Not for the layman
By A Customer
This book is serious, it contains tons of charts which I believe to be ephemeris, but I'm no expert. Not for the faint of heart, this book had me feeling more muddle-headed then when I picked it up! Also lots of formulas including, one for converting longitude into right ascension with latitude? Whatever that means. Confusing for the layman.

A sharp-eyed, uniquely humane tour of America's cultural landscape―from high to low to lower than low―by the award-winning young star of the literary nonfiction world.

In Pulphead, John Jeremiah Sullivan takes us on an exhilarating tour of our popular, unpopular, and at times completely forgotten culture. Simultaneously channeling the gonzo energy of Hunter S. Thompson and the wit and insight of Joan Didion, Sullivan shows us―with a laidback, erudite Southern charm that's all his own―how we really (no, really) live now.

In his native Kentucky, Sullivan introduces us to Constantine Rafinesque, a nineteenth-century polymath genius who concocted a dense, fantastical prehistory of the New World. Back in modern times, Sullivan takes us to the Ozarks for a Christian rock festival; to Florida to meet the alumni and straggling refugees of MTV's Real World, who've generated their own self-perpetuating economy of minor celebrity; and all across the South on the trail of the blues. He takes us to Indiana to investigate the formative years of Michael Jackson and Axl Rose and then to the Gulf Coast in the wake of Katrina―and back again as its residents confront the BP oil spill.

Gradually, a unifying narrative emerges, a story about this country that we've never heard told this way. It's like a fun-house hall-of-mirrors tour: Sullivan shows us who we are in ways we've never imagined to be true. Of course we don't know whether to laugh or cry when faced with this reflection―it's our inevitable sob-guffaws that attest to the power of Sullivan's work.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the  Month, November 2011: What a fresh and daring voice. John Jeremiah Sullivan is a dynamic and gutsy writer, a cross between Flannery O'Connor and a decaffeinated Tom Wolfe, with just the right dash of Hunter S. Thompson. In fourteen essays ranging from an Axl Rose profile to an RV trek to a Christian rock festival to the touching story of his brother's near-death electrocution, Sullivan writes funny, beautiful, and very real sentences. The sum of these stories portrays a real America, including the vast land between the coasts. Staying just this side of cynical, Sullivan displays respect for his subjects, no matter how freakish they may seem (see Axl Rose). Put another way: if Tom Waits wrote essays, they might sound like Pulphead. --Neal Thompson

Exclusive Amazon.com Interview:

Though his stories have appeared for a decade in Harper's, GQ, and other magazines, John Jeremiah Sullivan wasn’t a recognizable name until Pulphead started landing on year-end best-books lists, including Time, the New York Times, and Amazon's Best Books of 2011. The New Yorker’s James Wood compares him to Raymond Carver - "with hints of Emerson and Thoreau." Elsewhere, Sullivan has been called the new Tom Wolfe, David Foster Wallace, or Hunter S. Thompson, or some combination of all three.

I prefer to think of him more as the Tom Waits of long-form journalism.

Sullivan’s sportswriter father was an early and lasting influence. "The stuff he wrote was so weird, when I go back and look at it. It would almost have to be classified as creative non-fiction," Sullivan told me.

I asked Sullivan if his father encouraged him to become a writer.

"He did the smartest and best thing he could have done for me, which was to take a very coolly distant but encouraging attitude,” he said. “I think he could tell early on that it's what I was going to do, that I wasn't really suited for much else.

After college and a brief “lost period” in Ireland, Sullivan got an internship at The Oxford American magazine and spent a month in Mississippi, living in a brown-carpeted room at the Ole Miss hotel, with hookers conducting their business nearby.

One night, Sullivan told his editor, Marc Smirnoff, about his musician brother’s near-death electrocution from a microphone. Smirnoff suggested he write a story about it, giving Sullivan his first professional byline.

"It was just one of those things where somebody opens the door and steps aside and says, 'Don't f**k it up'," Sullivan said. "And that piece made a lot of cool things happen for me."

Cool things like bylines in Harper's, The Paris Review, and The New York Times Magazine.

Over the next decade he honed his reporting skills, his unique voice (personal not cynical, thoughtful not intellectual), and a particular interest in outliers. I asked: do you look for oddballs, or do they find you? "It probably betrays a weakness for grotesques," he said. "And grotesques give you little angles of insight into human nature. There are things they can't help exposing.

"Sometimes I take pleasure in writing about people who make it hard for you to see their basic humanity. It gives me a very clear task as a writer to insist on it."

Pulphead is filled with hunks of other people’s sometimes misshapen humanity.

"The things that can happen to people... it just blows your mind."

