone! No merciless ending or horrible waiting for the next book. The story stands on its own and was worth the read - especially in terms of the female friendship! I loved the amount of girl power in this book. I don't necessarily think this story is a must-read, but it won't disappoint!

Rating:

3.5 stars -> rounded up to 4 stars. I love a story about a girl who overcomes all kind of odds and circumstances in order to walk among those who consider themselves her betters! I also love a story that keeps me guessing until the very end. Lovely work by the author!

About the Author
Born in 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana, KURT VONNEGUT was one of the few grandmasters of modern American letters. Called by the New York Times “the counterculture’s novelist,” his works guided a generation through the miasma of war and greed that was life in the U.S. in second half of the 20th century. After a stints as a soldier, anthropology PhD candidate, technical writer for General Electric, and salesman at a Saab dealership, Vonnegut rose to prominence with the publication ofCat’s Cradle in 1963. Several modern classics, including Slaughterhouse-Five, soon followed. Never quite embraced by the stodgier arbiters of literary taste, Vonnegut was nonetheless beloved by millions of readers throughout the world. “Given who and what I am,” he once said, “it has been presumptuous of me to write so well.” Kurt Vonnegut died in New York in 2007.

A longtime friend of Kurt Vonnegut’s, Dan Wakefield edited and introduced Kurt Vonnegut: Letters. Wakefield is the author of the memoirs New York in the Fifties and Returning: A Spiritual Journey. His novel, Going All the Way was made into a movie starring Ben Affleck. Wakefield also created the NBC prime time series, James at Fifteen. He lives in Indianapolis, Indiana.

“One sort of optional thing you might do is to realize there are six seasons instead of four. The poetry of four seasons is all wrong for this part of the planet, and this may explain why we are so depressed so much of the time. I mean, Spring doesn’t feel like Spring a lot of the time, and November is all wrong for Fall and so on. Here is the truth about the seasons: Spring is May and June! What could be springier than May and June? Summer is July and August. Really hot, right? Autumn is September and October. See the pumpkins? Smell those burning leaves. Next comes the season called “Locking.” That is when Nature shuts everything down. November and December aren’t Winter. They’re Locking. Next comes Winter, January and February. Boy! Are they ever cold! What comes next? Not Spring. Unlocking comes next. What else could April be?

“One more optional piece of advice: If you ever have to give a speech, start with a joke, if you know one. For years I have been looking for the best joke in the world. I think I know what it is. I will tell it to you, but have to help me. You have to say, “No,” when I hold my hand like this. All right? Don’t let me down.

Good for Vonnegut lovers

If you love Vonnegut, of course you’ll love this. A lot of it will seem familiar, but who cares. A lot of it is repeated. Again, who cares? He is smart, witty, cynical, genius. If you don’t have everything by Vonnegut yet, this should not be at the top of your list, but once you've read everything by him and you want more, get it. It’s not Vonnegut at his best, but even when he’s mediocre, he’s better than most.

What Indeed

This was a quick and interesting collection of speeches given by Kurt Vonnegut, mostly to graduating college classes. Though every speech was different, there were definitely a few repeating themes. Well worth a read, and uplifting for the most part. I enjoyed it and I think some of the ideas will stick with me.

Richard Schechner is a pioneer of Performance Studies. A scholar, theatre director, editor, and playwright he is University Professor of Performance Studies at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and Editor of TDR: The Journal of Performance Studies. He is the author of Public Domain (1969), Environmental Theater (1973), The End of Humanism (1982), Performance Theory (2003, Routledge), Between Theater and Anthropology (1985), The Future of Ritual (1993, Routledge), and Over, Under, and Around: Essays on Performance and Culture (2004). His books have been translated into French, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Serbo-Croat, German, Italian, Hungarian, Bulgarian and Polish.  He is the general editor of the Worlds of Performance series published by Routledge and the co-editor of the Enactments series published by Seagull Books.

Sara Brady is Assistant Professor at Bronx Community College of the City University of New York (CUNY). She is author of Performance, Politics and the War on Terror (2012).

