The volume is slim but packed with black-and-white and full-color photographs that include the public library Morrison frequented as a child in Lorain, OH, her days at Howard University, and her acceptance of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. But Haskins writes without condescension, and he includes fascinating information in a clear, direct style with short sentences, lots of black-and-white photographs, and personal quotes from Morrison herself about her life and work. He discusses her childhood, her career as an editor (highlighting her encouragement of black women writers), and he gives a very brief outline of each of her books and its critical reception, from The Bluest Eye to Beloved. Of course, the climax comes when she is awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, the first African American to win it. Readers will make readers think about black history, black writers, and, especially black women writers. A good choice for older reluctant readers and for use in adult literacy classes. A Handy Guide

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but I began to appreciate it when I realized what a handy reference tool it was. Bascially, it shows in full color all the WW comic books covers, from No. 1 until the ones out when the book printed. It's fun to see how WW herself has changed through the decades, from mod in the 60's to muscle queen in the 90's. And for comic book collectors, it's a good guide to go by, since knowing what each and every cover looks like is a real help!

A fascinating book to browse through!

Even the most serious Wonder Woman collector will find it a daunting task to collect every single comic book Wonder Woman has appeared in. This little folio allows the average fan to see what comics she's appeared in, how her appearance has changed over the last sixty years, and the occasional silly adventures she underwent (there was a brief period where Wonder Woman was depowered and gave up the uniform, only wearing white clothing in the early 70's). It's a lot of fun to flip through the book and let your imagination take over about what could have possibly happened in each comic book since actual copies of the comic book can be difficult to find (this is true for the much older comics - see your local comic shop for current comics being released on a monthly basis). The folio makes a great, inexpensive gift for kids (especially as a stocking stuffer) and fans alike. I actually got one as a wedding present. There are so many images that you will find yourself looking through it time and time again and never tiring of it!

Fun!

Collectors will enjoy this little book. It shows the Amazing Amazon over the last 50 years. Not every cover is shown, but the collection does a good job of assembing a representative sampling. And the intorduction is warm, personal, and interesting. Since most people will never get to see the comics these covers come from, it offers an easy chance to see Diana in action. A small book, but big fun!

Entertaining

The Phoenician Stones

Book 14 in the Colton Banyon Mystery series

Once in a while I let myself be entertained by sci-fi action novel and no better move than to choose one from the Colton Banyon series. The story is wacky enough to be captivating and yet not too ridiculous to lose interest, well at least most of the time. “A Dubious Race” excels in offering a tad of history along with a thrilling mystery.

Not all the books are equal but this one makes good marks for having kept a steady pace and injecting unpredictable curves throughout. The race to secure the stones is the highlight in this far-fetched story around who may have first discovered America, an adventure filled with action and there is a lot of it. Unfortunately what still bug me after so many novels are the macho and dimwit characterization of Colton and his team of overly sexed women. They are right out of the past century and need to be worked over and brought to date, they are not funny anymore. Having said this, I nevertheless keep reading their escapade. After all, this fantasy works well if you let your imagination travel with the flow, don’t take it too seriously especially with talks of Freud-a-sizing aspects and enjoy it for what it is.

“A Dubious Race” is an entertaining novel and I am looking forward to letting myself be transported into another sci-fi fantasy soon.

I have been given this book for a fair review, as I am a follow of the Dubious series. Colton is back with the team with Phoenician's stones, this time Lisa Lange comes back with a new mystery for Colton. Buried in paper work, Colton reluctantly accepts Professor Lange's request to look into a few stones.

A few history lessons after, Colton and his team finds that these stones not only are part of history, but also key to unlocking one of the greatest mysteries of all time: who are the Phonicians?

The authors have managed to create a race in time between Colton versus thieves in securing the stones, one determined to protect, the other wants to rule the world. Where is Professor Lange's stand in all these?
With the help of the Cherokee ranch owner, the team at Law offices of Dewey & Beatem manages to again save the day, without anyone the wiser. The ending will shock, and you and I will be glad that there is a selfless Colton Banyon on the job, together with his hot and skillful team.

What could have been...

Another adventure mastered. Reading Mr. Kubicki's Dubious series is everything that makes reading fun and makes having to write reviews slightly less painful. I love reading, but when it comes to writing reviews I am less confident; it hardly seems right reviewing the writings of people doing a job I haven't the courage to do. Mr. Kubicki has come to be one of my favorite authors thanks to his Dubious adventures. This adventure falls right in line with the rest of his books. It starts with Colton Banyon and his very eclectic family, then we meet the bad guys and the â adventure is on its way. Despite the recipe I just hinted at, I am never sure of where the story is going to take me out how we are going to get there.A Dubious Race is no no different and at times much more exciting than previous novels. With hidden artifacts in one place and a new energy source in another young man whose is in danger, spies, and military hardware and jets, it is a truly amazing read. I can't wait to read more.

About the Author
Gabriel Morales is a Gang Specialist with extensive experience working with juvenile and adult offenders for over 30 years. He has taught Gang I.D. and Management to thousands of criminal justice workers. He was the Founder and a past Advisor for the Int'l Latino Gang Investigators Association. He also wrote "Varrio Warfare: Violence in the Latino Community", "La Familia: Prison Gangs in America", and many other books. He also has an autobiography entitled "The Life & Times of a Vato Loco" all of which are available at www.gangpreventionservices.org Joe Sparks was a Chicago PD Officer for 33 years, most of that time being spent in the gang unit. Over his career he dealt with a multitude of criminal figures and gang leaders. He testified in multiple gang cases and shares stories in this book that have never been told before. Sparks not only talks about all of the major Folks & People gangs, he describes Organized Crime, Outlaw Bikers, Drug Cartels, and other lessor known Chicago gangs.

Gabe Morales does it again! Joe Sparks gives some good gang cop scoop too! I've read several Chicago gang related books and this one is definitely the best! The book is filled with some good historical info, personal stories, with old gangster and cop pictures. I highly recommend it!

Great text for anesthesia providers or anyone managing airways. Well written, interesting, helpful, practical. Highly recommend it. (I purchased a "used" copy that was crisp and unmarked for a fraction of the new book cost, would suggest looking at those prices too before paying full price). Still, worth the money either way.