Four more questions for Sullivan:

  • Where do you work? "I used to be one of those people who could write anywhere but for the first time I've become real attached to this corner office in our house that’s become sort of a cocoon. I keep it real disgusting so nobody will ever want to come in here. My daughter will show it to friends, almost like you'd show somebody the dungeon."
  • Who are you reading? "It’s more about staying in constant contact with writing, always being into some writer. That keeps me inspired and it keeps me feeling like, when I sit down to write, it's part of a preexisting and ongoing conversation. It's not the scary void that people talk about of the white page. I do everything I can to cancel out that feeling."
  • You’re a fan of bourbon – can you write drunk? - "Drinking and smoking for me are useful for getting over humps. For cracking things open. But if I try to do it in a sustained way, it gets kind of sloppy and pudding-headed. So I have to introduce it into the process at the right moments … (Bourbon) gives you a little bit of that what-the-f**k feeling."
  • Do you think of yourself as a southern writer? "I'm not an authentic southerner by anyone's definition, and I don't self-identify as a southern writer … I'm interested in regionalism. The fact that I sort of grew up back and forth between the Midwest and the South, it sensitized me to the differences early on … Mainly I’m interested in the psycho-geography of regionalism, and how it gives shape to people's personalities.”

Review

“Sullivan seems able to do almost anything, to work in any register, and not just within a single piece but often in the span of a single paragraph…Pulphead is the best, and most important, collection of magazine writing since Wallace's A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again…Sullivan's writing is a bizarrely coherent, novel, and generous pastiche of the biblical, the demotic, the regionally gusty and the erudite.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“[Pulphead is] a big and sustaining pile of--as I've heard it put about certain people's fried chicken--crunchy goodness . . . What's impressive about Pulphead is the way these disparate essays cohere into a memoirlike whole. The putty that binds them together is Mr. Sullivan's steady and unhurried voice. Reading him, I felt the way Mr. Sullivan does while listening to a Bunny Wailer song called ‘Let Him Go.' That is, I felt ‘like a puck on an air-hockey table that's been switched on.' Like well-made songs, his essays don't just have strong verses and choruses but bridges, too, unexpected bits that make subtle harmonic connections . . . The book has its grotesques, for sure. But they are genuine and appear here in a way that put me in mind of one of Flannery O'Connor's indelible utterances. ‘Whenever I'm asked why Southern writers particularly have a penchant for writing about freaks,' O'Connor said, 'I say it is because we are still able to recognize one.'” ―The New York Times

“Sullivan's essays have won two National Magazine Awards, and here his omnivorous intellect analyzes Michael Jackson, Christian rock, post-Katrina New Orleans, Axl Rose and the obscure 19th century naturalist Constantine Rafinesque. His compulsive honesty and wildly intelligent prose recall the work of American masters of New Journalism like Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe.” ―Time

“Sullivan's essays stay with you, like good short stories--and like accomplished short fiction, they often will, over time, reveal a fuller meaning . . . Whether he ponders the legacy of a long-dead French scientist or the unlikely cultural trajectory of Christian rock, Sullivan imbues his narrative subjects with a broader urgency reminiscent of other great practitioners of the essay-profile, such as New Yorker writers Joseph Mitchell and A. J. Liebling or Gay Talese during his '60s Esquire heyday . . . [Pulphead] reinforces [Sullivan's] standing as among the best of his generation's essayists.” ―Bookforum

“[The essays in Pulphead are] among the liveliest magazine features written by anyone in the past 10 years . . . What they have in common, though, whether low or high of brow, is their author's essential curiosity about the world, his eye for the perfect detail, and his great good humor in revealing both his subjects' and his own foibles . . . a collection that shows why Sullivan might be the best magazine writer around.” ―NPR

“One ascendant talent who deserves to be widely read and encouraged is John Jeremiah Sullivan . . . Pulphead is one of the most involving collections of essays to appear in many a year.” ―Larry McMurtry, Harper's Magazine

“Each beautifully crafted essay in John Jeremiah Sullivan's collection Pulphead is a self-contained world…Sullivan's masterful essays invite an honest confrontation with reality, especially when considered in light of one another….Pulphead compels its readers to consider each as an equal sum in the bizarre arithmetic of American identity . . . [Sullivan is] as red-hot a writer as they come.” ―BookPage

“The age-old strangeness of American pop culture gets dissected with hilarious and revelatory precision…Sullivan writes an extraordinary prose that's stuffed with off-beat insight gleaned from rapt, appalled observations and suffused with a hang-dog charm. The result is an arresting take on the American imagination.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Beautiful, thoughtful, funny essays
By A reader
For years, I've been reading John Jeremiah Sullivan's essays in GQ, the Paris Review, and other publications with pleasure and admiration. Now his pieces have been collected in one handy paperback, and re-reading them reminds me that he's simply one of the most wonderful writers working today, in any genre. His voice is funny and informed, but also warm and personal and empathetic. He sees his subjects with great compassion; one of the great surprises of his essays is the way that he goes deep below the surface when writing about pop phenomenon (such as Michael Jackson or the cast of The Real World) that the rest of us might be quick to dismiss. Sullivan is also a master of the short-form memoir. His essay "Mr. Lytle" is a heartbreaking portrait of a literary mentor that is also about intergenerational friendship, sexuality, the South, and so many other things. "Pulphead" is a delight.