Where Theatre Studies Needs to Go

This long awaited book by Richard Schechner breaks the traditional boundaries of how theatre is to be studied. He assures us through numerous examples, comments, quotations, and theories how interrelated theatre is with life and life with theatre. To see performance as a part of life and as an extension of it is to see performance with a clarity that has never before been discussed in such depth.
By the end of the book, which is probably more useful as a reference than even as a textbook that students read chapter by chapter (though it does offer great possibilities for creatively integrating in the classroom as it was intended), one has more questions than answers, and that is a good thing, because the questions become more focused and more relevant and more conducive to individual introspection. As a college professor in Theatre, I find that refreshing and valuable.
This is a seminal work, and should certainly be on every theatre practitioner's bookshelf, if not in their hands.
The book contains nudity and language in the examples of performance he gives, so is not suitable for children.

Great book, poor website

The book had all the basics I'd hoped for and is an easy read! I've jumped right into my reboot with a trip to the store, thanks to the shopping list! The recipes from Day 1 were soooo much better than I thought they'd be. Daily tips and what to expect were very helpful.
The only disappointment were all the great references to Joe's website, only to discover a page with TONS of pop-ups! Wait 15 seconds before clicking on anything, or click on what you want to see really fast, before you end up on another page. I couldn't find the article I wanted to read.
I will probably get the recipe book next.

Only if your are serious about weight loss should you order this book.
For me it is a game changer.
I started JUICING and was amazed how quickly Imoved away from "what ' I'll call a normal diet to one based upon vegatables.
Weight came off -sleep was great, if your ready go for it.

Side not - check the thrift stores - I lucked out and found a Breville for $8.99 @ Goodwill.
My thought is that some folks read up on Juicing - get hept up, go buy a juicer and never get into the mood, there are hundreds of recipes on the Internet. Experiment and find those that suit you.

Good book for starting into juicing

This is a pared down book with different recipes than his Reboot with Joe book, which I also have. It has great info, so a good introduction to juicing as Joe has done it. I suggest it if you just want two options - juice only for 5 days, or juice all day with a dinner (recipes included) for 5 days. Shopping lists are included, recipes for all juices included. Probably a good book to start with if you're not sure you want to dive into the bigger book.

Great quality

I adore Tolkien and own many copies of his books. But this is the copy I keep next to my desk and look at daily. The set is simply gorgeous.

The leather is high quality and thick. It's not just a thin veneer. The gold lettering shimmers in the light, as does the gilded edges of the pages. There's a lovely ribbon book-marker built into each book. They come with two-color maps that unfold so you can follow along with the voyages (or mount the map on the wall). Definitely one of those sets that will get treasured for decades and passed down.

So there are several maps, and several of the books include a full-color painting in the first few pages to highlight the content.

Well recommended for lovers of Tolkien.

Bought the LoTR, Hobbit, and Silmarillion from Easton Press in one set (not easy to find here, BTW). Love the books, love the Easton Press printings. The bindings are good, the covers substantial.

One thing: has anybody translated the runes (futhork), which are the "moon letters' on Thorin's map, on the covers? You will notice, if you do, that the word, "when" is terribly screwed up. On older printings, it's: "I I W E N". On the latest printings (which I own) it's 'corrected to' "H W E N".

BTW; The Easton Press The Atlas of the Middle-earth is the best, most legible copy I've ever owned/used.

BTW: despite my purchase being recent, the rune error is the original, not the "fixed".

Edit added: I purchased all mine directly from Easton Press.

Gorgeous books, too nice to read, should be used to display.

Had issues buying these from the seller. Not the sellers fault though, the package was either lost or stolen.

Ended up purchasing these books from someone on ebay later down the road, and they are an absolutely beautiful set of books. I don't think I could even read them, they're display pieces in my mind. I have my old paperbacks of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit that I'd rather use for hands on reading, These just need to be admired.

Accessible Classic

This translation helps the words of this prolific and devout writer come alive for the reader in very profound ways. The suggestions, arguments, insights, and pronouncements of Thomas a Kempis have very modern and immediate applications. His "dialogs" with Jesus can sing with love, longing, and awe or speak plainly to the very practical. This is an accessible book of meditations that offers inspiration and comfort in a language that brings the 15th century straight into the 21st. It's a book to keep and savor over and over again.