Virtuoso writer, leveling collection
By Hannah
A writer of such ghastly intelligence, my own brain feels almost palsied by comparison. I would mind, but anyone who can produce such a fierce, incisive wit while managing not to take cheap pot-shots at One Tree Hill deserves those National Magazine Awards. I've used these essays in the classroom, to get friends, to remind myself what how good writing can be.

Genius and Kindness
By Dmitry Portnoy
In "Pulphead" John Jeremiah Sullivan has written the funniest book by Chuck Klosterman, the sunniest book by David Foster Wallace, and the literary follow-up to Bob Dylan's "The Basement Tapes." Does his sounding like other writers mean he has a less than unique voice of his own? Perhaps. But that is a byproduct of what Keats called "negative capability:" being more interested in the the subjects of one's essays than in oneself. There will be plenty of time for self-exploration in what I hope will be many other books. Right now, Sullivan values elegance over quirkiness, clarity over color. And each time he trains his Swarovzski-sniper-(in)sight at his targets, he shoots bullets of pure love, if anything reserving even more understanding and sympathy for the infamous. These essays are a demonstration of how the vinegar of genius when stirred into the milk of human kindness and aged in the dark cave of the soul yields an inexhaustible variety of tastes and textures. Each piece here surprises and one-ups its predecessor. And oh, the erudition. In these pages one reads that Auden said "all art results from humiliation" and also that elephants regularly rape rhinoceroses. Unless Sullivan is making this up. He might be: he is an ingenious, adroit, admitted liar. But even his lies reveal the truth. This book is a nexus where the soiled and tangled roots of American myth meet the unreality of our media culture with the contradictory braided reflectiveness of an Escher engraving. As a Southern epic-comic social critic, Sullivan has not yet scaled the heights of Twain or John Kennedy Toole, but has already far surpassed Tom Wolfe. Hurry up with that novel, but for God's sake, don't kill yourself over it. Even if you never equal this collection, it will be good enough.

He's All Business...

Rick
They don't call me Thick Rick for nothing.
I get paid to screw because I'm the best at it, and nobody is gonna stop me, especially Beth. She's my type, and I've got her crawlin' up the walls for me, but I'm drawing it out until she can't stand it no more. If she wants to write a story about Thick Rick, she's gonna have to work good and hard to get it.

Beth
He has 199 tally marks tattooed on his back. I have no intention of becoming number 200.
I'm only taking this story because I need the money. I don't want anything to do with a pornstar, especially one as greasy and rude as Rick. Ever since he found out I was a virgin, he's been doing everything he can to sleep with me. I want it, but is it worth giving it up to someone like Rick?

What starts as a simple article about the porn industry turns into something much deeper and more complicated. When Beth asks Rick to teach her about sex, he's more than willing to dive right in. Can things between Thick Rick and Beth remain physical?

This 50,000 word novel is a standalone with a guaranteed happily ever after. All characters are over the age of eighteen and are consenting adults.

Bonus! The novella, Star, is included in this book!
Another hot story about a porn star. This one can't keep his hands off his step-sister...

I did not care for this book. The beginning was ok, and the idea was ok. But nothing else really did anything for me. We have Beth who is a 24 year old virgin. She just happens to get the chance of a life time, when shes asked to write a story about the porn industry. And this is where some of my issue begins. Beth who is a "very talented author" doesnt feel she can write said story due to being a virgin. Now add Rick, who is literally a man whore, not just a porn star. He is literally adding tattooed "notches" on his back. As the author points out over and over 199 of them to be exact. I think it would have helped a little is this had not been pointed out over and over. Now Beth decides to try to write the story, and is interviewing Rick. Rick is quick to point out his tattoos, and Beth is insulted and leaves. Then apologizes for being insulted, and over sensitive! Why? They aqree to meet and try again. So this time he pulls her right into the middle of a porn filming.... And she kisses him! After not speaking for a few days due to the embarrassment, Beth then asks "Thick Rick" the porn star to TRAIN and TEACH her! She was described as a really strong intelligent woman yet I did not get that impression at all. I think this quote about sums up the whole book for me... Rick," Her nipples could take more abuse than a supermarket cart." Really? (For the record not specifically a BDSM.)

"Like a virgin, touched for the very first time".. by a porn star :P
By Ida
A male porn star and a virgin reporter = a recipe for disaster.

Bethany is a "struggling" writer. She writes freelance for a paper, while struggling to finish her book. A great writer who has a road block in terms of writing the emotional sex scenes. With a decent paycheck promised, Beth sets out to write about the porn industry though the eyes of a virgin.

Rick, or Thick Rick (yeeeaaahhh lol), is the typical male pornstar. A huge ego that is only superseded by his rather sizable appendage. He maneuvers through life with very little emotion. Beyond adding another notch on his porn belt, so to speak, there is not much appeal to Thick Rick and that's the way he liked it.

Or, so he thought, until he met Bethany. Bethany proposition him to be the one to introduce her to all things sexual. What they got in return, however, was inevitably falling into a relationship neither of them were ready for.

Would Bethany be able to put her prejudice against the porn industry aside to be with the man, and not the porn star persona? Would Thick Rick be able to leave his porn dealings behind?

I received this book as an ARC and thoroughly enjoyed the book. This is not just a wham-bam, thank you Ma'am story line. This is not about a prudish mid twenties young woman who scorned all things intimacy. This is a journey of two people discovering more about themselves. A journey that would be a lot less interesting had they not been who they were.

I discovered Elliot Kane through Davida Lynn. I look forward to reading more books from the both of them.

An Intriguing Storyline
By L. Levine
I didn't know what to expect from a romance with the male character being a porn star. It definitely is a new storyline for me.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the story that the authors have released. Beth is a reporter asked to do a story about the porn industry and do something new with the topic. She is very unsure and out of her element. Beth is a virgin and not even familiar with porn.

Rick starts off as a stereotype. He is the porn star who goes to the bar to pick up women all the time. He doesn't do relationships. He even keeps a record of his conquests using tattoo marks. He loves sex and makes no apologies for his work or his play. Beth intrigues him and their first meeting does not go well.

When they engage in a sexual relationship, the story really gets interesting. Rick instructs her on all aspects of sexual play and does not rush the process. There are some very sexually charged scenes. There is also the question of whether he can have something real as long as he continues to work in the industry in porn.

I really enjoyed the story of these two very different people exploring and learning more about themselves as they become more intimate. It is an intriguing storyline and will definitely keep your interest.

I received a copy in return for a honest review.

Space 1999 Resurrected
By A Customer
This is the first a series of books based on the 1970s series Space 1999. It has a wonderful foreword by Johnny Byrne, the screenwriter who wrote many of the original episodes. That the book is a sequel to one of Byrne's episodes, End Of Eternity, should reassure the fans that the spirit of the series is preserved. Author William Latham perfectly captures the characters and atmosphere of the show.
Coming to the series as self-confessed newbie, not a fan, Latham is not afraid of taking the story and characters in fresh directions. We get new depths and new dimensions to Koenig and Balor, with gripping psychological twists. The exploration of absolute power and immortality is both thoughtful and exciting. The horror themes of the original episode are skilfully developed, much darker than television could ever attempt. Yet this is still emotionally true to the characters.
I recommend this book very highly. If you're not a Space 1999 fan, you discover an absorbing science fiction horror story with solid character development. If you are a fan, you'll see the universe you recognise taken to fascinating new directions.

Space: 1999 Returns!
By Phillip Merkel
The new line of Space 1999 books is something more than what's come before, taking advantage of the stasis Space 1999 has been in for the last 25 years. The opportunity is there to capitalize on all the what if's left dangling in the series, to fill in some blanks and to get people asking some new questions.
The series starts off strong with William Latham's Resurrection, a short tightly plotted thriller that takes advantage of Space 1999's gothic horror legacy. A few things are added here and there to our Moonbase in the Latham work, most obvious is the meaty role given to Victor Bergman who gets to shine throughout the story. A few horrific elements are thrown in and we get to take a walk into the mind of the series most disturbing
character, Balor. The Balor character builds on what was already shown in the original episode, End of Eternity and he once again wrecks havoc in the halls of Moonbase Alpha. Full of style with a couple of surprises, Resurrection was a great read for me and even more for my friends who read through the book never having seen the episode it's based on. Most of all I enjoyed the sense of "place" within the story. The beginning exposition where Latham takes the reader through space finally into Main Mission, describing the events of the Breakaway in clever fashion, "The final revolution" is my favorite part breaking the long silence of 25 years between the series end and this new series of books. Latham was the right writer to do the first book in this new line of Space 1999 original novels.
I'm looking forward to the upcoming books in this series!

feels like 1976
By A Customer
If you are a fan of the 1970s television series Space:1999, then you are in luck. Powys Media is publishing a series of new Space:1999 novels, as well as reprinting the 16 novels published during the show's original two-year run (visit their web site for the latest publishing schedule).
This novel is quite enjoyable and accurately captures the feel of the TV show. If you have never seen Space:1999 before, however, this is not the place for you to begin...people who are not already familiar with the characters and situation are likely to be somewhat confused, William Latham's appealing story notwithstanding. Perhaps newbies should consider viewing the new DVDs first.

I have owned a used set for over 5 years and love reading the messages that were of concern at that time and many which are still of concern today. There are many talks to sort through but a small index is included to search by topic.