Timeless Reflections

Thomas a Kempis lived in a world torn asunder by the Plague, political upheaval, and deep crisis in the Church-a world perhaps not so different from ours. Thomas chose to leave his embattled world for the monastery and devote his life to God. Escapism? Retreat? Hardly. Thomas shows us with great pain, passion, and eloquence how monastic life is the ultimate battle, that between the spirit and the flesh, with stakes no less than one's eternal salvation. "Imitations" teaches us how to be humble before God and each other, and how to live in a manner pleasing to God. It offers up devotional prayers that help us move toward a real and meaningful relationship with Jesus. And in Book Four, it provides profound reflections on the Eucharist that, for Catholics, take this Sacrament to a whole new level of significance, mystery, and beauty.
In many ways the book is not comforting, for it offers no easy answers. Instead, it challenges us to look at our thoughts and actions with utmost clarity and honesty. This is neither easy nor comfortable, but in the end, our only road to peace. Thomas's writing has certainly stood the test of time. After over five hundred years, his words still ring true, and loudly.

It's still just about the best!

Born in the 14th century, Thomas a Kempis wrote this devotional classic early in the 15th century. He shared his spiritual journey as an Augustinian monk, cherishing his relationship with God and honestly exposing to all his struggles with his own humanity. Most of the chapters are short and take very little time to read. But they are loaded with great wisdom and are helpful for all, whether Catholic or Protestant, in that they deal with the basic issues all must face if one would truly desire to grow spiritually. It's still just about the best devotional manual one can obtain. Keep this one close at hand.

Best series EVER!!!!

Ok I Started reading these series of books one week ago I started with Love in the ATL then went on to Those Carter Boys, finishing up with Hoodlums and Hooligans and let me tell you I read all of these books in one week and they are the best. I could not put them down and was salty when I finished. these books are so entertaining, and this last book was hella funny I laughed out loud had to close my doors and windows because I did not want my neighbors to think I was going crazy in here. They are not the typical urban books TRUST BRUA, had to throw that in; (read the book to understand) you captured life in the ATL, college life, an life in the hood so so amazingly I just love love love these books. You are such a talented writer and I cannot wait until the next book is released, you have a fan for life. Every and anything you write I will buy I don't care if you write about the weather put me down for two copies. I did have 6 favorite authors that I can say I have read everything they have written and still wait with baited breath for everything they are about to write; Cash, Mz Lady P, Nako, Sister Soulja, Brenda Jackson, AC Author and now you, your books are amazing all I can say is BRAVO! B-R-A-V-O!!!

Another amazing episode

All I can say is whoa... So many secrets uncovered and so many more hidden. At first, I was skeptical about the new Carter Hazel I thought she would be over kill, but nope I wanna know more about her too. I can't wait to see where her and Montana's story goes. I am still very in love with my two favorite couples Amari and Shiloh and Andrew and Olivia even though she's still a hoe and I'm scared she's gonna mess this whole thing up for us... Lol. I just want to say I HATE Tia and I really hope Trent or someone else is the father hopefully someone else cause she doesn't even need to be in the Carter family. I hope the direction of Jade and Jaheim works out because I hate Tia and I want her to have no happiness what so ever. As you can see this series all the series are too addict and I can go on forever but I won't. I can't wait until episode six but like stated in another comment take your time. Of course we want the next episode like yesterday but shoot that takes time and all those comments seems stressful. Even though this book didn't feel rushed the comments and expectations on social media made it seem stressful so patiently waiting for the next installment.

2. 5 chapters into this textbook, and I ...

2.5 chapters into this textbook, and I think that it's only slightly easier to read than the newer version. It's cheaper than the fourth edition (go figure), but I ended up getting the international 4E to compliment this. Differences I've found so far are less pictures, and less end of chapter questions (my class assigned homework by question numbers, which did not match). I'll probably keep this for my library after I finish the class since it's so cheap, and also hardcover.

This book was engaging, humorous, clever and revealed a new side of Ms. West not seen on the silver screen. Her wit and intelligence come through on every well-written, carefully crafted page. She is a movie star, performer and all around icon who could easily have made her living as a writer. Totally enjoyed this autobiography and was sad when it ended.