A very worthwhile read...
By Jamie
I played and loved Mass Effect 1 so much that I bought Mass Effect 2 for full price on the day it was released. I never pay full price. I absolutely loved Mass Effect 2 also, and never really felt like I was missing anything that happened between the two games. However that is basically where this comic falls in the timeline. Actually the events in this comic take place immediately after the events of the opening cut-scene in ME2, just to be precise.

A few people have argued that the Liara T'Soni of this comic does not really mesh with the Liara T'Soni of ME1. As someone who explored the romantic option with Liara in the first game though, I would have to disagree. Here is someone who fought from one end of the galaxy to the other by the side of Commander Shepard, someone who went through heck and back to defeat an overwhelming enemy, someone who fell in love and then lost that love.

What would you do if you found out that that enemy was trying to steal your loved ones remains for some unknown (probably nefarious) reason)? Would you go to any lengths necessary to prevent that from happening? THAT is the Liara T'Soni that we see in this book. And it fits in perfectly with the Liara that we see in ME2. In fact, if you plan on playing (or already have played) the Lair of the Shadow Broker this is a must read. It will really fill in some of the blanks and prepare you for that story.

Nice collectible for fans of the franchise, but doesn't really add much to the canon
By Ars Legendi
I'm a big fan of Bioware's games, but after being thoroughly underwhelmed by David Gaider's debut novelization of the Dragon Age universe, I've largely gone back to my tried and true philosophy of avoiding game tie-ins. I've heard good things about the Mass Effect novels, though. Though skittish about trying this stuff again, I figured that this graphic novel would be a safe bet. I liked it for what it was (a brief aside for existing fans of the games), but I'm hard pressed to find anything else about it to compliment.

The story follows Dr. Liara T'Soni in the aftermath of the Normandy SR2's destruction at the hands of the Collectors. Desperate to find what has become of Commander Shepard, she journeys to the outpost of Omega and falls in with a shady Drell named Feron, whose allegiance seem to shift on the hour. Caught in the middle of a standoff between the elusive Shadow Broker, the human-supremacist organization Cerberus, and the sinister Collectors, Liara struggles to save Shepard's body from the murky schemes that have risen up around it.

This series of comics promises to tell the story hinted at by Liara in Mass Effect 2, and, well, it does that. That, and not much else. Liara meets Feron, throws around a lot of biotic bodyslams, and plucks Shepard from the clutches of the Collectors. To wit, she did everything she said she did in the few lines of dialogue on the subject from the game. I mean, that's not really a bad thing; I wanted that story, and I got it. I was just hoping there was a little bit more to it than that.

There is definitely some extra material in the suddenly saucy rendition of Liara, however. I feel like I shouldn't complain, since Liara has been my Shepard's nerdy blue girlfriend since the first game. However, Francia's art contorts Liara into a centerfold pose at every... literally, every... opportunity. Apparently, arching your back, thrusting your chest out, tilting your hips backward, spreading your legs, and looking over one shoulder is the natural and comfortable position one would take when recovering from a fall. Or being held by the arm. Or sitting in a chair. Or watching your ship being blown up. Or, you know, whenever. I understand that female characters being drawn for the male gaze is a pervasive issue in comics, and I realize that these panels aren't any more gratuitous than, say, the cornucopia of Miranda butt close-ups in the games. But Liara isn't really supposed to be a sexpot, at least in my interpretation of her character. Combined with the erratic behavior that I guess is meant to indicate her transition to the more streetwise Liara of the second game, this version of the character just didn't feel true.

If you take this one at face value, though, you'll enjoy it. It's not a shining example of the artform, and it's not going to have much appeal for those who aren't already fans. But it's a quick and diverting read, and a nice collectible for those who love the series.

AWESOME
By Alucard
The art doesn't exactly portray Liara well, but it is a good comic book indeed. The art is still pretty good, and as a fan of mass effect, I really liked how it matched the story line between mass effect 1 and 2. Moreover, the dark horse edition has all the volumes, so it was a plus!

Liquids and Liquid Mixtures (Monographs in Chemistry), by J. S. Rowlinson

Liquids and Liquid Mixtures, Third Edition explores the equilibrium properties of liquids and liquid mixtures and relates them to the properties of the constituent molecules using the methods of statistical thermodynamics. Topics covered include the critical state, fluid mixtures at high pressures, and the statistical thermodynamics of fluids and mixtures. This book consists of eight chapters and begins with an overview of the liquid state and the thermodynamic properties of liquids and liquid mixtures, including vapor pressure and heat capacities. The discussion then turns to the thermodynamics of and inequalities at the critical point; measurement of thermodynamic functions in the critical region; experimental values of the critical exponents; and scaling of the free energy. The change of thermodynamic functions with composition is the subject of the next two chapters, followed by an analysis of fluid mixtures at high pressures. The final chapter is devoted to the statistical thermodynamics of fluids and mixtures, paying particular attention to the thermodynamic properties in terms of the forces between the molecules; the balance of intermolecular potentials between like and unlike molecules; and phase behavior. This monograph will be of interest to students and researchers in the fields of chemistry and chemical engineering.

Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart, by James R. Doty MD

Extraordinary things happen when we harness the power of both the brain and the heart

Growing up in the high desert of California, Jim Doty was poor, with an alcoholic father and a mother chronically depressed and paralyzed by a stroke. Today he is the director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford University, of which the Dalai Lama is a founding benefactor. But back then his life was at a dead end until at twelve he wandered into a magic shop looking for a plastic thumb. Instead he met Ruth, a woman who taught him a series of exercises to ease his own suffering and manifest his greatest desires. Her final mandate was that he keep his heart open and teach these techniques to others. She gave him his first glimpse of the unique relationship between the brain and the heart.

Doty would go on to put Ruth’s practices to work with extraordinary results—power and wealth that he could only imagine as a twelve-year-old, riding his orange Sting-Ray bike. But he neglects Ruth’s most important lesson, to keep his heart open, with disastrous results—until he has the opportunity to make a spectacular charitable contribution that will virtually ruin him. Part memoir, part science, part inspiration, and part practical instruction, Into the Magic Shop shows us how we can fundamentally change our lives by first changing our brains and our hearts.

Review
"In this profound and beautiful book, Dr Doty teaches us with his life, and the lessons he imparts are some of the most important of all: that happiness cannot be without suffering, that compassion is born from understanding our own suffering and the suffering of those around us, and that only when we have compassion in our hearts can we be truly happy."-Thich Nhat Hahn, Zen Buddhist monk, global spiritual leader and peace activist

"Once in a generation, someone is able to articulate the compelling mystery within his or her life story in such a way that it captures the imagination of others and inspires them to align with what is deepest and best in themselves and allow it to manifest and flower...Behold what is emerging now." -Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Center for Mindfulness, Health Care and Society and creator of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

"Into the Magic Shop is not only a moving testimony that keeps the reader enthralled throughout the book, but also a powerful exhortation to live a more compassionate and meaningful life. Beautiful and highly inspiring."-Matthieu Ricard, Buddhist monk, humanitarian and author of Altruism: How Compassion can Change Your Life and the World

"An optimistic and engagingly well-told life story that incorporates scientific investigation into its altruistic message."
—Kirkus Reviews

"Into the Magic Shop is pure magic!  That a child from humble beginnings could become a professor of neurosurgery and the founder of a center that studies compassion and altruism at a major university, as well as an entrepreneur and philanthropist is extraordinary enough. But it is Doty's ability to describe his journey so lyrically, and then his willingness to share his methods that make this book a gem."
—Abraham Verghese, MD, Author of Cutting for Stone

"This book tells the remarkable story of a neurosurgeon's quest to unravel the mystery of the link between our brains and our hearts. From the moment in his childhood when a simple act of kindness changed the course of his own life to his founding a center to study compassion at Stanford University. Jim Doty's life illustrates how each of us can make a difference. We can make the world a more compassionate place. I’m sure many readers will be moved by this inspiring story to open their hearts and see what they too can do for others."
—His Holiness the Dalai Lama

“Into the Magic Shop offers a gripping, well-told journey into the mysteries of the human mind and brain. Neurosurgeon James Doty has written a heartwarming tale of courage and compassion."
—Daniel Goleman, Ph.D., author of Emotional Intelligence

"Into the Magic Shop is a captivating journey of discovery. Neurosurgeon Jim Doty's well-told personal story illuminates for us all the power of insight and empathy to transform our lives and enhance our world. Read it and you too may find magic in the mystery and majesty of the mind to bring health and healing to our individual and collective lives.

As James Doty compellingly shows, we simply have to open the door, and let ourselves in.”
—Arianna Huffington, author of Thrive

“A moving memoir on the power of compassion and kindness. Neurosurgeon James Doty shares his inspiring story of growing up with seemingly insurmountable challenges, receiving a gift that changed his life, achieving remarkable success but then losing it all, and discovering that the mind is shaped as much by the heart as the brain.”

"A powerful, eloquent, deeply spiritual and exquisitely beautiful book.  Real magic!"
—Dean Ornish, M.D., author of The Spectrum

—Rick Hanson, Ph.D., author of Hardwiring Happiness

"Dr. Doty’s powerful book, Into the Magic Shop, is a testament to how faith and compassion extend beyond religion, race and nationality and can help an individual overcome adversity and personal limitations.  It is an inspiration."
—Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, spiritual leader and founder of the Art of Living Foundation

The day I noticed my thumb was missing began like any other day the summer before I started eighth grade. I spent my days riding my bicycle around town, even though sometimes it was so hot the metal on my handlebars felt like a stove top. I could always taste the dust in my mouth—gritty and weedy like the rabbit brush and cacti that battled the desert sun and heat to survive. My family had little money, and I was often hungry. I didn’t like being hungry. I didn’t like being poor.

Lancaster’s greatest claim to fame was Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier at nearby Edwards Air Force Base some twenty years earlier. All day long planes would fly overhead, training pilots and testing aircraft. I wondered what it would be like to be Chuck Yeager flying the Bell X-1 at Mach 1, accomplishing what no human had ever done before. How small and desolate Lancaster must have looked to him from forty five thousand feet up going faster than anyone ever thought possible. It seemed small and desolate to me, and my feet were only a foot above the ground as I pedaled around on my bike.

I had noticed my thumb missing that morning. I kept a wooden box under my bed that had all my most prized possessions. A small notebook that held my doodles, some secret poetry, and random crazy facts I had learned—like twenty banks are robbed every day in the world, snails can sleep for three years, and it’s illegal to give a monkey a cigarette in Indiana. The box also held a worn copy of Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, dog-eared on the pages that listed the six ways to get people to like you. I could recite the six things from memory.

1. Become genuinely interested in other people.
2. Smile.
3. Remember that a person’s name is, to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
4. Be a good listener. Encourage others to talk about themselves.
5. Talk in terms of the other person’s interest.
6. Make the other person feel important—and do it sincerely.

I tried to do all of these things when I talked to anyone, but I always smiled with my mouth closed because when I was younger I had fallen and hit my upper lip on our coffee table, knocking out my front baby tooth. Because of that fall my front tooth grew in crooked and was discolored a dark brown. My parents didn’t have the money to get it fixed. I was embarrassed to smile and show my discolored crooked tooth, so I tried to keep my mouth closed at all times.

Besides the book, my wooden box also had all my magic tricks—a pack of marked cards, some gimmicked coins that I could change from nickels into dimes, and my most prized possession: a plastic thumb tip that could hide a silk scarf or a cigarette. That book and my magic tricks were very important to me—gifts from my father. I had spent hours and hours practicing with that thumb tip. Learning how to hold my hands so it wouldn’t be obvious and how to smoothly stuff the scarf or a cigarette inside it so that it would appear to magically disappear. I was able to fool my friends and our neighbors in the apartment complex. But today the thumb was missing.
Gone. Vanished. And I wasn’t too happy about it.

My brother, as usual, wasn’t home, but I figured maybe he had taken it or at least might know where it was. I didn’t know where he went every day, but I decided to get on my bike and go looking for him. That thumb tip was my most prized possession. Without it I was nothing. I needed my thumb back.

Kindness Is His Religion . . . .
By SundayAtDusk
This book is an interesting one that I read in one night. It is both a memoir and a metaphysical book, and is written by a neurosurgeon. The introduction has a graphic description of brain surgery which I stopped reading long before it was over. Chapter One then goes back to Lancaster, California in 1968, where the author is a twelve-year-old who feels like he is most unlucky where his family is concerned. His father is an alcoholic with unsteady employment, his mother is depressed and sometimes suicidal, his older brother is always frightened, and eviction is always a possibility. But then he walks into a magic shop one day, where Ruth, the owner’s mother, decides he would be a good candidate to teach the “magic” of metaphysics.

What she basically teaches him is meditation and visualization. Those are two topics I’ve read much about, since I’ve read hundreds of metaphysical books, but have never been truly enticed to practice. No, I’m not going to add "until now". Although if you are interested in those two things and don’t won’t to get bogged down in "heavy" reading, this book would be an excellent one to read. What you will learn is “relaxing the body”, “taming the mind”, “opening the heart” and “clarifying your intent”. There are step-by-step instructions, of two to three pages, about each of those techniques after they are discussed. There are also audio versions of those instructions at a website mentioned in the book. Thus, this is a bit of a self-help book, too.

Dr. Doty describes how his childhood is tremendously changed after spending six weeks learning Ruth’s lessons. His family life doesn’t really change, he is the one who changes. Sometimes while reading this book, it seems unreal a 12-year-old American boy in 1968 would have the patience and desire to learn those lessons, but I will believe that the good doctor is telling the truth. He then goes on to describe the rest of his life, where he beat all odds to go to college and medical school, and became a very successful and wealthy neurosurgeon. With success came arrogance, however, and there were some disastrous happenings. But once Dr. Doty realized he was listening too much to his brain and not enough to his heart, he balanced out his life and began teaching compassion and altruism. Like the Dalai Lama, he says kindness is his religion. The author has certainly come a long way from his days as an angry, envious child, who was afraid his life would always be defined by his unhappy, poor family and circumstances beyond his control. A good read.

One Doctor's Prescription for a Much Better World.
By Michael
Back in the 1970's, I took a meditation course with a well-known Hindu teacher named Swami Rama, who was one of the first yogis whose significant mental powers were studied by Western scientists. What I learned from him about the tools of relaxation, meditation, focusing on a mantra were very effective in my life. But like so many others, my best intentions were waylaid by daily living, and after a few years I stopped meditating. This was to my detriment since the constant stress of working, raising a family and trying to keep my head above water financially created havoc with my health.

In the meantime, Swami Rama became a controversial character after being accused by several women of being sexually abused and exploited by the "holy man" in his Ashram. This kind of revelation has become almost common place as we've come to understand that great teachers can all-too-often possess a great ability to take advantage of those he or she teaches and who place so much trust and love in that person.

Today, "mindfulness" is almost a buzzword in everything from sports to business as meditation has been studied and proven to be beneficial and rewarding to those who practice it.

As I read through the first few chapters of "Into the Magic Shop", I felt a definite deja vu as Dr. Doty describes the "magic" he was taught by Ruth in the magic shop of his youth. I purchased the book because the blurb about Dr. Doty seemed intriguing, but I soon felt like the book was nothing more than a self-help book disguised as an autobiography, and while I understood that the magic described in the book is indeed powerful, I already knew all about what he was describing as the "magic" and was about to put the book aside; disappointed that the book never felt like it was going anywhere.

I'm very glad that I didn't, however, since once Dr. Doty began to relate the amazing journey he took from Lancaster, California to the pinnacle of financial and professional success, the book became one I couldn't put down. The remarkable arc of his journey becomes a life lesson for so many people hell bent on success at all costs.

Dr. Doty is frank about his failings in relationships and about how the magic he learned got him everything he wanted materially, but let him bankrupt in many other ways. It was only when he began to understand that only through Kindness, Compassion, Empathy and Love does a life truly become fulfilled that he understood how he had misused the magic he'd learned.

In our society, the words above are used often, but they are not taken to heart, which is the organ Dr. Doty believes be the true seat of our greatest human virtues; not the brain.

Dr. Doty's story of how the magic he learned as a child can be used toward good or ill is a vitally important one in a society that values material wealth, fame and irresponsible consumerism as the most desirable. Not one to just talk about Kindness, Compassion, Empathy and Love, he created the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford University. CCARE states as its mission that it "investigates methods for cultivating compassion and promoting altruism within individuals and society through rigorous research, scientific collaborations, and academic conferences. In addition, CCARE provides a compassion cultivation program and teacher training as well as educational public events and programs."

"Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart" is both a fascinating journey of a successful neurosurgeon and entrepreneur as well as a remarkable prescription for creating a much happier and healthier individual so that those same benefits can be shared with the entire human population. It is an ambitious goal, but one that more and more people feel dedicated to achieving; especially in a world where hatred, injustice and intolerance seem to predominate in our media and in our politics.

Discover Real Magic
By John Chancellor
From time to time, I think everyone dreams about finding some magic formula to solve all their problems and create an ideal life. More often than not, those incidents only happen in fictional tales. But in the summer of 1968 when he was only 12, Jim Doty walked into a magic shop and it forever changed his life and the lives of countless other people.

Into The Magic Shop, by Dr. James Doty, is the amazing story of what happened by that chance encounter. Jim was only 12 years old at the time. For some strange reason, Ruth, the mother of the magic shop owner saw some hidden potential in Jim and agreed to mentor him over the summer. What follows is one of the most remarkable and magical stories you will ever read.

The story is so remarkable that about half way through the book, I Googled Dr. Doty to confirm the facts of the book.
Jim came from a terribly dysfunctional family. It would have been exceptional for him to have achieved even a modest level of success. But based on the lessons Ruth taught him, he achieved success most people only dream about.

Ruth taught Jim to meditate. She taught him how to focus, how to clear the mind, and how to set intentions. She tried to teach him to open his heart, but that was a lesson he would only learn much later in life.

Jim’s dream was to become a doctor. He was barely passing undergraduate studies in college. Getting into med school seemed totally out of the question. But because of the “magic” of meditation, focus and setting intentions, he achieved the impossible. He went on to become a neurosurgeon.

One of the goals he set as a child was to become wealthy. He did that and more. But because he had not learned the most important lesson – opening his heart – he lost his fortune and had to start over. But going back to the lessons he had learned as a child, he rebuilt his life and career.
The book is a memoir, one of the most exciting and memorial I have read. The book is a real “page turner”. I found it very difficult to put down. The story starts strong and finishes stronger. You are pulled along as the stories unfold, his life takes on many twists and turns.
Jim did learn the final lesson – opening his heart. He now heads the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education at Stanford. The Dalai Lama is a significant contributor to CCARE.

We often judge people by predetermined criteria. By most objective measures, Jim Doty would have been turned down for medical school. The world would have been shortchanged. By his own admissions, he has made mistakes. But the good he has done and continues to do greatly outweigh any mistakes.

This is an inspiring, hear- warming story. It should help you bring more compassion for others into your own life.

One of the real outstanding books I have read this year.
